"Bittersweet ending" (spoilers for Detroit Become Human)
So before when they said it was going to be a bittersweet ending most people couldn't comprehend how they could successfully kill off Clem or AJ in a "bittersweet" way, I think it could definitely work if they did it similar to this ending from Detroit Become Human:
For example, the whole premise of Kara and Alice's story is too be free, as well as Alice wanting a mother and Kara wanting a daughter, at the end, right as they have finally completed their goal to be free, they die. And Alice's last words are "I love you mom". This right here is a great example of bittersweet, and I think it could definitely work as an ending for the final season.

If this game goes for a multiple ending approach, an ending like this would be pretty interesting. I would accept it if AJ said a line like that to Clem but, I don't think AJ would say the line like that. He already seems like a smart kid, from the 3 minutes we got to see him at his current age and He should know from Clem by now about his real parents and that She was there to take care of him when they passed. So with that, it wouldn't be right for him to call her "Mom" given the circumstances.
But feel free to prove me wrong, Telltale
[Disclaimer: I have not seen DBH yet so I don't know how close these two have in common with Clem and AJ's relationship.]
One thing is for sure, they could use some tips from detroit.
Relatively similar:
Kara met alice and rescued Alice from abuse and they had to survive together in a world which is trying to kill them, all alice wanted was a mother and kara wanted a daughter
Only for Story Branching
Since is the last season I feel like multiple endings should be a must.
But after all the trouble we went for AJ in S2 and 3 that little shit better not die. Besides, it wouldn't make sense, why help a little kid survive and train him to survive if he's just going to die, AJ is like a beacon of hope, a symbol saying "Look babies can survive and grow up in a zombie apocalypse".
At this point in TWD world people are rebuilding, there are well shaped cities and people probably started to populate them again, if Clem wanted to get rid of the kid like the teenager mom she is she could leave it with Javi. But not do some assisted suicide on a what, 4/5 years old kid?.
