E1 - It's good, but could be better.
E2, E3 - It's not the best, but it's up there!
E4 - Best in the franchise! (equaly with LeChuck's Revange)
Overall: "It's not the best, but it's up there!" so far.
Well TOMI's great but I will forever hold SOMI and especially LCR as THE greatest games ever. Probably because they are pretty much my childhood memories.
CMI beats TOMI just because of the music and voices and atmosphere and art and... yeah
Eh. My problem are the puzzles. While the humor (a bit more off color than previous installments) and the story are well thought out, the puzzles just aren't that logical for me. Maybe I'm just an idiot who shouldn't be playing adventure games anyway, but a lot of these puzzles ticked me off. They really should have made them clearer. Not painfully obvious, mind you, just... clearer. Heck, MI2 had difficult puzzles but they were fun to solve!
Simple reasons ^^ First, 3D. Second, average graphics, average modelisation, average texture, average animation. Third, not a single real instrument in music. Fourth, acceptable sound quality only since episode 3. Fifth, episodic format doesn’t fit to pirate-y adventures, which leads to some poor scenario tricks. Sixth, no localization, I can’t share it with my friends. Seventh, it’s not as funny as it used to be, Sam&Max seemed better written, and you haven’t exactly nailed it for Monkey Island.
Most of these cons are due to the episodic format, and I know TellTale is doing their best, that’s why I buy the game, I talk about often, and I’m excited when a new release come, because even if there is some lacks, it still a very good job, a good game, and a pleasure to play. However, you just can’t compare CoMI, Grim Fandango, who appeared to be the destination of what adventure games were going to be, but quality full length adventure games are a dream now.
I hope someday Telltale will have time and money to make a full length game, with real score, with top notch graphics and animation, localization, deep story, no electric shock puzzle (what*?*:P), a game like an artifact every adventure gamer would be proud to quote.
I don’t know if telltale even dream of that, maybe the episodic format is the only way they want to work (besides the economic aspect), but I still hope someday. As I’m still hoping for Shenmue III, as I’m still hoping for a new 2D Broken Sword, as I’m still hoping to see Bernard Bernouilli back, and Many Calavera too.
It's the best. It has just as much replay value if not more than CMI and the story to this game is just as good as the first 3. The humor in my honest opinion is just as good as the first 4. What makes it the best in my eyes is that it nods to all 4 previous games and is a solid conclusion to all the games, it's meant to put them at rest and none of the previous installments would ever be capable of doing that. It develops the characters just that much more, brings out the characters, connects with the fans on a deeper level than before....
All in all, I wouldn't separate it from the other games because it is the other games, just the final stage that has to rap everything up and put it to rest and I think it's well capable of it.
I feel that TMI will put the series to rest, gracefully.
i love TOMI best after SOMI, i like the simple 3d, except that damn suit of stan's, hell that texture thingy was annoying i hope it wasnt a bug
the humour is genious especially in that last episode.
and the episode format works well in this series, as with sam and max, id rather wait one month than2-3 years for a game, the acting and story is ofcourse top class!
it should be the Game of the year! even better than uncharted 2(which i also love )
I voted best in the franchise, but I'm slightly biased--it is, after all, the one I am currently playing, so I'm invested in the experience, while the others are more distant memories.
Plus we must remember that Tales is not complete yet, so it's hard to judge properly.
I think one thing that really works in Tales's favour is the use of more cinematic camera angles. Changing the camera angle can really affect the mood of the scene, and using more close-up shots makes me identify more with Guybrush et al.
I believe that there is a certain nostalgia factor that Tales won't have until it's older. That said; any Monkey Island is good Monkey Island in my opinion.

Sometimes, I think Ron Gilbert would not agree with many of the puzzles and solutions. I honestly don't care that much about puzzle difficulty so long as the solution is clever/funny. Not that TMI doesn't have clever/funny puzzles, there just haven't been many that made me lol like when Guybrush spit on Wally or when ending up back at Stans used shipyard in SoMI had Lechuck uppercutting Stan into the ocean, or Cutthroat Bill choking till he turned purple on a jawbreaker till he spits it up which you then give to Blondebeard who gladly chows down despite the hair all over it.
I like the tales more each passing episode, even if it seems they will break the usual MI cycle. Apart from the old MI humor and difficulty, TGG brought shitload of new elements which I greet with pint of grog. Still, they were true to some old characters and voice actors.
Maybe I regard the series with too blue an eyepair but the previous MI's weren't as interesting as the tales. As long as they have the ultimate MI-fanboy in the cast and original characters, I'd prolly still like it.
Wow at the poll results, has anyone here actually played the older Monkey Island games? Best in the series???
Don't get me wrong, I love the new game and it is really fun to play, has some fantastic comedy moments though may be a slight bit too easy. However I would porbably place it above 4 but not the others.

Yes, I played old games and I choose option 2. It's not THE best, but it's close to LCR's perfection. Here's why:
SMI - Great game and good introduction to the series. Thing I didn't like was wandering around Monkey Island - the whole setup didn't fit mystery surrounding this place, it was just a tropical island. It was a little too short. I still love it and replay it from time to time.
LCR - the best one.
CMI - Didn't like the explanation about ending of LCR. Ending was little rushed (eg. scene with Elaine turning rollercaster controls was cut). Again - a great game, one of the best I've ever played - just doesn't top LCR.
EMI - Here we agree.
Everyone here seem to dislike (too soft a word?) EMI for some reason(s). It was ok in my opinion, and still a part of the story. Those who play Tales as the first MI game might wonder 'what's that "Ultimate Insult" in the voodoo-sword- recipe?'...ye.
3 - Excellent all around, transitioned superfluously from dos gen to windows without alienating traditional point and click gamers. Genius voice casting and previous stories and characters are incorporated seamlessly (including Wally in the game was genius).
1 - Ground setting classic. Humor has it's edge but has aged a little.
2 - Comes in last but is still excellent. I like this game a great deal but I just can't bring myself to put it above the original. Who ever heard of a sequel better than the original?
And that other one I don't consider as being in existence. I'm enjoying Tales but I still wish the locations were more memorable/dynamic with more interaction. I'm replaying 2 and I'm blown away by how many things you can examine in each scene (tomb stones in graveyard, costumes in costume shop etc.
It's not the best, but it's up there, along with my other favorites CMI, SMI and MI2. It's really hard to place ToMI somewhere in between (though it's clearly better than EMI), because it's awesome (so far), but the classic games are just... classic.

Alot of people who don't like it don't post here. It's that simple.

Totally Agree.
BTW, i Need to see "Rise of Pirate God" for giving a final opinion
