In my opinion I feel as if the names are very unique. If all of the characters were given a common name from today then we would easily forget their name and their character. Giving the characters a unique name makes them unique and special...... If that makes sense.
I live in the southern US and most of these names, bar the obvious Clementine, Arvo, and Oberson, are extremely common. I went to school with a boy named Clem (that was his full name??) too.
Characters like Katjaa, Arvo, Vitali, and Buricko who aren't from the US are obviously not going to have normal, run of the mill American names...
We literally like 5 characters named some variant of Walter... I don't see how they're out of the ordinary.
