Should I hang onto my EMI original in Box?

edited November 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I'd sale it to buy a Gabriel Knight game which is like about 150 dollars...:p

I don't know how much it's worth yet but these games are becoming ridiculously collectible and expensive.

I hate it... I can't afford to pay like 500-1000 dollars on a computer/ video gaming series, that's ubber retarded. Their games not artifacts from Ancient Rome!:mad::mad::mad:

Anyways do you guys think a original in box EMI will ever be collectible?

Only if it was never opened or touched and hermetically sealed.

Always, always hang on to old video games.

Yeah, I say hold onto your EoMI box.
  • edited November 2009
hold onto it always bring it with you where ever you go..... and remember only the good times and never ever remember Monkey Kombat.

Selling a Monkey Island game is like selling your soul, my friend.
  • edited November 2009
Definitely hold onto it. In a while, video game museums will start popping up, and then you can donate it to them and have your name engraved on a plaque. That's worth more than 1000 big ones.

    Or a million Cold Ones.

i dont have it the box anymore. i brought it to be played and enjoyed. i dont think i would sell it at all tbh. only if i could for like £1000 even tho its considered the worst in the series it still means alot to me

Where on earth is Gabriel Knight going for $150? It's usually $20 or less.

Probably on Amazon, I had to pay 65 or Monkey island and 90 for CMI.

    Proof or it didn't happen.

    ^

Not sure what Gabriel Knight game you mean, but you can find most of them for $20 or less at half. (So long as you don't mind it without the box)

Well, that site is just really cheap. Thanks for sharing. :)

Woot, now I don't have to pay an arm to get curse and Escape for cheaper.
  • edited November 2009
I paid for CMI 10 bucks or so, at the time I had a friend who worked at LucasArts and could get any LEC game for the company store price. :) Still have the whole box.

He's probably including the cost of a new GFX card.

For a old used game Grim Fandango is still ridiculously priced on that site though.

It's a big music company. I'm sure you've heard of it.

Or they could be referring to Escape from Monkey Island, as this is a Monkey Island discussion... :p

I'm keeping my special pre-order box from Grim Fandango, and the little Manny Calavera collapsing figurine inside. But I didn't leave the game (or the figurine) in the box... I wonder if they're still worth anything. Not that I'm looking to get rid of them, mind you.

:| Escape from monkey island? Worth money? Really?

What's Escape from Monkey Island? Is that some fan game or something that comes between CMI and TMI, which is MI4?

Update: I just looked up screenshots, looks like some shoddy piece of experimental 3D work done in 1972.

Update: Just read the summary, reads like something a Twilight lover would come up with after hearing only the names of the main characters and knowing nothing about the story.

    Good thing TMI is MI4

Okay, I found Escape to be the weakest of the bunch, but you're taking it way too far.

While waiting for ToMI Chapter 5, I've replayed all the previous games, including EMI.
Every time I replay it, I found it less and less lame. OK, it's still the worst of them all, and the end is very dissappointing, but I stopped hating Monkey Kombat to just disliking it.

I think this drawing shows quite well how I like the Monkey Island games. It's not on escale, though. EMI should be a bit lower, and its final raising shouldn't be so quick and high. But I hope you get the idea...

Lol, you guys need to stop looking on eBay and just go to a Value Village or some other thrift store. I found The Dig, Space Quest 6, King's Quest 6, Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition (brand new unplayed in box), two Duke expansions (also brand new unplayed in box), and Homeworld GOTY (unplayed, boxed) among others that were actually used all within the $1.99 - $3.99 (CAD) price range each. Some of them were just jewel cases, but still in perfect condition. You can really get lucky in those stores. Usually they're of games that people just never played and finally decided to get rid of them.

I also found Wing Commanders 3 and 4, X-Wing Collector's Edition (though it came with the X-Wing vs Tie Fighter manual which was a tease), and Half-Life GOTY boxed for all the same prices.

You do realize that EMI and ToMI share the same writer? Just checking...
Also I would love to hear some of your real beefs with the writing instead of just jumping on the hate band wagon..

There is a lot of people that say the game is horrible but do not really say why beyond it not being point and click and monkey kombat.... but lets give credit where credit is due.... the game has some great puzzles and the writing is not bad... just a few plot holes but the Much loved MI3 had those as well.

...then the writer has learned from his mistakes he made in EMI. :)

EMI's story had a good start in my opinion but became too abstruse and fantastic towards the end. I like to compare it with Indiana Jones 4, the movie: WHY on earth did Spielberg have to put f***ing ALIENS in there??

I found that references to EMI are noticeably rare in TMI whereas there are a lot of hints at CMI (the whole ring business) and the first two Monkey Island games. There must be a reason for this..

Aliens really aren't that strange in the fantasy/science fiction universe of Indiana Jones. Watch the first three again, and you'll see they're just as crazy.

Honestly, my biggest beefs with the game had to do with Guybrush and Elaine's characters. They were just not the same people from the previous games. That, and the usage of heck instead of hell. (What the heck?=okay. He came from heck=No.) That sorta stuff bugs me, especially how it seemed so inconsistent. Also the story got a little too silly, but that was not as big of a problem for me.

    Oh yeah, and Monkey Kombat.

But otherwise, the game honestly wasn't that bad for me. I first played this game about a month ago mainly because I constantly heard how bad it was. Eventually I maned up and played it. At first I hated it because that's how I was programed to feel from all hate. But as I kept playing I realized that this game was seriously not as bad as I had originally felt. I especially liked the music, and several moments in the game genuinely made me laugh or smile.

I'll say it again. Sure it's the weakest of the bunch, but it's honestly not that bad.

Because it's set in the 50's while the others were in the 1930's. 1930's serials were all about weird occult stuff and the rise of the nazi's, 1950's serials were all about science fiction and the red danger. I prefer the occult biblical stuff, but it baffles me how few people understand the reason for the alien theme.
