i exagerated quite a bit,
but the mass of pirates back then realy was scum.
i presume that a minority of them was a lot like
what most of us expect from them.
but these nice pirates sure had a hard time to
deal wih all the 'normal' pirates.
and i doubt they didn't commit horrible
war crimes though only because they had to.
Is "doubt they didn't" a double negative? Either way, can you come down from your poetic speaking and tell us what you mean without wrapping your meaning around metaphors.
PS, Have you ever considered that the "Golden old days" always look golden with time? For example, I think that a lot of the kids cartoons they make these days pale in comparison to the ones I grew up with (Not all of them, but a lot of them). Someone older could have the same opinion of my day's cartoons, and I could be missing out on some good kid cartoons because I'm so dismissive. (And because I'm too old to watch them... ... ...)
In conclusion, (Since you insist on poems) Allow me to leave you with an oldie, but a goodie,
Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay. No matter how much you complain
of us all .. the dairy farmer .. the guy that works in the
office .. or like me the guy that lives a barebone life without
anything but the bare essentials .. not even possessing a bike.
Finbar, I pretty much totally agree with you. I was more than willing to give Telltale a pass on the first chapter being that there were 4 chapters to go to prove me wrong. Well, the 2nd chapter is even worse in the aspects you criticize. It's still worth playing if you have a couple hours.
It feels like Telltale rushed everything about this. The visuals are surprisingly the least of the problems I have with it, when I started out I couldn't stand them, but now they seem okay compared to the issues I have with the puzzle design, humor, story telling and atmosphere.
I stand by the thought that Spinner Cay itself has awesome atmosphere. It's the first Monkey Island location I can remember that I really, really wish I could walk around in real life.
This has been said before (a lot)... but OP, play episode 2. Then come talk about the atmosphere again. I complained about the characters of ep1 too (like Winslow, whom I now love), but when the second was released I had to eat my hat... It's really great! (the game, not the hat...)

Where is the atmosphere in Spinner Cay? I'm really curious.
First off, you need to combine Eline's ring and the fish eggs next to the hot tub/throne. That opens a secret passageway to an underwater cave, where the atmosphere is hidden. Anyone remember what your suppose to do with it?
BTW: Hilarious if you try to combine the atmosphere with the pyrite parrot.
I really liked the first bit on the ship, where you had to get the priate hunter off, it was entertaining
But i hated the way she had this smile on her face for the whole thing, what is it with these models and smiling,
1) She is trying to kill him she should not have a pretty smile on her face an evil smile would be ok
2) she admires him and he is her hero so why is she not a little upset about it
But my god when the ship landed
the first game had an ancient civilisation of Manatee's This island has merFolk, no offense telltale but you have lost me .... i cant see myself playing any more of this bolderdash
My god like, did you not see the way everyone hated when Indy 4 had aliens in it, ALIENS
Merfolk and Ancient Manatee civilisations are so stupid, way worse than unicorn glass blowing pirates..
It beggers belief
I am so dissapointed, how difficult is it to make a monkey island game where the weirdest things that happen are voodoo
I did not buy Dungeons and Dragons, i dont want to see all these mythical beasts in this PIRATE themed game
ARRGH this is so upsetting, the tales of monkey island could have been so good but its come to this
So long and good luck telltale, i dont think ill even bother downloading the rest of them, ill let my brother download them instead.
This whole thread seems like it's gonna be interesting to read when I have the patience... I'll come back later... Think I'll actually play a game now...
I am so dissapointed, how difficult is it to make a monkey island game where the weirdest things that happen are voodoo
So...anachronisms such as vending machines, used ship salesmen, characters plugging Loom...not weird for a pirate adventure. But mermaids? That's just crossing the line!
So...anachronisms such as vending machines, used ship salesmen, characters plugging Loom...not weird for a pirate adventure. But mermaids? That's just crossing the line!
Yes, sure in the next episode there will be a minator with the head of sean connery, whats the point...
I'm sorry; I really, really wish I could follow your logic here. Mermaids are just as much a part of pirate lore as ghost ships (and more so than zombies), so I don't see what the problem is.
As for atmosphere...Chapter Two gave us Spinner Cay itself, with its dank colors and memorably eerie music, as well as a jungle with pirate skeletons. And in the end, the Cay is...well, under siege. Perhaps not all of your complaints from the first post are addressed in Chapter Two, but the majority seem to be, and now you come up with another reason to complain.
Yeah... what I think he means by atmosphere may be the combination of a lot of things.
Lets take sound first of all. The music was great (I had the CD version of SOMI). As far as Tales goes, I can't really complain personally.
But I think probably the biggest thing is the artistic style that has slightly changed. Let's look back at SOMI, Loom, and Sam n Max. How was the art for these games created? It looks to me like it was painted, then put into a computer, or painted on a computer. Curse of Monkey Island as well, but the whole art style changed to a more cartoony thing.
Things also had to be brighter and more contrasty because of the low resolution...
Telltale has kept things colorful and light but we get some more detail, and it's not quite as super contrasty as the originals.
If it's not the art or the music, then I'm sorry you'll have to be happy with MI1-3(maybe). I've heard it said that you can't cross the same river twice...
Merfolk and Ancient Manatee civilisations are so stupid, way worse than unicorn glass blowing pirates..

I still think your idea of what Monkey Island is is WAY OFF but if that's how you feel nobody is going to stop you.
I think you'll find the vast majority of people on these forums are enjoying how Telltale are handling Monkey Island. The Monkey Island series isn't everybody's cup of tea. It obviousally doesn't appeal to you and that's fine; just as long as you respect that a lot of people are happy with it.
It sounds like you really should be looking for more serious themed pirate games anyway.

I wasnt going to post again, but i just had to after this reply
The Monkey Island Series is for me, i bought them for my 286 back in 1990 and 1991, and i get CMI and EMI as soon as they came out, MI1 and MI2 are still some of my favorite games of all time, and i still play them every couple of years
What you should have said is that "Where Monkey Island is going is not for me", and that statement is true
And that statement where i need a more serious pirate game, also not true, i just need a more mature game, where the majority of the humor is from the dialog not slapstick, slapstick can only bring you so far... like for example i would consider this sequence which i just made up better than most of the stuff that is said in the TOMI I have played
Guybrush : Ahhh, i Love the smell of Salty Sea Air in the Morning
Crewman : *whispers* More like Hot Air to me
Guybrush : Crewman! What did you say?
Crewman : Your a windbag sir!!
Guybrush : *turning back to the sea* touche Crewman touche
I may be just a big eejit but id like more characters playing off each other to make funny conversations.

It's perfectly acceptable to not like something but it seems like your complaint with ToMI is that Telltale didn't do it the way you would have done it. The humor in MI has always been silly. If you are trying to take this stuff seriously you are playing the wrong game, period!
All your complains seem so arbitrary. Just because something doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean it's bad. You want ToMI to be more mature, not because it would make the game better but because it's what you would prefer. The game has its own artistic direction and is being made by many of the people responsible for all the original Monkey Island games. I'm sure the people who made them know a thing or two about what they are about and what maturity level they should be aimed at.
Your dialogue is just a pun. How is that any better then slapstick? I think what you are looking for is a greater level of character development. I think you'll find the character development to be gradual over the season, much like they do in actual television series. I find the way they have added potential romantic rivals for both Guybrush and Elaine fascinating and I think they are going to get a lot out of it down the line.
I only said you should look for a more serious pirate game is because in your first post you sounded like you were really jonesing for a pirate game and something that captured the idealistic pirate lifestyle that has captured the imagination of many. But yes, I do agree with you, you are looking for a more mature game. If more people felt the way you do then I think you'd have a legitimate case but as it stands you are one of the few people I've heard that has disliked the game to the point of quitting early. All I can say is ToMI is what it is, take it or leave it.

The Merfolk and the ancient civilisation in the first game are supposed to be the same civilization - the Vacaylians, which is why their stick thing works on the turtle chest.
I think the continuity between the first and second episodes is very good, and I liked them both.

Right, there has NEVER EVER been ANY slapstick when Ron Glibert made monkey island games. Guybrush has NEVER EVER done a juvenile gag like being shot out of a cannon. He's always been very witty through out his adventures. Good thing Graphic Adventure Games don't use the Graphics to make slapstick joke which, come ON people, are not for mature audiences like us.
Telltale, in future episodes, please remove ALL slapstick/action of any kind and only give us the finest wit humor professor shut up in literature society colleges can come up with.
By the way, your dialogue was so much funnier then Guybrush's unique evil hand that kept slap-sticking him in various ways. Telltale, you could learn from this guy.
[/sacasm]
I just wanted to have a little fun. I am not trying to be mean, just have a little fun with my disagreement.
Seriously, you are completely entitled to your own likes/dislikes. (I wouldn't want anyone to force me to like celery) However,
1. That doesn't mean everyone will like what you have to say. (especially on a forum like this
2. What do you hope to achieve by complaining? Honestly, I'm just curious.
Wait until you guys get a load of the mature wit we have in the next episode of Monkey Island! For example:
Monet, Kierkegaard, and Dostoyevsky walk into a bar. Monet looks around for a few seconds, and then hastily departs. Kierkegaard runs after him and says "Monet, what is the matter?!" to which Monet replies "That place gave me a bad IMPRESSION."
