Why does each season have a screw-up character

  • There's a pretty significant chasm-sized difference between actively making bad decisions that get people killed, and being stuck in a shutdown state where you don't even notice what's happening around you due to extreme shock and anxiety. Conflating the two is stupid on numerous levels.

Not to mention she wasn't making them stay and didn't really say anything when Jane starting advocating leaving to die. Luke could've left anytime he wanted to and she would've been fine for a while since she wasn't making any noise on her own.

All of those characters you mentioned "did some stuff". The difference, as mentioned, is that Gabe actively makes things worse, and at least once he has done it with full intent. None of the other characters ever actively intended to divide the group further than they already are like Gabe has, determinant though it may have been.

I guess his point there was more that Gabe's disposition meant he made an effort to help even when he wasn't needed was productive compared to Sarah's learned helplessness keeping her passive unless she felt motivated like doing something. But there are positives and negatives about both, really.

  • They're there to create stress. A fuck up character can be a good way to create stress, specially if you like that character (which isn't very usual but still). You want to hug them and kill them at the same time, but the only one to get me to want to hug them was Ben. Gabe can be cute sometimes (like baby puppy cute), but his shittyness overpowers it.

    This technique is getting old.
