Would it change your opinion of either Jane or Kenny if...

...Jane was in season 1 and was in the core group from the beginning?

  • It'd be kind of interesting to see at least, since Jane would more than likely still have her sister with her, and with Kenny still having his family (that is, if we're talking right in the beginning of the season), I think it'd be kind of cool to see if the two of them would still butt heads as much as they ended up doing. Kenny was definitely a different guy back then, so it could be safe to say that Jane was, too.

Not entirely sure how that would impact the whole Kenny-Lilly situation, though, and I'd really love to see what would happen if we (as Lee) got to interact with Jane way back when.

Realistically though, I think my opinion of Jane would still stand. I don't always agree with everything she does, but I can understand the motives and reasoning behind her decisions. She was a very complex character and (in my opinion) still had plenty of mileage left for further development, which makes it even worse when I think back on it; wondering about different storylines they could've taken with Jane.

That's part of the reason that Kenny was so interesting - we've seen him go through an entire arc, taking us through the worst periods of his life and being able to determinately help him out along the way. It's a lot easier to connect and really feel for a character when you've been with him over the course of two whole seasons.

  • You mean if she was just Lilly or Christa or even Molly? Maybe, maybe not.

  • Interesting post. There was a similar thread where someone asked if the season 2 ending choice would be harder to decide if it was between Lilly and Kenny instead. The history between Lilly and Kenny would have made Season 2 much better if Lilly had appeared.

In regards to the OP, my opinion of Jane may have been different on whether i liked her throughout S1 and S2 depending on the type of person she was back then but i would have still hated her or anyone that did what she did in that final scene. If Lee or Kenny for example had done what she had with AJ, my opinion of them would definitely change for the worse.

  • If Jane was in the first season? Interesting concept. Jane a part of the motel group from the beginning. If that was so, I feel I would go through the same concept as when I saw her first. Interest in her silent gruff demeanor, and as the season progressed, learn more about her character. Jane and Lee, that...that would have been something. Of course I wonder if Lilly, Christa, Omid and Molly ever met Jane, it would have been an interesting experience. For me and other Jane fans.

But regarding Kenny, I fear my opinions on him would remain the same.

  • Only if Jane was pulling shady stunts on a regular basis.

To me, she was a character who talked sense. By the time she showed up, I was practically wanting to join Carver's group because my group was a bunch of bickering idiots and Kenny was continuing his abusive relationship tendencies of flipping out at any slight and later apologizing for his increasingly disruptive behavior (I was playing as silent & traumatized and not talking Kenny down, so he was creating tons of conflict because he never listened to anyone and never backed down). Jane identified the problem personalties in the group and I 100% agreed with her accessment.

And the game kept thrusting said problems in my face and insisting I liked them.

Kenny, for his part, was always a high maintainance friend who was constantly throwing any time you disagreed with him in your face... and whose default reaction was to blame the player character for any misfortune. I spent most of S1 trying to get him killed because I wanted nothing to do with an emotionally manipulative toxic "friend", eventually succeedeeded, then had to repeat the process in S2.

The forced relationship with Kenny is why I put S1 and S2 at the bottom of the Telltale games. For such a divisive character, they really didn't plan on a large chunk of people loathing him... even after they had to have known about it from reactions to S1.

  • I would always side with Kenny but I would certainly have more of a connection towards Jane if she was part of the original group

  • Probably. One of the main problems I had with Jane's character is that we only got about 2 episodes to truly get any insight into her personality, and before you know it, the writers were already pitting her against Kenny anyway. The same Kenny who was the last remnant of season 1 and who I knew a lot better.

If she'd been introduced in season 1, I'd have had more time to build up a better connection with the character. Not to say I would've stop Kenny from killing her, but ya know...

  • It would have absolutely made Jane a better character as a whole. I would've liked to have seen her in S1 with her sister, then perhaps they leave with Lily. Next we meet up with her, she's alone. It would give us a connection to her 'previous group' as well as an attachment to the tale of her sister as we'd have known her.

By having her always leave with Lily, this also assists the conflict with Kenny.

Of course, that would probably also once again beg the question, why not just use Lilly?

  • Yes, using Lily instead of inventing Jane was one thought I fully supported back in S2 discussions when S2 was out. That also would've shown a more definitive divide between choosing Kenny/Other Antagonist, as there were people during talks in S1 that would've loved the option to leave with Lily at the RV.

  • Oh, even better!
And I just pulled that train of thought out of my ear.
