What if AJ wasn't the one missing
Recently, I've been thinking about what if Clementine hadn't lost AJ to The New Frontier but instead someone else she had been with had gotten taken by TNF (depending on your Season 2 ending). Either Kenny, Jane, Edith (I don't know who for the alone ending). If this happened, then we wouldn't of have gotten the shitty Episode 1 flashbacks of Kenny/Jane/Wellington and they would actually be relevant to the story instead of being killed off in a stupid way.

I still have plenty of motivation to find AJ due to Kenny because he loved that kid and I promised him i would take good care of him.
Yeah, I remember that being something a number of people suggested doing with them.
Personally, I always saw Kenny and eventually Jane dying/being killed anyway.
You don't have to tell me how much more effective that would've been on having us care and relate to Clem's struggles in ANF. You chose to stay with whoever you ended up with in S2. It's implied your Clem cares, at least to a point, about that person (and by extension you, the player).
AJ was just literally shoved onto Clem's arms when Telltale decided killing everyone was a good idea. On top of that, they skipped two whole years of development between these two. What did I end up with? A great feeling of disconnection between me, the player, and the most important character of the franchise. That, and bunch of scenes which I believe were trying to be dramatic, but ended up feeling like nothing but hilariously ineffective.
Here's a question: If this had happened, who would've been held captive for the alone ending?
Probably would have given me a bigger reason to care about S4 and Clem's quest to be honest.
I really have no attachment to AJ, I think I would care a lot more if the person I was looking for was Kenny like what my Season 2 ending was. Or if you were with Jane, Im sure people would be more into finding Jane than Aj. For Wellington and alone I guess youd want to be searching for Aj, but atleast that is the situation you made for yourself.
