Can we agree on this?

Clem is black. I got into a lot of shit for saying that on the forum about three years ago. People really weren't trying to hear it.

  • Who exactly is her stepparent is a bit inconsistent/unclear, but yes, she is definitely part black.

  • Nah, I mean like 100% black. Both her parents are black.

  • Well, Diana seemed vaguely Asian a bit, but it's possible that she was actually just black as well. Assuming she isn't the stepparent as one of the Season 1 developers apparently said, of course.

  • Stepparent? When did they say that?

Diana is just very lightskinned to me.

Well, during an AMA earlier this year, one of the staff members(J Job or something?) alluded to the idea that Clementine's real dad may still be out there somewhere, implying that Ed is not her real dad. Many people presumed this meant he would show up by the end of ANF, but were clearly wrong.

Meanwhile, though I don't remember where exactly I saw this, someone apparently contacted Sean Ainsworth or some other Season 1 developer to ask about this and apparently he/she said that Diana was supposed to be the step-parent if they recall correctly.

So assuming this was indeed something he/she really did say, it at least confirms that Clementine was always intended to have a step-parent.

Stepparent? When did they say that? Diana is just very lightskinned to me.

  • Job J Stauffer?

Hm. Seems like they planned it, but it didn't do it? I might have to look into that.

I still stand by my point tho.

  • Clem is as black as I am Latinx: it's not apparent, since we don't practice customs and we're both pale, but we're fully, er, that. Yknow?

  • Yeah she's just very lightskinned. It happens.

    Ah, okay.
    Thanks for reminding us!

  • Thanks for finding that.

Well, I was right. Diana is black.

  • That was kinda condescending.

  • Latinx sounds like a Pokemon, dude.

    That's funny I guess...

    It's...not a typo.

But I admit it does sound like a Pokemon

  • I always assumed she was part black... but I also thought that Clem's mom might have been mixed; part Asian.

As much as I loved the Avengers movies, it did irk me that just about the entire team is American/ or white. As a brown person (Indian, to be precise. From South Asia) I would like to have more racial/ethnic diversity in the media.

  • Wait, WHAT?!

It's...not a typo. But I admit it does sound like a Pokemon

  • I'm nonbinary and of Latin descent, so even though it doesn't follow traditional Spanish grammar rules, the Latin LGBT community uses Latinx for nonbinary folks. I do wish that Latinx and Mx. (a legal title in the way of Mr., Ms., Mrs. and Miss) had appropriate pronounciations, though. How am I supposed to say it in Spanish, "Latinje?" :/

  • The official "version" states she's african-american. However, I do think she's kind of mixed, like 75% afroamerican, 25% asian.

  • I'd disagree.

  • This fall under the same debate as the Fiona-Sasha biology one. We most likely will never get an universally accepted answer. And as someone who is black with both family members and friends who don't look like your stereotypical black person, I see where you are coming from. I've defended the Clem-is-black campaign for a while, now. I just let the discussion go. It's back-and-forth and gets old very quickly.

I think the Asian look comes from the designer basing it off his daughter. There's been times video games (and any form of entertainment) has a character as one race/ethnicity and base the look off of someone with a different race/ethnicity. The Asian look is gone now as of, in my opinion, Season 2 but definitely as of A New Frontier. To me if you look at the concept art from Season 1 to ANF, Clementine is no doubt black. I think the game just doesn't give a good feel of that (with Season 2 being my exception as she looks more black then, and I'm not saying that only because she is more tanned then).

Now I know a TTG staff member mentioned about Clem's biological dad not being seen and then late doing damage control. If Ed isn't her biological father, we may have something. If Ed and Diana are both parents biologically, then let's just agree she is minimum 1/2 black and 1/2 unknown (my theory is if mixed, Ed is Afro-Latino and Diana is just light-skinned black). I think TTG haven't given us a definitive answer because Clem's character can cross racial/ethnic borders with her racial ambiguity.

As long as she doesn't die in Season 4, I don't anyone really cares in the grand scheme of it all.
