So it _is_ the size that matters?

edited November 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
While uninstalling some programs (none of them being of the TOMI episodes :D)
I found out this:

So chapter 4 isn't only impressive because of its quality content but also sizewise compared to its predecessors. I wonder why this is? (Maybe due to all of those "heavy" death scenes?)

Hmmm... my Add/Remove list says that every episode is 1,091 MB.... odd...

No, size does not matter, only in your mind. Judge me by my size do you!? And where you should not!

Wut. I think this is a case of windows fail. I show it at 108mb.
  • edited November 2009
I have each of them at 1,05 GB.

maybe it depends on the kind of install? or if you have vista or xp or somthing. i dunno i dont really know much about comptuers

Well, my Windows 7 skirted around the issue by simply not displaying anything in the size column for ToMI... :D

    I've got:
    Leviathan: 701MB
    Narwhal: 416MB
    Spinner Cay: 416MB
    Trail: 1.03GB

I'm not hurting for space, so I really don't care, but it is odd.

EDIT: This is on Vista FWIW.

    Weird. Everybody's is different.

Due to the solution of this problem that Da_Skorpion has brought to the table, I think the last one is the most accurate.

Programs and Properties section of Vista is known to be quite problematic anyway.

Apparently, Windows is just guessing, and it's not very good at it.

    If not spot on :D
Might be an extracted music file here or there, but not much that will change the size dramatically.

Windows is just trying to make it look bigger.

BTW: Windows stands for "Winslow OS". Van Winslow programmed it all by himself when he was bored one windless afternoon and continues to do so today. Microsoft doesn't actually have anything to do with it, it just exists because people wouldn't trust an OS that has been programmed by a single homebrew developer.

So then the sizes have been slightly increasing each chapter?

Well TTG started to compress the speech less tight because people were complaining the compression was clearly noticeable at times.
Also there is more speech in the later episodes to begin with.
I am still amazed how TTG can cram an episode into less then 400MB though.

I thought it is due to the higher amount of cutscenes in chapter 4, not (only) dialogue. Or because they don't "clean up" the chapters from the previous chapter's stuff - anyone noticed that, when extracting the music from one chapter with the TTG music extractor, a lot of music / sounds from previous episodes is being extracted as well?

The only thing that takes up serious space from the cutscenes are the voices and the sound effects.
The animations themselves take very little. They are not movies (where random things can be shown), just ingame animations.
The sound and the the textures (the 'skin' of things) should together take up about 95% of everything.

I don't know about the lazy cleanup. Didn't notice it, but you may be right.

I have this thing where whenever I play the finale scene in chapter 4, right before and right after the cut scene that starts off the finale, I could hear tidbits of Spinner Cay's theme. I thought it was quite curious.

I did not notice the lazy clean up with the music. It seems to be approximately the same size per episode. The voices I haven't managed to extract so far though. I think the biggest difference is created by extra textures and the dialog. The later episodes seem to have much more of the latter. At least it feels like that. The cut scenes aren't movies, just in game animation with long dialog. So the animation part should not really increase the size that much. The same textures and objects are used as out of cut scenes. Therefor only the dialog in the cut scenes should really add to the amount of megabytes. I hope that didn't sound too nerdy and was in any way at least a bit understandable... :o

Can anyone perhaps point me into the right direction to extract voices?

    Yes, that would be correct.

    Same problem here.

If it is size that matters we can all over compensate with large hard drives....

I might even help out to code it if needed. (Although I do have an other coding project which would get priority) I just really want LeCuck's piraty laugh, several of Murray's lines, and Elaine mentioning her Captain's Quarters :D

'That is the second biggest hard drive I have ever observed.'
