I'm going to do something a bit different and suggest an all-British cast for The Secret of Monkey Island (please be warned, most of these are full of filthy language. They are British, after all):

Guybrush Threepwood: Simon Bird (Will from The Inbetweeners)

LeChuck/Fester Shinetop: Philip Glenister (Gene Hunt from Life On Mars) with Marshall Lancaster (Chris from LOM) as Bob

Elaine Marley: No idea, but get a decent actress rather than a bimbo just there for eye candy.

Otis and Meathook: Robert Webb and David Mitchell (Peep Show)

Stan: Paterson Joseph (does it matter if he's black?)

Herman Toothrot: Tom Baker (that clip's from 30 years ago, he's older now)

    Lookout: Bernard Cribbins

    Cannibal: Richard Ayoade

The cast from the sitcom Black Books would fit perfect in monkey island.. :)
Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey and Tamsin Greig ...

Never seen Black Books (sacrilege, I know...) but Bill would be an awesome Herman and Dylan an excellent Otis.

Yeah, Richard Ayoade would make an amazing cannibal.

Guybrush - Christopher Masterson (Francis from Malcolm in the Middle)

    Stan - Jim Carrey

Herman Toothrot - George Carlin (even though he's dead now)

    Can't think of any more

Ok, here we go. I know there is NO chance that all of these would be in it! that movie would cost a TON. But some picks are better than others. Don't be mad that I left out Mr. Goodsoup, I couldnt think of anyone... Oh, I'm GOing to bold what I think are really good choices.

    Guybrush Threepwood - Dominic Armato

Ghost/Zombie/Demon/Stone/Human Pirate LeChuck - John Travolta " i just like him as a bad guy"

    Elaine Marley - Kate Winslet

    Carla Swordmaster - Sandra Bullock

    Otis - David Spade

    Stan - Dennis Quaid

    Herman Toothrot - Tom Hanks

Largo Legrande - Bruce willis Seriously the dude is SHORT like 5"2 I doubt he'd take the role though.

    Kate Capsize - Sarah Silverman

Wally - Jason Bryant Acuña AKA weeman

Barbershop Trio - Danny Devito, Glenn Thomas Jacobs AKA Kane, Christopher Walken

Griswold Goodsoup - I wouldnt have him in the movie.

    Winslow - Morgan Freeman

    Morgan LeFlay - Jessica Alba

    DeCava - John Lithgow

    Voodoo Lady - Whoopi Goldberg

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! No-one let Jim Carrey near my lovely Monkey Island! Stan makes me want to hit him, but in a good way. Jim Carrey makes me want to hit him full stop.

As an aspiring filmmaker, I've often thought of what my dream cast would be if I could get the MI movie rights. The following are the names I've landed on most frequently/recently.

Guybrush - I've been saying NPH for years. He's one of the most brilliant and versatile comic actors working today, and his voice, while not identical, is pretty similar to Dominic's.

LeChuck - Tom Wilson. A very funny man who's already my favorite movie villain, so why shouldn't he be my favorite video game villain? He can switch from funny to intimidating instantly, which I think is important in a LeChuck.

Elaine Marley - Amy Adams is the thought that crosses my mind the most, although I'm not sure if she has quite the right presence.

Carla - She may not look EXACTLY the part, but Gina Torres from "Firefly" could pull off the "badass" aspect.

Meathook - Bruce Willis. The man can be very funny in the right role.

Stan - either James Roday from "Psych", or Will Arnett

    Herman Toothrot - Eric Idle

Voodoo Lady - Aloma Wright (Laverne from "Scrubs")

Largo LaGrande - Warwick Davies. Obvious, perhaps, but still.

ugh. I just typed this up and had links for ALL of them but it didnt post for some reason and got deleted.

Anyway I'm just gunna put names and descriptions if you dont know who it is.

Guybrush Threepwood - Neil Patrick Harris

Ghost/Zombie/Demon/Stone/Human Pirate LeChuck - It's a cop out but Geoffrey Rush was perfect. If not, Bill Nighy (stepdad in Sean of the Dead, Rufus Scrimegour in Harry Potter 7) would fit this role too.

Elaine Marley - If she could do a British Accent, Evangeline Lily, if not Kate Winslet.

Carla Swordmaster - Jada Pinckett Smith

Otis - Jeremy Davies (Daniel Farady from LOST)

    Stan - Jim Carey

    Herman Toothrot - Steve Martin

Largo Legrande - Dominic Monaghan? Has to be FAKE tough not real tough, he did have a bra. NAthan Lane if we wanted really wacky.

Kate Capsize - Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet from LOST)

Wally - Billy Boyd (Pippin from LOTR)

Barbershop Trio - Danny Devito, Adrien Brody and hmph... get back to me.

    Griswold Goodsoup - Michael Cane

Winslow - Leslie David Barker (Stanley from Office)

Morgan LeFlay - Angelina Jolie or if looks dont matter Helena B Carter

    DeCava - John Lithgow

    Voodoo Lady - Queen Latifah

I totally Agree, I have a list I am updating using some of really Good Examples. I totally forgot about Firefly. Firefly was really good to, I'm sorry it had to end like it did.

Totally agree with Stan / Jim Carrey... was going to suggest it myself. For a while I've liked the idea of Zach Braff as Guybrush.

I have to Totally Disagree, with Angelina. She is WAY to old to be Morgan, Morgan has to seem young and perky, something she just doesnt have. Badass - Check, Sexy - Ding! Ding! Ding!, Young - Ummm, no. Helen I can see her as morgan in the face, but I still dont know.

Some really good ideas that I'd never considered in this thread. I personally don't think they should do an MI movie, though. I think Pirates of the Caribbean was almost perfect since it has all (or some of) the Monkey Islandishness of a Monkey Island movie but none of the "ruins Monkey Island" factor.

Wow, I'm surprised at the amount of people who don't detest Jim Carey with every fiber of their being. Stan is Stan. If Jim Carey played him, he wouldn't be Stan: he would be Jim Carey.
  • edited October 2009
Well, yeah Jim Carey definitely can get carried away... I think if he TRIED to be Stan he could pull it off better than most.

    Omg, dude, Glenister, awesome!
And, besides, cool to meet someone who knows Life on Mars (the UK-version, people!) as well.

I'd give Silverwolfpet and Majus major parts! Because their accents are AWESOME.

    Majus could obviously be Guybrush.

    Totally.

    He definitely looks the part.

    ...Well, he sounds it.

Man, I'd never thought of NPH as a possible candidate for Guybrush, but I think I could see it.

Still, my dream cast would be:

Guybrush Threepwood - a blond Zach Braff

Ghost/Zombie/Demon/Stone/Human Pirate LeChuck - Ian McShane

It was actually pretty big over here. Definitely one of the best series I've watched, and anyone who disagrees is a great soft sissy nancy girly French bender Man-United supporting POOF! Ashes to Ashes ain't bad either. Tried watching the American version at one point, and got bored of it quickly. It was a bit too clean-cut for my liking, less of the political incorrectness we love Hunt for. Ever thought of doing an "I wonder what happens in Life on Mars?" It would be awesome. ;)

But yeah, Glenister would be an amazing LeChuck. He has the right combination of humour, awesomeness and sinister edge. I'm sure if the cockney Glenister can do such a good Manchester accent he could do a piratey voice no problem.

Life on Mars was one of my favourite serieses, but I don't think Glenister would make a very good LeChuck... He'd make a great Shinetop, but for some reason I can't see him as LeChuck (even if they are the same person)

He'd be pretty fearsome with the right make-up, even if he'd be very different to Earl Boen. I think it's important that if they made a movie they don't just choose people as close to the current voices as possible. I'd far prefer a new take on the classic characters to third-rate Dom and Earl impressionists. It's like different productions of a play almost: no-one wants all Hamlets to be the same, and in the same way it'd be nice to have a new interpretation of LeChuck. After all, in the first two games no-one had any voices. (Note that I'm not belittling Dom and Earl, I love both of them, and that's almost WHY I think this)

    Christopher Walken as Guybrush!

    Elaine Marley - Kate Winslet
For the record, I'm totally okay with this.

Screw Jim Carrey, Will Arnett (GOB in Arrested Development) would be a perfect Stan!

If he wasn't so damn ubiquitous I'd suggest John Barrowman for Stan.

It's nothing to do with the voice, I just don't think he'd be fearsome/aggressive enough (in the appropriate way) as LeChuck. The best LeChuck next to Earl Boen was Bill Nighy as Davy Jones in the last two PoTC films

...really? I see LeChuck as more of a Barbosa, and not just because Barbosa is also an undead pirate.

I posted my dream cast complete with pictures but it didn't post for some reason :( Here's the more boring picture-less version then...

Guybrush Threepwood - Zach Braff (Scrubs, Garden State)

Ghost/Zombie/Demon/Stone/Human Pirate LeChuck - Ian McShane (Deadwood, Death Race)

Elaine Marley - Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, the upcoming Prince of Persia movie)

Carla Swordmaster - Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Men in Black II)

    Otis - Rick Gonzalez (Reaper)

Stan - Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld, The Tick)

Herman Toothrot - David Kelly (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mean Machine)

Wally - Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings, Rudy)

Barbershop Trio - Harvey Fierstein (Independence Day, Death to Smoochy), Billy Connolly (The Last Samurai, The Boondock Saints), Hugh Laurie (House, Stuart Little)

Griswold Goodsoup - Oliver Platt (Frost/Nixon, A Time to Kill)

Winslow - Chi McBride (The Terminal, The Frighteners)

Morgan LeFlay - Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Tru Calling)

DeCava - Sacha Baron Cohen (Sweeney Todd, Borat)

Voodoo Lady - Jennifer Lewis (Madea's Family Reunion, Mystery Men)

I'm not sure I'd even see it if Zack Braff was Guybrush. Never worked out what everyone sees in Scrubs, particularly since Peep Show does the whole "internal narration" thing so much more effectively.

I can't think of anybody in particular for any of the other roles, but I think Laura Prepon would be great as Elaine! She was the redhead on That 70s Show, and Donna's personality is pretty close to Elaine's.

I personally hate the idea of a Monkey Island movie with actual actors! I think that if there were to be any MI movie then it should be animated with all of the game's current voice actors.

I am going to get flamed for saying this, I can feel my arm hairs burning off already but....

I think a stop motion or computer animated version done by Tim Burton in the style of The Corpse Bride or Nightmare Before with music by Michael Land AND Danny Elfman with Johnny Depp as Guybrush would be pretty fantastic. Earl Boen or Bill Nighy or Geoffrey Rush as LeChuck, could use whoever else you wanted for the other voices.
