When was David in the army?
David mentions wanting to reenlist in the episode 4 flashback and Javi says something along the lines of "the last time you enlisted you weren't a father" and talks him out of it. So that must have been around 10 years ago. Taking the ZA into account, it would had probably been 15 years. From the way David talks it always seemed like he spent his whole life serving in the army and that it was the overarching part of his life whereas it might have only been a few years. Maybe it was something like... a soldier's mentality always stays you your whole life etc but I've been about confused about the whole timeline of this.

This flashback could have happened a couple of months ago before the outbreak. It is parallel to comics so outbreak started in 2003. Gabe was 9 when outbreak started. Gabe borned in 1994. David must have worked in military in an early age and he got tired of military after so he left the military and married with someone. He probably spend around 15-20 years in military. He is so good at tactical strategies(brief talk in ep5 snipers and shit) thats why i think he must have spend so much time like 15-20 years. David must have started to work in military in late of 70s or early of 80s.

Let's look at some of the dates that are (pretty much, but not 100%) confirmed. The apocalypse starts in July 2003, it's spring of 2007 in A New Frontier and David looks to be in his mid forties. Gabe is 14 in A New Frontier, which means he was born around a year and a half to two years before Clementine/in late 1992 or early 1993. That means the last time David enlisted must have been in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Judging his character, he probably enlisted as soon as he could the first time, which would have been about ten years earlier.
Do you guys remember there was a post going around the TWD forums with all the characters from ANF and their respective heights/ages? AFAIK one of the telltale staff confirmed it as being reasonably accurate.
David was listed as being around 35. He does look to me as being in his mid forties as well but in the post he was listed as 35.
Javi was listed as 25/26 which is reasonable estimate even when looking at him in the game.
Even if we discard the above point, to me it doesn't make sense that there's a 20 year age gap between the brothers. I could see maybe around 10 years, but definitely not 20.
If he is 35 and Gabe is 14, he would have been 21 when he left.
As people have said, he probably enlisted late 80s early 90s meaning theres a high chance he fought in the Gulf War. Usually when you are deployed into a warzone during your service, it matters more to you than it would if you were sat in a base guarding an armory for four years.
