Tripp and Ava

When the big decision moment comes, and you have to decide between saving Tripp or Ava (and supposedly the reverse actually occurs), how in the hell does this make any sense for Joan to put such a decision in Javier's hands?

Think about it for a moment. Her goal is to turn the populace against David by framing him for a murder by showing the mutilated corpse. Let's say most believe her, for the moment, all she has to do is execute David and business as usual, but she introduces David's right hand woman and a complete stranger and then executes one of them in cold blood without even accusing them of anything. I suppose killing Ava can make some lick of sense, but Tripp? Also, the 'ole switcheroo of punish Xavier through executing his choice for whom to keep? What kind of justice is it that "one of these" must die.

If I was standing in that crowd, Joan could never have my support again; including if I was a soldier in that crowd. Joan must know that, so why do any of it?

It seems like the writers just needed to put a controversial choice on the plate for you. Xavier and the rest of the group didn't even have a chance to tell their story. David was just standing on the stool relatively quietly, accepting his fate. I'd be screaming what I found in the warehouse, the raids, etc. The truth will set you free, and all that.

The whole scene just didn't work for me.

What did you guys think of it?

  • Yeah it does not make much sense. Joan is crazy and I'm suprized people in the crowd didn't do anything. Clint was definitely against it, and I'm really pissed David killed him. But I guess she wanted to punish Javier by killing one of his allies. I still blame Eleanor for all of this, she definitely did not help this situation by telling Joan what is Javier planning. Screw her.

Yep the whole thing just doesn't make any damn sense. Was anyone thinking why they're wasting their resources making a stage to hang people lol? I suppose the people of the new frontier are literally the dumbest and most useless people ever from the audience to the guards. Lets all side with the lady pointing guns at kids. It's a good thing for Joan nobody tried to speak up against her, like even anyone from Javier's group would be nice. Then "Quick Javier is getting away! Open fire on our own people to get this guy who doesn't even have a weapon or any way to escape!" Just stupid drama crap for the sake of drama.

Edit: I forgot Javier does have a weapon I think. I don't think I used it though.

  • In reality the choice made little to no sense with its sole purpose to create a dramatic choice. The same could be argued about the Lingard situation as well.

  • There were a fair amount of moments in this episode that came of out nowhere, but this was probably the most “wait, wtf!” moment. It is a complete unnecessary move for her. She gains nothing by doing it and risks losing credibility among her people.

If the writers were after a “save X or Y” kind of choice, it would be more interesting if all of them were being hanged and you had the choice to try reach for one of them in order to avoid the hanging (and the other one you would not have the time). Even visually it would be a more intense and effective.

    Agree with you 100%

The Ava/Tripp choice is what drove me to make that thread about Nate replacing Joan. This bait and switch Could have work, in fact if it was well set up it might've been the highlight of the episode. There just wasn't enough build up to it. Joan is too calculative and manipulative to do something so obviously sadistic in front of the entire community. In order for the scenario to make sense it would've had to have been someone clearly shown to be impulsive, psychopathic and finding enjoyment in screwing with people beforehand, like Nate.

And yes, this is the last time I will talk about Nate.

I just have to tell myself she just wanted to channel her inner dictator before shit hit the fan. Didn't we all wanted to at one point in our life?

Can't explain it otherwise. And the crowd... what's wrong with those dudes? Yes she kept you safe and sound for some time. But right now this woman saw it fit to erect a podium for hanging people publicly, has two other people rounded up for summary execution, forces somebody to choose who will die and threatens to murder two kids of he doesn't comply.

Real leadership material right there. WTF people! Why are you even listening to this, some even cheering this on? Seems like another communty who deserves to be munched on by a herd.

Shot her in the face and will do the same with Clint if I get my hands on him. Banning people right into a herd. That's some interesting kind of mercy you got there, pal.

To be fair, he just wanted to resolve things peacefully, it was Joan that was banking on the herd eventually getting them, and I swear I recall him saying something about having them escorted out of their territory.
