Woah, slow down there buddy! Thought you were gonna fly off the rails at one point.
I must admit that while I wasn't ignorant to the idea, I didn't put that much thought into the idea that Kate actually enjoyed the apocalypse in a very minute way. Though that could also be her concern for Gabe, Marianna, and later Clementine's psyche.
I don't really agree with the idea that she ended up triggering the fight at the end purely out of spite. It seems pretty obvious that she was mainly just not thinking about the repercussions of finally telling him off the way she did.
Plus, having stayed silent during the question pop when I attempted to complete the game a few days ago, she does angrily clarify that there's nothing between her and Javier when David first questions her comment. Not that it did any good with the envious sore loser, but whaddyagonnado?
I hesitate to say they completely forgot her personality, but I definitely agree that they prioritized playing up the so-called love triangle and rendering her the designated contrarian to David over actually exploring her character and background.

I didn't say she caused the feud out of spite. I said she (either tells Javier or kisses him) out of spite. There's just no other reason at that point to declare your love in front of your husband or lack thereof other than spite. Yeah, I do wish they had explored her character more rather than just use her as the woman in the love triangle.

Yeah but you made it sound like she meant to start the fight out of spite. I simply meant she was pissed at either David or them both and she either kisses Javi out of spite for David or Tells Javi she loved him out of spite for both him and David.

I never got the impression that Kate liked the apocalypse. David was the one who seemed as though he liked the apocalypse. Before the outbreak all he wanted was to go back to war. He straight up says to Javi in episode 5 that he is a soldier and that this is the world that makes sense to him, the one he belongs in.
Back to Kate: Kate obviously didn't miss David much but their marriage was falling apart and their relationship was beginning to become verbally abusive. I'm not condoning how she was flirting with Javier before the apocalypse because that was wrong of her; but I can understand that after spending four years on the road she did grow feelings for Javi. She preferred to be on the road away from other survivors because it had worked for them for four years and when they did come across other survivors it resulted in Mariana's death. Especially in the first two episodes Kate was morevpessimistic and realistic when she was describing what was going on as opposed to being opptomistic. She never seemed to like the apocalypse at all. In episode 3 and 4 she wanted to get out of Richmond away from the people who killed Mariana she also had lost all trust she may have previously had for David. Kate wanted to get out of Richmond without hurting the innocent bystanders. After she crashed into the wall there was a chain of motions that caused many of the bystanders to die. Kate took responsibility for this and decided that she needed to help them. It's David who I think had drastic changes that didn't make much sense in episode 5. He went from feeling the need to liberate New Richmond from Joan to, "Well let's just leave everybody in the settlement I have spent years protecting to die. Who cares about them anyways?"
Now that Veee has mentioned it, why are people seem insistent about this notion that Kate was outright flirting with Javier before things went to shit?

Kate also determinately mentions that some of the only times he was consistently happy was when he was talking being involved in battles during the pro-David ending of Episode 3.
Episode 4's flashback goes further with this by having him admit that he feels being back in the army again would be the best for his family.

Very true. It in part made classifying which one/two of the Four/Five Philosophies she seems to operate by pretty hard.

I think the idea is that Ava's death made him super overprotective of his family being in any more danger or something to the affect. The problem is that they do a pretty terrible job connecting the dots if this is indeed what they were going for.

I suppose that does make sense to an extent. But yeah, if that was supposed to be the case they really did not do a job at making that appear to be the case. Good point nevertheless.
I agree with most of this.

Now that Veee has mentioned it, why are people seem insistent about this notion that Kate was outright flirting with Javier before things went to shit?
Pretty sure she was humoring his comment about taking her on a trip with him one day. And even then, she immediately pointed out that she was just joking since, even if really wanted to do something like that, she wouldn't be able to go because her obligations to Gabe, Mariana, and David. Hence part of her reaction if Javier thought it was a good idea to claim she said she was gonna up and leave David.
It was four years after things went to shit, she got shot trying to save Mariana['s corpse], and she was getting delirious from minute internal bleeding that it came up again, with her specifying the Northern Lights.
Her concern about staying with the family sounded a lot less genuine that anything else in the conversation, honestly. That was a last minute response right before David walked in after having an entire desperate housewife conversation about how she wasn't ready to get married or saddled down with someone else's kids now that she's actually living it. The whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way and continued my already poor start with her.

Actually, it was the last thing she said before ended up breaking his CEO's mug, which is what signaled David to eventually come see what that noise was.
But yes, she was clearly having doubts about whether getting married to David-a man who already had a kid, no less--was a good idea.

There was something that irked me right before they both knew David was about to walk in, was that when she doubles down and tries to keep holding Javiers hand?
I get the doubts, but that seems like something a person might want to address before you get married to someone and move in with their kids and all, instead of looking to his little brother as a possible escape lol. It was just red flag after red flag going up for me as that scene progressed.

Yeah, admittedly, that...,well, confuses me. From a storytelling standpoint, I know it was basically the spark of the so-called love triangle in the long term, but I'm honestly not sure what it's supposed to mean in that exact moment.
Like other people, I initially assumed she was keeping Javier's hand in hers because she probably knew David would be too blockheaded to notice(as I honestly didn't notice the "David is suspicious" message given his seeming lack of facial reaction), but having seen that scene again not too long ago, I'm not sure what her actual intent was. The fact that she cheekily rolls her eyes at Javier's nervousness about David but then looks unpleasantly surprised along with Javier when David actually shows up in the doorway doesn't help.
Though I suppose you could just pass it off as her just being too focused on enjoying the concern Javi was showing her in the moment and she was unknowingly starting to develop feelings for him then to really think about it.

Definitely, David's change made no sense, but Kate admitted she liked it when it was just her Javi and the kids. She seemed to just want it to stay that way. When I said the outbreak was the best thing that ever happened to her, I meant it allowed her to get away from David without going through the divorce, and she still got to be a step mom with a person she loved.

I agree with everything you said except your last point about David having an unrealistic change in character. The man had given a lot to the community and they were all willing to watch him be executed for something he didnt do. Ava was literally the only New Frontier member who knew David better than that and was willing to risk her life to save him. It's perfectly understandable that David wouldn't give a flying fuck about the community at that point because if it weren't for Javi he would have been dead at their hands.

To be fair, there were clearly members of the audience who were visibly and vocally taking issue with the whole thing, especially once Joan announces her intent to execute.

Yeah but just like with the Governor they weren't willing to do anything to help. That whole scene though I think was a little to fast to soon. Like the community is just gonna let you kill one of their leaders after you claim a couple of things with not much evidence to back you up? That whole execution scene seemed rushed to me.

No lie, ep 3 sets up a good character twist just for them to reuse the Governor's traits (mixing lies and truths to sway the crowd their side). Actually, I think a major problem is that Telltale seemingly writes these episodes after releasing past ones so they kind of have to finish them at certain times.
Maybe but before they went to try and save the town David was talking about how he has a vision for the place. Then he suddenly wants to abandon it? It just didn't really make much sense to me.
