Are you an old fan or a new fan?

Interesting - the proportion of forum users that are likely to be new fans brought in by Tales is probably around 10%. That leaves a lot of "old" fans who have been playing MI for years.

I wonder how the old fans / newcomers distribution breaks down across TMI's entire audience?

I think this calls for a new poll!

No lies, I'm new. Never played any MI games before Tales, that's why I felt A LITTLE unfamiliar with some dialogues that mirror old games. Considering how my Vista reacted when I tried to play Sam & Max - Hit the Road, I KNEW I couldn't play those games, so I read the plots of the earlier games from Wiki, thus spoiled and ruined my life.

Did you try to run the game natively or did you use ScummVM?

    ScummVM.

My laptop is, literally, an ass.

I'd recommend a combo of Virtual PC and Scumm VM. Virtual PC is from Microsoft and FREE. I run Win98SE in it and can play just about all of my old games that way. The only caveat is that you need an installation CD for Win98 (or whichever OS you want to install). You "install" it into Virtual PC and it literally acts like a different and separate computer inside of your real one.

someone should make a POLL about which POLL is the best POLL.... Roman Polanski would probably win it. Or the North Pole from Sam and Max

I get it. Running another OS without corrupting all the data and ruining the computer. Sweet. I'll check it out, thanks.

But polls are, in essence, the life blood of any message board...the ability to vote in a poll defines who we are as community members...it brings us together, and allows us to consider each other's opinions in a different light...plus making them is cool because they annoy people like you...lol

Oh and @Irishmile, of course we geezers are awesome! Anyone who has basked in the glory of MI for so long must be awesome, as that glory reflects onto us...so therefore people just starting dont have that much glory...and are not quite as awesome...

If you guys are geezers then I've got one foot in the grave. I started the series back in 1990 as well, on my brand-spankin'-new Commodore Amiga 500 that I got for my highschool graduation present. :o

I was 10 in 1990 and had not yet heard about MI it was two years later when it came out on CD-ROM that I found my way to MI.

That's another nice thing about it, yes. But I originally started using it for the sole purpose of getting old DOS games to work, as they all did back when I really used Win98. It even emulates old pokey video & sound cards.

You can actually play the old LA games without ScummVM on Win98, but ScummVM allows you to get around needing the CD for lots of games. Much easier IMO.

Yeah I can top that...I was 4 in 1990 so I'd not yet heard about computers... :P

Geez, we're sounding like the 4 old guys in that Monty Python skit...

I missed out on the MI games back in the day, my Lucasarts education started in 1993 or so when we got our first brand-spankin'-new cd-rom drive for our pc, and I convinced my dad to buy Day of the Tentacle with it. I didn't play any Monkey Island until the Curse demo in the late 90's, but I didn't end up getting that game until a few years later after Escape had already been released. Finally I decided I needed to play the old Monkey games, and I was fortunate enough to get the Monkey Island Madness cd bundle off the Lucasarts website ($15-- cheap!) before they stopped selling it.

The thing about Monkey Island is that a long, long time ago my uncle actually had Monkey Island 2, but for some god forsaken reason, we couldn't install it on our old computer. I think I was probably 6 around this time. We just gave up entirely and it was beyond me how I recognized it by remembering the artwork alone when I got around to playing it and the rest this year. I think maybe it might have been the name "Guybrush" I recognized since hearing it did ring some bell in my head.

But anyway, on this chatroom I've been attending for eight years now my friends would talk about the Monkey Island series endlessly and it would drive me nuts. Finally, on talk-like-a-pirate-day I tried out the free episode and right when Guybrush got on to Flotsam Island I was like "ok, no, forget this, I'm going to go and play the old ones first" so I did (except I gave up with EMI) and now here I am with a full purchase. Guess that free stuff was a good idea, huh?

    So yeah, I'm new.

Oldie. I was a fan since SMI EGA.
  • edited November 2009
Long time fan. I didn't discover MI until about 8 or 9 years ago, so I'm not one of the oldest fans but I've known the series for quite a long time now.
  • edited November 2009
Old fan - I've been MI-obsessed for like 14 years now, ever since I first played SMI at age 11, that's more than half my life.

i was introduced by my girlfriend over one year ago. i played only comi then. some months later, i played it again and somi and mi2. then, when ep2 came out i started with tomi and played somi:se and comi between the episodes.

    am i new or old?

PS: my girlfriend is an ooold fan, she played it with her brother when she was 7… ok, starting 14 years ago is not the oldest you’ll find here, i know.

It's sad and unusual that I cannot remember the first time I played MI.

I must have been very young though, because by the time CMI came out I was 13 and already a massive fan (having played SMI and LCR). I clearly remember being overjoyed at hearing Guybrush speak for the first time. :D

I myself am extremely new to the series, but I have played monkey island 1.

The SoMI remake was my first MI game, but I'd hardly call myself an old fan. I'm not sure which poll option to pick
  • edited November 2009
I started with Curse when I was eight/nine-ish, I believe (being 14 now), so I'd call myself... old, I suppose. I remember those stray days on those stray years I'd check every Monkey Island site I knew checking for more news about the fabled 'Monkey Island 5'. And that's how I came upon Tales, by checking fansites. ;3 RIGHT during pre-order time. How lucky I am.

Tales introduced me to the series, but I've gone back and played at least one of the older games. (MI 1)
