Romance in The Final Season

  • Admittedly I don't feel as strongly about the topic as most people that do, but Clem is a teenager now and romance/sexuality is something that she should be dealing with at her age. I wanted to try to make a thread on the subject that wouldn't be closed down since it's not a completely pointless discussion. I don't have a problem with your post though.

It's not a priority exclusive to high schoolers (though of course Clem won't be head over heels like one.) Obviously it will not be as a high of a priority as surviving but it's a topic she will have to deal with (even if she wants to reject love to focus on more important things) when she meets a guy her age. Clem is going to have to make a choice as to if she wants to pursue romance at some point, so I think there's some value in a discussion like this.

As for people's obsession with a romance for Clem, I think some fans just want Clem to be happy after all the tragedy she's been through. I'm not really all that concerned about her finding someone tbh, I just wanted to try to make a thread that could stay up for those that were. If you disagree with those people I don't mind if you make a post detailing why (as long as it doesn't derail the thread too much.) This is pretty much a feedback thread anyways.

  • Okay well these Kenny/Jane discussions have been absolutely riveting but I think it'd be great to go back to some threads that won't cause us to rip out each other's throats (but considering the topic here that'll probably happen anyways )

For those who are completely against the idea of a potential romantic subplot in The Final Season, how much of that repulsion can be attributed to the mishandling of Gabentine? Do you think you'd be more in favor of the idea if you were confident in Telltale's ability to pull it off, or do you just believe it to be unnecessary altogether?

Uh, I'd say a fair bit of it, personally. In the past, I was just kind of indifferent at best and openly stated that I didn't really care as long as it was a decent enough thing on the edgie side.

The main issue with the Gabentine fluff was that it was present as a set of satirical jokes making fun of the very uninspired (and/or cliche?) concept(whether regarding fandoms or some legit products i don't know about), only for the team behind Thicker than Water to just throw it in as a [normally negligible] "potential" thing. After so many people took said jokes so seriously and incessantly made their distaste on the idea known on a constant basis for longer than necessary.
And personally, those things were important but somewhat tertiary to the fact that it didn't fit either of their characterizations for the most part. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it just debatebly ended up cheapening both of them for the sake of making [a somewhat futile attempt at having] the audience go "Ooooooh!," like a goddamn sitcom. And almost as bad is that it really didn't/wouldn't add much of anything to the story regardless, making it's inclusion that much more unnecessary and imo frustrating. Also, it was pragmatically speaking most likely a cover for the fact that Clementine had jackshit to do with the main plot at that point.
But really, let's go beyond all that and just say that the very notion of the two maybe getting together is pointless on arrival from an in-universe and status quo standpoint, given that we all knew the game was gonna end with the Garcias accomplishing whatever their story arcs would amount to and Clementine&AJ riding off into the sunset, off to another journey in another Season/installment.
...Dang, I really didn't mean to go on that long.

  • There was a way they could've made it work, but Telltale didn't give us much specific detail of what drew them together. Almost any development between them seemed to happen off screen, so their relationship progressed without allowing us to see the connecting dots. Were they drawn together because they're just a Boy and a Girl? That's all the connection Telltale gave us time to think about, but it doesn't quite feel like it should be the whole thing. Could it also be because of Gabe's compassion towards others melting Clem's frozen heart? Again, Telltale gave us clues about these characters to presume that it could be the case, but it wasn't shown on-screen to point it out to be truth. This guessing-game behavior is what made us lose our personal involvement in their relationship. Along with others...

And hell, there was practically no time for even that angle to get any traction. And that's coming from me.

Uh, I don't know if any of that really counts as clues so much as just saying "hey, I believe these two like-like each other" and calling it a day.
Hell, really almost any of Gabe's later behavior towards her doesn't exclusively apply to a romantic angle. That's part of the problem.

In your opinion, how high of a priority is it for Clem to find a significant other before her story concludes?

  • Honestly, the biggest problem with Gabentine is that there's no way Clem would let herself fall for someone who puts other people in danger without said person even trying to listen.

Did Gabe ever really do that though? Nevermind on the rare occasion she was around.

Also, Kenny, Duck, Ben, and determinately Kenny, Nick, and Jane say hi.

  • Ok, let me see if I can answer all this, without sounding as direct as I usually am.

Would you agree that romantic subplots could potentially enhance the narrative of The Final Season? Explain?

They can be there, just as long as they stay as subplots, and nothing else.

If you're in favor of Clem finding a new possible love interest in TFS what personality do you feel would make the ideal partner for her?

Someone with a personality like Lee's, I suppose, and as long as they have good chemistry between one another. That's the number one thing.

How can the creative team learn from the faults in how they handled romantic subplots in A New Frontier to create more favorable ones in The Final Season?

Pace it out. Don't force it on the player, and if you reject a character's advances, don't have them keep trying.

How would you feel about Gabentine being acknowledged in The Final Season?

Should the option to make Clem Bi as an alternative be a must in the game if there's going to be heterosexual romance options, just to be fair to all players?

I don't have a problem with that. But again, it needs to be played out right.
