The new games will never live up to the originals.

    Why? Mostly because you're older.

A lot of people here LOVE the first two Monkey Island games and I would have to agree with them; they're great games. However, my favorite game is Curse because, well, I started with Curse. I have a good feeling that the first game you play will beat out the others due to the nostalgia factor, and the notion that games are more enthralling when you're younger. To play the previous two I waited years before I found them in a vintage pack of LucasArts games.

You could probably write an equation for it. Fun = Quality / abs[13 - Age].

Fun would be maximized around Age 13...still young enough to really enjoy games but not too young to be confused on the puzzles or understand the jokes.

I believe all the MI games had great quality and would then be a toss up based on when you played them. As for EMI, the departure from clickable items to "Guybrush head-turners", along with the convulted plot made that game a little less exciting than the three. I'd still argue it's a good game though, and had it been my first I'd enjoy it a lot more.

Yeah, speak for yourself. I even find Tales to be better than MI2 which I played back in my early ages.

Well, I played Curse first, then Escape, then Secret, then Revenge and then Tales. So, being introduced to the Monkey Island series through Curse, I will always enjoy Curse the best : )

I call crap on this. I loved Sam and Max: Hit the Road when I was younger, and yet I see Season Two of Telltale's Sam and Max to be the better product.

Secret had a lot of flaws, and even Lechuck's Revenge could be topped. It would just take a lot. Maybe the Telltale Team is too in love with the franchise to make it truly shine brighter than the original games, I don't know, the series is nowhere near done yet and I'd like to reserve that judgement for the final episode. But a game CAN be as good as its predecessors, and you shouldn't tell the developers that this isn't what they should be aiming to do.

Sam and Max had/has a LOT of adult humor that would make it a more enjoyable game at a somewhat older age. Sam and Max doesn't fit into this equation; it's like an 8 year old playing Leisure Suit Larry.

I'm not saying that everyone liked the original games better than Tales, but an overwhelming majority will whether they choose to admit it or not. Also, would the 13-year old version of you enjoy Tales more than you all do now? I would suggest he/she would.

Well of course it can, but Tales really isn't doing anything revolutionary here. There's no "Wow, I've never done anything like this in a video game ever" moment. For a lot of people the original games were one of the first Adventure games they've ever played. It was a completely NEW experience at a younger age, something Tales can't provide.

For you that is. I played plenty of adventure game before I played MI. It wasn't the first adventure game to come out. It wasn't the first adventure with pirates either or the first comedy adventure game to come out and it was hardly revolutionary even at the time. It was a fun little game with decent graphics, catchy music and I enjoyed it. I can still enjoy other, newer games, just as I enjoyed MI when it came out. If these games don't seem to be of any use to you, have you considered getting a new hobby?

I think the thing that trumps this is the fact that by far the two most popular entries in the MI series (MI2, CMI) were sequels. While most people accept that the first Monkey Island was great, or at the very least good, there is only a small group of fans who think it is the best one. SoMI is widely accepted to have been outdone by both of its first two sequels.

I played the games in the last five years ago, all out of order, and guess what - 2 and 3 are my favourites. 3 was the first I played, and I played the first two a year or two ago. To me, Escape and Tales haven't even come close to beating them(of course, they're both brilliant games nonetheless). And this was before I heard all the rage about how 2 and 3 are the best games. Also, hype doesn't affect my opinions much.

I think those games have a charm to them. The puzzles, humor, story and art are what I like about them. So I can't really say for sure if it's a nostalgia factor...

I believe upcoming MI games would be exactly like the first two if they brought back Steve Purcell as the concept artist and brought Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert back into the equation.

Purcell's art style has changed considerably since then, and Gilbert was already in the equation this time.

True, but not to nearly the extent he was for the first two games.

But I agree with your general idea. Even if you got together ALL the same people, they've changed.

I wouldnt want it to go back to the old style no offence to anyone cos they where great but monkey island is an evolving game and I love the new direction being taken

I'm sure we can make mods for those... :p

Actually I started with EoMI, and Tales is my favorite so far.
I don't like the others... The puzzles are unlogical and mostly annoying.
