Cast the MI Movie

I prefer the idea of a live action movie to an animated one, just because in the games themselves we already have five different interpretations of what an animated MI world looks like. I'd like to see a live-action stylized take on the world.

True. If you want to see an animated Monkey Island movie, just play the third game again.

Ryan Gosling would make a perfect Guybrush. And Amy Adams could be Elaine.

I've thought a lot about this previously, and here's the casting I've come up with for some of the characters--

    Guybrush: Michael Cera
Elaine: Keira Knightley (I know it seems like typecasting, but she's really good, and I definitely prefer Elaine with a British voice)
    LeChuck: John Rhys Davies
Stan: Kevin Spacey (Because I always pictured Stan as a Professor Harold Hill from the Music Man type, and I think Spacey could pull that off nicely)
Herman Toothrot: Michael Palin (Because he'd be perfect for the role, and he doesn't do enough acting nowadays)
Wally: Warwick Davis (Because Warwick Davis *IS* Wally, from the size, to the voice, right down to the hair color.)
Captain Kate Capsize: Frankly, I don't see why she couldn't be played by the actress she was named after: Kate Capshaw, AKA Mrs. Steven Spielberg.
Otis: Dominic Armato (Because if I were making a live-action Monkey Island movie, I'd want to give Dom a role, and Otis seems like a character he could do a lot with.)
Murray: Denny Delk (Because, seriously, casting anyone else in the role would just be a crime against humanity.)

I've never been able to come up with a satisfactory actress for the Voodoo Lady, though someone suggested Queen Latifah, and she'd be pretty good. Though she might be a character I'd go for an unknown for. Or at least an established character actress who's not necessarily well-known. Actually, come to think of it, Nichelle Nichols would be a good choice if she could do the accent.

I always keep this images in my mind:

Elaine in the SoMI (original version) close-ups = Young Nicole Kidman
Guybrush in MI2:LCR = Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Guybrush in CoMI = David Schwimmer
Elaine in ToMI = Jennifer Aniston
    Voodoo Lady = Whoopy Goldberg

Tim Roth as Largo is another great idea! I also like Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams as Guyrbrush and Elaine. Still, I think Stacy Keach would make the ultimate LeChuck. I already mentioned this but... c'mon.

I personally hate the idea of a Monkey Island movie with actual actors! I think that if there were to be any MI movie then it should be animated with all of the game's current voice actors.

Yes I agree with this wholeheartedly. I think an animated movie would be a tremendous success, and using the current voice actors is the way to go. Somehow, I get the feeling that making a live action version would spoil the characters for me. I've been so used to hearing Dom and co. bring the game to life, that anyone else playing the roles would seem incredibly strange. I'm all for an animated movie though, maybe even a trilogy. Especially if Telltale aren't planning a further season, and Lucasarts give it the go-ahead of course!

That thought never entered my mind... but YES... Bruce would be perfect!

I can't believe Campbell as Stan never crossed my mind before.

Now I'm debating whether a Sam Raimi-directed Monkey Island would be awesome or awful. On the one hand, the comedy-spooky blend might be right up his alley. On the other hand...Spider-Man 3.
  • edited November 2009
Spider-man 3 was not entirely his fault... what was good you could tell was all him.. what was bad you could tell was forced in by the studio.

Bruce Campbell is a decent choice, but a thought entered my mind...

    Maybe... just maybe...

How about Shia Labeouf as Guybrush? He has the right sort of look and he is great at acting pathetic. He'd be perfect for the role! Well, at least he'd be perfect for a SMI Guybrush.

And he would be great for both the Indy jokes and the Giant Monkey Transformer scene.
