Stan's coat - curious bug.

edited November 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
Just started playing the new chapter and I have a curious bug. The square pattern on Stan's coat is not moving together with Stan when Stan himself is moving (for example leaning left or right while talking. This produces the effect that the squares are in fact shifting on his coat.

Totally harmless but still I'm curious if anybody else getting this. Using a Radeon HD2600XT on Vista. Game graphic set to 9.

That's a running gag througout the Monkey Island series. Anything else would be shocking.

That's kinda how Stan's coat is supposed to act.

its not a bug, its a feature

That's how it's supposed to be. Actually a lot of artists do that in their cartoons. So that they don't spend so much time on all the animation. It's like the blue screen editing.

Getting Stan's jacket to look like it does now was #1 on our TO-DO list for this episode.

He's not kidding. I wrote it up as the very first bug in the episode. Teams of engineers worked tirelessly, forsaking the warmth of their wives and the laughter of their children, just to get that fershlugginer jacket to look right.

I nearly wept when I saw it.

Of course, I weep rather easily.

It's such a terrible bug that it retroactively infected every previous Monkey Island game...

    ;)

Nope wasn't joking - Honestly it's been years since I played the previous games, so I didn't remember.

I assume bailiff Hardtack standing in two places at once a screen away (courthouse entrance and jungle entrance) is also in that category.

When I heard about Stan coming back, I bet myself 10 euros this thread would pop up.

Hey, two of those don't count. If a Vaycaylian sauntered up and offered you candy, you'd cry too.

    ...Twice.

Honestly, this was my biggest concern: could the TTT handle Stan's jacket?

It appears that it can. Well done guys.

I must honestly say that I would have never believed there would be a thread like this. I was so sure nobody would believe this to be a bug, but I was wrong!

Anyway, great that Telltales managed to get the effect done so nicely. :)

I find it hilarious that in the first two Monkey Island games they did Stan's coat like that because it was far far easier than programing it realistically but in the new Monkey Island games the programmers have to go very far out of their way to achieve the same effect. Something that was originally a time saver has now turned into a focus, a number 1 priority even, according to Matt H.

If only they hadn't cut corners in the original games, then life would be much easier for people working on the games down the line :p

It's not a jacket, it's a portal into the plaid dimension.

Stan keep eternal vigal over it, lest it fall into the wrong hands.

    ...

Well, you didn't think he wears something like that voluntarily, did you?

just wanted to quote myself from another thread
Really nice job on stans coat texture. I was wondering if it was possible in 3d. Is it projected on the coat or something?

dunno if it can be projected because it's in 3d and stans shape should alter the plaid texture as well.
they probably won't tell the secret haha. just curious

I think the jacket came out great! There is a very slight translucent look to it (you can almost see the plain white model underneath it at times) but that is just nitpicking. I think they did an excellent job.

I'm not a newbie the problem that the most recent MI game I played was about 2-3 years ago... I really didn't remember that his pattern was supposed to be like that.

No need to defend yourself, just apologize to the broken-hearted engineers at tell-tale who poured their hearts and souls into getting the jacket just right.

They were told, that if anyone complained that the jacket looked wrong, they'd be given 50 lashes per thread view, and now.....LOOK AT WHAT YOU'VE DONE!!!!

    You cruel, cruel person.

I love the way Stan is introduced.

You're in the courtroom, the judge says "Where is that incompetent prosecutor?", the view cuts to an extreme close-up of THAT jacket and in the instant before anyone speaks, your heart almost pops with a sudden swell of childlike joy... :D

... or maybe that was just me. :)

I want one of those jackets
  • edited October 2009
^ So do I. Unfortunatly, that jacket is probably the most sci-fiy thing in all Monkey Island games, as I really don't see humanity developing the technology for it for at least another 200 years.

Can a Vaycaylian saunter if they don't have legs?

Unfortunately they put his picture up in the installer so the effect was totally ruined for me. Still an awesome job on the jacket.

You'll laugh but I got so used to TTG recycling the models for the characters, that I just thought they were two different people. It took me a while to realize that they're the same guy, not just share a model.
