My verdict on A New Frontier (lite spoilers, Let's Play-based)

I wanna get it. I'm not sure if I'll keep following the Telltale game series for it, but that's better than "after this finale, I quit."

Pros:

  • at least one ending determinant character, the only time since Sam from Michonne that this has happened in TWD game series
  • at least one slow moment by the end of the episode
  • confirmation that Clem's story will be developed upon
  • at least one actual puzzle
  • Jesus
  • notable new and old music as well as a licensed credits song, most of which fits into the setting
  • character development, inferred and explicit
  • a happy-but-bittersweet ending
  • a character relationship chart, missing since the Season 1 finale (No Time Left)
  • equal interaction with remaining potential party members minus Eleanor
  • positive mentions and visual depiction of Mariana
  • sympathy, determinant and otherwise, for David over possibly being mentally divergent (obviously, not entirely, but a step up from the series' treatment of prior mentally disabled characters minus Duck)
  • you can choose to turn down an offer from Kate to make babies instead of it being shoehorned onto the player
  • a character memento in at least one route
  • dialogue and actions reflected by choices from previous episodes
  • there are jokes that aren't in poor taste
  • post-credits scene
  • direct mention of Clem's dad

Cons:

  • both Ava and Tripp die in at least one playthrough, as expected
  • unresolved plot thread for AJ and the surviving New Frontier leader
  • dialogue choices still largely don't reflect what you might think will be conveyed
  • implied heavy Latin accent on the senior Garcia sounds fake (but better than Javi's usual "muertos" pronunciation)
  • a lot of dialogue cuts into each other from the character speaking (see: Kate early into the episode)
  • even though QTE prompts try to look more varied, ones with specific 3-button taps all use the same button
  • character model clipping
  • stiff character animations (at least one minor but notable character early in the episode)
  • slurs (bstrd, idi*t)

Debatable:

  • lack of hubs/hub interaction
  • the outfit change, you'll know which one
  • no Clementine flashback (but it looked like there were two scenes where they tried to put one in)
  • runtime (the playthrough was uploaded in 5 parts of ~17 minutes each, load screens included)

Unknown:

  • Conrad's status (the playthrough logged that he was shot in episode 2)
  • gay mention (based on determinant dialogue that wasn't chosen)
  • Javi as determinant
  • controllable Clementine (if there are any parts like that, they'd be determinant)

Comments

  • Oh, and I'd appreciate it if nobody tries to sabotage my post this time, thanks!

  • Conrad is still alive in episode 5 if you saved him in all the other episodes.

  • Javier is determinant?

  • Oh wow, that's awesome! Thanks for the info!

I think it's been missing since The Wolf Among Us finale.

  • *in terms of the Walking Dead, I mean

  • no he's not determinant. Both Gabe and Kate are, but not Javi.

    It's unknown if he is.
