What do you think the time limit for survival is for chopping off a limb?

We know Reggie and Herschel's was done right away and Lee's wasn't successful. Let's say Lee's chop was about 20 minutes after he was bitten. Does anyone have a theory?

  • Does this work in the video game too ?

  • Yes, it worked for Reggie and Pete's cousin in Ainsworth or something like that.

    I wonder if that was a reference/allusion.

  • Hmm, well it spreads through your bloodstream right? So I guess you need to cut of the limb before the infection reaches the heart? I dunno, I'm not a doctor.

  • It's like a snake bite. Shop it off before it spreads same goes to the bite it's poisons the body and kills it then they reanimate to a walker.(although snake bites can be cured without shopping it off you get the point)

  • But how long will that take?

Well I don't know for sure but it is better to do it immediately.Lee waited a lot before the choice came up to shop it he started to faint so he was late.

  • a snake bite can kill within 10 minutes but that depends on how much venom is injected. So if you get bitten by a walker you probably only got like 10-15 minutes before you're fucked.

  • Interesting, Carver. I like your analogy of a snake bite. Would a walker bite be much worse or just worse than most bites? What's worse a walker or black mamba bite?

  • Although the mortality rate of black mamba bite-victims is around 100% without treatment, I would still say a walker bite is more dangerous (cuz there's no anti-venom lol). Without an anti-venom, black mamba bite-victims usually die within 7-15 hours.

  • They would both be equally dangerous in a zombie apocalypse though

  • All I know is you have to be quick. The longest that I've seen was in the tv series when Hershel got bit was I think a minute. I'm not sure though, and the hardest part about maintaining a chopped limb is making sure not to lose too much blood so that's another thing.

Reference to Sean Ainsworth, a cinematic designer at Telltale, I believe?

  • It's pretty sticky. You have to have the tools and stop the blood and possible infection all while trying to stay ahead of the walkers.

  • maybe he survived ;)

  • The real question here is what if someone turned immediately and then he bites someone alive but the walkers teeth are still clean will it won't matter and the man who was bitten by it die nonetheless? I always thought the walker bites were deadly because of the virus in their teeth but what if the man's teeth were fucking white af before he dies....any thoughts?

  • Good question. I think he dies anyway. The bite is not about the teeth, but the virus in your system. So I think when you're bitten, no matter how soon someone becomes a walker, you get the virus and that's what kills you.

  • Lee's amputation may have actually worked. According to the wiki he died of blood loss as result so we'll never know if he actually managed to cut the infection out

  • Blood loss?! It actually said that? That makes no sense to me.

If I understand how the infection works correctly, the only reason Lee had a chance to walk through the zombie herd and make it out alive was because his stage of infection was so advanced that many of the zombies ignored him as a result. It is possible that he died of blood loss though.

  • I think its if the saliva of the Walker makes contact with broken skin, you'll get the infection. I'm pretty sure that was mentioned in the comics or something.

So if a walkers teeth just graze upon your skin enough to break it, you're fucked.
