Which Monkey Island game was your first?

edited September 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I did search the forum first to see if there were a similar thread, but I didn't find any. So hopefully this is the first thread where this is polled.

Which Monkey Island game did you play first, ever?

Sorry for some grammar errors :P. English is not my native tounge.
  • edited September 2009
Your grammar is fine. Especially considering what native speakers do to the language when they post on the internet, I wouldn't have noticed if you didn't mention it. :)

My first Monkey Island was the first Monkey Island, the way it really should be.

First one was Monkey Island 2 maybe in 1998 or before... I can't really remember. Then when my dad finally allowed me to surf the net I managed to get CoMI demo and kept watching EfMI screens and I kinda went on illegal ways to get my hands on SoMI (If they were still selling those old games at that time I would be happy to buy one). Then I got EfMI when they used to package pc games in large lovely boxes (sadly, my mom threw that large box without knowing how valuable it is to me :( ). last game was CoMI, when I luckily found somebody that had the game.

Of course now every one can buy all the games in single one package. but in my days, finding a monkey game is an adventure itself :p

    Curse. The first 2 were made before me. ;_;
Although I managed to snag the first two about five years ago

    SMI in English, EGA.

I'm mentioning English, because I'm Austrian, so my mother tongue is not English, but German. I was quite young back then and played it with my dad who translated everything for me.
SMI is the reason why I started to learn English.

In order of me originally playing them:

    SMI demo -> CMI demo -> EMI demo -> SMI -> CMI -> MI2 -> EMI -> TMI

That's spread out over quite a few years, I never actually played the full games until around 2001.

Maybe I should make a comment aswell, since I actually started the thread. The first game for me was in fact Curse, but I'm old enough to have been able to play the first ones aswell. My brother played both Secret and Revenge, back in its original days.

So the order would be Curse -> Secret -> Revenge -> Escape -> Tales ..

All english/international versions.. (well, Wally has always been called Wally for me, and not Waldo as the british version apparently has been called..(?))

I'm not sure that's right... he's always been Wally to me too and I'm in England. 'Where's Wally' is 'Where's Waldo' in America.

I played them in the right order =]

LeChuck's Revenge was the first for me and got me hooked. Followed by Secret (on a shiny CD - newish at the time!), then Curse (still remember taking that gorgeous big box home) then Escape. And now Tales which just seems to be getting better and better.

I can produdly say that I played the MI games in their correct order. Granted, I was VERY young when I played MI 1 on my Amiga 500 back in the old days, but I still have very fond memories about it, because I played it together with my dad. Those were great times where we spent so much time together on that game. Maybe this is (among other factors) why MI has a special place in my heart.

I played them all in order.

MI1 was included on first computer ever, and I bought MI2 as soon as it came out.

MI3 & 4 were purchased on release dates for them (although when I bought 4, I didn't check the system requiremenets and had to wait almost a year after I bought it to have a system powerful enough to play it).

And the telltale games have been great so far (pre-ordered the day they were announced)!

You played it on a great machine :). Nice to have some more Amigaists here .. :)

For me it was Monkey Island 2, and it was also the first game i bought with my own pocket money along with The Settlers on my Amiga 500, Yes I remember the 9 disks or was it 11 now I can't actually remember lol.:D
But it was and is still an excellent game and probably one of a select few I play over and over again.

I have to confess that I played Curse first: I was born about halfway between Secret and LeChuck's Revenge being released, so probably wasn't in a state to play them! I really, really loved that game when I was a kid, though, and I'll never forget how excited I was when my dad bought me a copy of that CD with the first and second games on it. Walking around the SCUMM Bar and Woodtick for the first time was just as exciting for a kid as playing Curse: kids have an imagination, they don't get annoyed by "dated graphics" like boring adults do.

I also remember getting excited for Escape and getting it on release, and loving it, maybe not as much as the other three, but still loving it. Nowadays I'm a cynical 18 year old and can see its flaws, but I still have a little soft spot for it even when it bores me to tears.

That's one of the things I'm enjoying about Tales: it's like it brings out the little kid in me. Very few things do that nowadays, with everything having to be dark, gritty, serious business etc. I watch Doctor Who for the same reason.

This is exactly the same as my story in every detail! I had to do MI2 on my own though because it was too frustrating for my dad. I don't think he appreciated the 12 disks either. :D Good times, I love my miggy.

So I strarted with the first. Or maybe with the demo of EMI. I am not sure about that.

I played Escape first, which I borrowed from a friend and never gave back, then tracked down Curse at a used game shop, spent a few years trying to get it to work on various computers. The same friend who "gave" me Escape later (really) gave me Secret and Revenge. Then I bought Tales.

I missed the first two when they were new. I was a Sierra kid for a while, and I started playing LucasArts games with Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max (although I also go Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken around then).

So basically I skipped right over Monkey Island for no particular reason. Curse was my first, then escape, then 1. I still haven't played much of 2, believe it or not. I have it sitting around waiting for when I have free time.

But 2 is the best one!! I demand you play it - NOW!

It's worth playing LeChuck's Revenge for the last half-hour alone: probably the series' finest hour. The rest of the game is good stuff too, although the map hunt in the middle drags a bit on replays. Scabb has an incredible atmosphere, up there with Melee.

No no, you still have it wrong.

Wally in Monkey Island is Wally in America and in England.

I don't think anyone in Monkey Island is named Waldo anywhere.

Where's Wally is a British "find the object" series of books. It's filled with pictures of crowds, and you're supposed to find the character "Wally" in each picture.

When that book series came to America, the character was renamed "Waldo".

    British Cover:
    s%20Wally%20Now.jpg

    US Cover:
    WheresWaldoNowSE.jpg

Monkey Island's Wally is called Wally in every English language version of the game. You probably saw a joke about the character that referred to the Where's Wally book character, a joke Americans are less likely to get because they call the book character Waldo even though Monkey Island's Wally has the same name.

Escape was my first (it was my first PS2 game) But i didn't get very fr, because we didn't have a memory card at the time, so i got bored very quickly). I then played Curse round my cousins house whilst on holiday there, and fell in love with it. I brought it as soon as possible, and completed that and then moved back to Escape.

    So
    Escape->Curse->Escape->Secret (i ashamedly pirated it)->Tales

I have yet to play Lechucks revenge, and am planning on getting Special edition Next month when i get my own laptop.

Interesting poll, hopefully many people'll vote. :)

I too am proud to say I played them all in chronological order, and more or less within the release window. SMI was fairly new when I first played it on my Amiga 500, in 1991. In '92 when MI2 came out, I ordered it from a norwegian gaming club called DNH, which was short for Den Norske Hjemmedataklubben. It was also the first original game I ever bought - money was short on me and I had no chance of buying more than one game every second month if I was to stay on the legal side of the fence, and only if I didn't spend money on ANYTHING else. So I pirated a lot.

I borrowed COMI from a friend and finished it within three days when it was released. I didn't have a PC, so I played on one of the school's PCs. I bought my own PC just in time for EMI - basically, it was the reason I bought it, or at least a big part of it. When I got the game, I found out my graphics card was useless (one of those integrated ones). So I was forced to buy a new card, so I picked up a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI. Which was later used in my A1200 tower, but that's another story. :)

In the swedish versions of the children books the character is called "Hugo" (thanks Google :P)

"Hitta Hugo" would be translated to "Find Hugo" ...

Curse of Monkey Island was my first. I was at a family friend's house when they were playing it and I remember it being up to the rhyming insult sword fight between Captain Rottingham and Guybrush. Loved Guybrush from that point on, granted at the time I had no idea who he was.
Fast forward a few years later and EMI came out (as well as the brand new PS2) so my cousin brought that over and at first I didn't know who the blonde headed pirate was until Elaine yelled out his name and I found out that it was none of other than Mr. Mighty Pirate.

So in a sense, while it was EMI that got me to investigate more on MI, it was CMI that hooked me. :)

    Smi.

Also, I had no idea Waldo was called Wally in other parts of the world.
  • edited September 2009
SMI (CD edition) then CMI then EMI then Tales.

Just so you don't think I skipped a chapter, I did play MI2, I'm just not sure if I played it before CMI, after CMI, or after EMI (less likely but possible), that's how little of an impression it originally made on me. I honestly have no idea and can't remember. I remember when I first played it, I gave up on it for a while because I couldn't figure out the skeleton puzzle. Don't worry I did beat it in the end.

SMI and CMI I shared with my friends and they loved them as well. Even a girl I know really liked it *shock*.

My first was secret of monkey island on the amiga followed by le chucks revenge.
I then played escape on my sons ps2.
I didn't play curse till about three years ago when my son bought his pc.
It didn't work on his xp pc but worked on his new laptop.(thank goodness)

Mine was The Secret of Monkey Island, played it some time in 1995, at age 11. Got me obsessed immediately. :D

About half a year later, I got LeChuck's Revenge. Loved it, too, but not as much as the first one.

Back in 1997, I refused to play The Curse of Monkey Island, because it had this strange-looking comic graphics. But I'm glad I finally caught up with it 10 years later! :D I LOVE that game now! (And I'm SO glad I played it in English instead of German, because Dominic Armato rocks my socks!)

Never played Escape, and I'm never sure if I even want to. Well, and now we got Tales. :)
  • edited September 2009
For me too the first was Secret of Monkey Island on the Amiga. Also played MI2 on the Amiga... it was on 11 (eleven!) 3.5" discs... and no hard drive... I still have blisters on my hands from swapping... :D The rest I played on PC. Every one the moment they released!
  • edited September 2009
First played Secret of Monkey Island in CGA (and weeks later in EGA) on 5,25 floppy's (I believe the game came on 8 discs) back when it was first released.

I was really into sierra games then and I was amazed by the graphics and the fun gameplay...

got LeChuck's Revenge the day it was released and the same goes for the other two.

Loved the first three... hated (and still hate) escape... for it's gameplay and graphics and out-of-line story.

I played Monkey Island 2 at a friend's house after I stumbled upon it deep in his Windows 3.1 directory.

Then I saw MONKEY ISLAND MADNESS! for $30 (AU) somewhere back about 1998 and bought that. It had the first two games and a demo of Curse. So in order of finishing the games, I did that in order. But I played MI2 first, even if it was just briefly.

Got Curse soon afterwards, EMI as soon as it was released and now Tales as soon as it was released.
