How Should ToMI End?

edited October 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
Every good story must come to an end. Sadly this includes the incomplete but already epic Tales of Monkey Island :(. So, accepting that the series will end in two months time, how do you think the series should end? Happily like CoMI, SoMI and EfMI? Confusingly like LeChuck's Revenge? "To Be Continued" or leaving room for yet anther sequel? Badly? Sadly? Ironically? Stupidly? Unexpectedly? During Mid-sentence? Opinions?

    NOT during mid-sentence :)

Guybrush should wake up from his Big-Whoop-Curse! He is back in LeChucks Fortress! The End!
    Now it’s Rons turn.

Agree. I think they call that "Doing a Sopranos", dont they?

I've added a poll, but it only includes the normal or serious options.

Strange is good. I love the MI2-Ending, by the way.

I hope they'll get rid of the pox but so that the story won't end yet and there will be more tales of Monkey Island in close future.

I like happy endings or open endings - so, happy or "to be continued" would be my choice.
  • edited October 2009
How about they all suddenly turn into children running around a giant theme park, followed by the most confusing ending of all time? Oh, and then we can wait 5 years for a sequel that just brushes everything under the carpet?

I'm sure everyone would enjoy that :D

That would be pretty funny. And most fans would buy it.

I think the strange endings have always worked for MI. As long as it's not like Escapes ending.. I certainly don't want to see a cliffhanger, developers use that far too frequently these days in an attempt to get us to buy more games, and I just hate it. If you're going to tell a story, end it. Don't be arrogant enough to assume people are going to be interested enough to buy multiple gamees, just make them good and people will care!

That said, if there's just some kind of hint or build up to another game, that's fine, as long as the sponge/pox story is brought to a close.

I'd be happy with pretty much any ending, as long as Guybrush doesn't end up dumping Elaine. I think that ending would just ruin the entire game for me.

It's been a great and satisfying game so far,I don't know why some people want a sad or shitty ending but I don't, I think it would ruin everything for me and it would be a insult to someone atleast.

There are few AWFUL forseeable directions tales could take with this game and I really hope that they don't ruin the game with them.

I'm really enjoying this game and I'm high on positive vibes, the last thing I want is for them to give us a 3rd grader's bad boy action figure beats down action figure ending. Ruthless, destructive, obnoxious, childish and stupid ending. Their responsible for the franchise's mainstream story right now, I hope to God that they don't do something stupid or utterly degrading to it.

Be careful what you’re doing, Telltale. Angry people out there. :p

I have to say, I feel almost the same about it. An ending like that would probably not ruin the entire game for me, but I'd be very disappointed.

But there are many people out there who - for some strange reasons - would want Guybrush to end up with Morgan, it seems. So, in order not to disappoint any of the players, I guess the best solution would indeed be for the player to decide who Guybrush ends up with? Two alternative endings for every taste.

And you know what, alternative endings aren't such a bad idea at all! Remember the Indiana Jones adventure games by LucasArts? They both had several alternative endings!

    Well, just a thought.
That said, if there's just some kind of hint or build up to another game, that's fine, as long as the sponge/pox story is brought to a close.
    Well said!

As MI is still a LucasArt franchise, Telltale presumably has to leave it the way they found it, i.e. Guybrush having two hands and united with Elaine, LeChuck evil and banished, but hinting at a comeback. Even with this seemingly "happy" conclusion pretty much a given, things can get pretty dark and sad along the way. I imagine that somehow the pox get concentrated in Elaine, and LeChuck, out of his heart of gold and his love for Elaine, willingly sacrifice himself, absorbing the whole load of disease. So, finally, Guybrush has to go against (and destroy) the man/the being who has saved his wife. I would love a poignant ending like this.

    Haha!

I would absolutely LOVE that, by the way. If we'd realize that all the games after LeChuck's Revenge were a series of dream sequences or something like that. We can get a long explosion of exposition about how each game represented different parts of Guybrush's psyche or something. Haha.

Anything's better than Curse's ending, anyway.

As long as Guybrush's hard work is actually appreciated and he is not run past by Elaine and left on the edge of a cliff for a stupid monkey, who is is just thrown in and supposed to be accepted as a familiar character for Guybrush even though he never appeared in any previous games, to kick him off.

Seriously, what was with that in Escape? While I liked the game, it might as well have been called Monkey Island: Bash Guybrush till no end. I hated that the game ended with the character we all love in a deadly situation and not one person truly appreciating all the back breaking work he did.

there is no way in hell guybrush will dump elaine. im personaly hopeing for a cliff hanger. finnish up with the pox story and leave some cliffhanger to lead onto another story

I think that MI can, after almost 20 years, finally evolve to a mature and emotionally engaging story, and for that to happen the main characters need to go through something profound. I would simply hate it if the game ends like a typical simpsons episode where everything goes back to the way it was before
Having said that, I think that Guybrush and Elaine splitting up would give us a whole new prespective on everyone, but I guess there are other ways. What would you say if elaine died at the end?

NO NO NO! That's the point! You know it and you miss it entirely! Over 20 years we've evolved and matured feelings towards the story, their is already an engaging and emotional story that we've matured up to.

Having it ruined with deviation would just be a kick in the balls. We don't need to have a horrid break up or anything like that. The World is messed up enough as it is with bad news, and bloody OPHRA!! we don't need to bring it to comedy and to Monkey Island....

The best ending would be to concrete the love story and end it in an AWE moment that gets to all the hearts of the fans, knocks them off them feet senselssly! A deep, mature love ending with sugar coated jokes like Murray hitching a ride home with them or something.

Haven't you bloody been paying damn monkey *BEEP* attention!? The series started off as a joke and we've developed mature and intellectual feelings towards its elements, such as the relationship between Guybrush and Elaine. Why the bloody hell do you think we are having serious conversations about it!?

Having them break up or have sociological problems with their marriage and file for a divorce or have an affair is not funny, it's not monkey island and I rather have my balls in a blender! Their love is strong but almost some how understated the best ending possible would be to give the fans a true love story to inspire the messed up World of today and to show some concrete and not to be on shaky grounds with some jerk off misfit and corrupt ending that will result in 1000 years of fan arguing and discontent.

It's already an emotional and mature ending, they just have to drive it home into our hearts!:mad:

I don't think Guybrush could handle this.

    With a big explosion.

I don't want anyone to die... Exept maybe DeSinge. I want Morgan and human LeChuck to hook up, while Guybrush and Elaine find why they love each other and what makes them click. And a ship sailing towards the sunrise.*

*- After the big explosion ofcourse.

*- After the big explosion ofcourse.

I wouldn't mind an element of tragedy somewhere in the remaining chapters, just as long as it doesn't consume the ending. It just seems that Morgan's character is being built up for a tragedy, probably if she redeems herself. The game has already proven to be very serious and emotional in parts, so having a tragic event does not seem out of reach at all and I think it would add to the story. The ending itself should be happy and conclusive, but a few sad parts here and there wouldn't hurt I think.

I think the crazy doctor will become the new Lechuck! plot twist!
  • edited October 2009
Actually from a practical and logical stand point the ending is already been established. Lechuck is the bad guy, Lechuck is always on the other end of the battle. The other half of some sort of struggle with Guybrush.

Even though he's a "good guy" there's a hint of relationship trouble between Guybrush and Elaine and since that is the "new struggle", that seems to exist, naturally, Lechuck and Guybrush will assume their normal roles, regardless of the situation and circumstances and we'll probably see a desired and expected out come, to smooth things off, and polish any rough edges.

I think they'll still play their roles but for originality sake and story purposes their characters have been drawn out for an emotional and friendly fan based relationship to pursue. Morgan is simply like the fans of the series drawn inward to make Guybrush act outwardly and to over look the special relationship he has to fans.

It's almost deadly expected of Lechuck and Guybrush to have some sort of struggle between each other regardless of the situation...

Their bringing out the most of human nature in all characters and all characters are being tested and hold onto elements of intrique, curosity and concern for the viewer. They had to bring Lechuck to a humane level to give it more of a conflict feeling and go for the originality bit but as I keep saying I think their roles will remain the same, thank God!

for once make a sad/strange ending that leaves us clueless. In every game, in every movie there is a happy ending. Make a sad one with a to be continued in it.

Just a stupid and a little off-topic question...
You don't seem to like CMI, so... how come you have an avatar with CMI Elaine on it?
    I'm just curious about that.

How about this we have a bunch of couples and the list is...

1). Winslow and DeSinge - They both seem open for anything.
2). Murray and the Voodoo Lady - They both can't move! a match made in heaven " A very EVIL Heaven with Voodoo and Curses Muah ha ha ha!"
3). Guybrush and Morgan - I think it's time for Guybrush to be free, we all know he isn't with Elaine
4).Elaine and LeChuck - Come'on LeChuck WANTS to worship her, Let him! If he can be a good guy and do it, fine!

    just my two cents

Vote: Strange. I love strange, unsuspected endings like ones from "Fight club", "6th sence" or Lynch's films.
...and I hope Morgan will end up with human LeChuck and de Singe will turn another arch-villian. Killing LeChuck over and over again gets boring.

Happily and "To Be Continued" or leaving room for a sequel
  • edited October 2009
I would hate a To Be Continued ending. You f***ers asking for that haven't been around long enough to know what a jinx that is and that most games that end that way never get continued. It's bad form in general too, and even if they were able to follow through, I think trying to push a sequel too soon is a mistake.

Haven't been around long enough? I'm 29 (or will be in a few days), been playing MI since the beginning and it still has yet to die out.... there have been times when it seemed like it would but it seems to always come back and do just fine.... have a little faith.
