About choosing Shawn or Duck... (spoilers)

Hey everybody. I'm on my second playthrough, and Kenny didn't help me find Clementine on the first run near the end, so I wanna fix that this time... Yet I chose to save Shawn at Hershel's farm thinking that this wouldn't make much a difference since Duck gets to live anyway. But now i'm on chapter 2 and Kenny made a mention about me not caring about his son's life earlier. So will this affect his final choice even if I side with him all along the game or do I still have a chance? Thanks and sorry for my english.

  • You definitely have to save Duck over Shawn and protect him from Larry in Episode 1. Both matter so much.

  • I think it's safe to say that saving Duck is the objectively better choice all around. Even if you don't like Kenny you still earn points towards securing another helping hand in finding Clementine. Whether Hershel hates you or not is of absolutely no consequence and Shawn dies immediately whether you go for him or not. Then there's whether or not you value a child's life over a grown man, but I guess you could say that's debatable when it comes to a zombie apocalypse scenario.

  • I feel like the writers intended you to save Shawn though

  • As long as you support Kenny most of the time, it shouldn't matter much.
That choice didn't have that many points for it anyway.

  • You're absolutely right in that Shawn dies regardless of what choice you make and since Hershel runs you all out regardless and you never see him again, thus making his opinion completely irrelevant so talking end game efficiency, saving Duck is the better choice, I suppose, though tbh I don't really think it matters if Kenny helps you look or not. You still find her and the season still ends the same way regardless. Anyway, I digress. If the game wasn't scripted to go the way it goes I'd definitely save Shawn over Duck. Shawn's an able bodied, intelligent young man who is knows how to farm and is at least handy with basic tools and construction and likely knows how to operate heavy equipment as well. He's far more valuable than a literally stupid kid that is more of a liability than anything.

  • I feel like they try to incentivize you to save him because if they didn't most people's natural reaction is to save the kid first. Make Shawn likable and useful etc etc and give people a reason to hesitate and possibly even pick him over the kid.

  • This is why I fucking hate that they kill Shawn no matter what, makes the choice so irellevant, we never see them again, why couldnt he just live? So dumb

  • Well he dies in the comics, already zombified in fact because he had died before Rick’s group got to the farm. Shawn was then put in the barn so i guess they thought they should show his original death in the game because we don’t see it in the comics

Shawn was unfortunately doomed by canon. The game is canon to the comic universe, and in the comic, Shawn dies and is put in Hershel's barn. His appearance in the game is pretty much an origin story for him; how he died, and the reason why Hershel started putting zombies in the barn.

At the end of the day, the choice is really about Kenny; it sets the table for the kind of relationship you'll have with the guy going forward. Either it's the beginning of a friendship, or the start of an on-and-off rivalry.
