Murray was a cute reoccurring character in CMI but he didn't need to return in EMI and he doesn't need to return in Tales. He's a one-note character (a joke character who is integral to the solution of a puzzle) who doesn't have any legs.
Ho! Ho! See what I did there?
The character doesn't have legs. The character doesn't have "legs". Because, you know, "legs" has two meanings and both apply to Murray. It's a pun. A pun on the word "legs". Murray's a limited character and a skull without a body. It's very funny. Ba-dum tish!
Never let it be said that I ever miss the opportunity to drive a word-pun into the ground.
No disagreements there, just saying the teeth clacking immediately made me think of Morty, and I realised that there is a similarity even in name. Ironic that they were made around the same time too (CoMI 1997, Torment 1999).
I must say I don't remember much of CMI - I remember the game was kind of fun, but to me it didn't quite compare with the original games. Since I don't remember the story, it might have had to do with the cartoonish look, or with the fact that I played it in the blasted German dubbed version.
Anyway, I do remember Murray and thought he was funny, and I don't mind him appearing. So far TTG have done a good job of not introducing past characters gratuitously, so I am sure Murray's appearance in the next episode is going to be done well. But I agree with what has been said - rehashing too many old characters / plot lines / puzzle types would not be a good idea. That's why I'm quite happy that Morgan LeFlay turned out to be a new (and interesting!) character, rather than someone from the past.
I think TTG have learned the lesson that e.g. the thing with Bosco's disguises and Sybil's ever-changing jobs stopped being funny pretty quickly, so I'm sure they're not going to make the mistake of making Murray "part of the crew" or anything like that.
This is the moment in MI3 that made Murray the most awesome secondary character:
Guybrush: If I gave you your arm back, what would you do with it?
Murray: I’d terrorize the South Seas! I’d torture the living! I’d demolish the… er… What I meant to say was, I’d use it to pet kittens.
Guybrush: Nope. You blew it.
Murray: Drat.
Murray may be overrated, but it doesn't mean he's a bad character.
I don't think he quite makes it into my list of top Monkey Island characters, but I still like him. I'm not going to hype about him, but I'm not going to hate him just because he's overrated.
I don't have any concerns about what Telltale might do with him though. If they decide to bring him back, I'm sure it will be for a good or at least entertaining reason.

...ALRIGHT THEN, LYING, HE WAS LYING ON A CHAIR... Must you take the fun out of everything?
Cynical? He's more just refusing to give up on his dream of being an evil skeletal member of an undead army.
I most enjoyed the wordplay between him and Guybrush. MARCH THROUGH THE GATES OF HELL! -- March? -- Ok, ROLL THROUGH THE GATES OF HELL.
