no herman toothrot?

noticing some recurring characters come back, like stan and the voodoo lady, i know its a long shot, but what about Herman,i know he aint much of a big character,i doubt they will bring him in tales (but you never know in the final chapter) but he's been in all monkey island games (yes even as reference in curse of monkey island at the end, on the roller coaster ride)...i know we last saw him in escape from monkey island, but sadly i didnt finish it, due to a clitch...i got to monkey kombat...then soon as i finished it(finally), i needed one, just one item to smack on Hermans head, to remember something, but i couldnt find it, because that item was supposed to be in the lava pit....but i will go eventually back to play the game again....

on a side note, what other character would you like to see back??

i would love to see wally back

Because he was so severely retconned in EMI, I would not like to see him return. Unless they retcon the retcon, that is.

    Men of Low Moral Fiber.

I mean, damn, they HAVE to appear...

Maybe you were lucky having that bug, right in that point of the game!

Forget them! I want to see all those random ghosts (that didn't look like ghosts) that would walk through you in the middle of Mêlée Island™ then go through those doors that don't go anywhere and yet somehow arrive someplace coz they never come out the other side!

Or how about the judge or librarian from LCR? Eh? Eh?? :D

Pretty much how I feel.. they ruined the character in EMI so badly that I'd have little interest in seeing him again. Perhaps Telltale would be able to bring him back and do it right, but I'm fine if he doesn't appear.

I'm sure this final episode will have at least one more returning character though.

I honestly saw very little appeal to the character in the first place. As far as crazy old hermits go, the guy is kinda low on my list. But yeah, his appearance in Escape was a bit of a sore spot in that game.

Considering that after you hit herman, theres only Like 2 puzzles left, you could just look up a video walkthrough on youtube, or the ending.

I liked Herman, but what EMI did to him kinda eliminated the character for the future.

AGREE. I mean seriously, there was so much of a great chance for it on Flotsam. That's just their type of island.

I would have loved to get the Men of Low Moral Fiber in there, but they never fit.

I suppose H.T. could show up in a future installment if it were organic to the story ... but I don't think Telltale needs to obsessively pack in cameos just because. And after EMI packed in all that baggage around the character ... well, I wouldn't be disappointed if he didn't show up. At this point, I don't consider him a series touchstone on the level of Stan or the Voodoo Lady.

Those guys fit anywhere, it's easy, in Chapter 5 they could of just been sat on some perch:
Guybrush: What are you guys doing here?
    *they look at each other*
    All: Dead.

They could have replaced Bugeye, Moose, and Noogie.

The manatee has a delicate palette when it comes to who it swallows -- only recurring characters will do!

Come to think of it, it'd be pushing it too hard to have Murray AND those guys inside of one spesific manatee.

You might see Largo in the land of the dead, maybe Lechuck killed him due to him letting guybrush escape, you never know

Surely that wouldn't have actually been preferable?

It would have made lots of sense.

I would've thrown the Men of Low Moral Fiber onto Flotsam Island, sitting outside at the end of the pier or something.

I'd say maybe herman's still crazy and has a misplace identity, but Elaine recognizes him at the end of EFMI. Which makes no sense seeing how it's been at least twenty years since he saw her. That had to be the second worst idea for that game, (you all know what was the first .... Monkey Kombat)

If only we'd have gotten more requests like this at the BEGINNING when there were so many what returning characters would you like to see threads, WHEN IT ACTUALLY MATTERED. I think I was one of the only people even mentioning the idea. :(

Yep, EfMI's finale made it difficult to use that character again, which is a pity because I really enjoyed his craziness in the first games. Then again all stories evolve and maybe he will be in some new role in future Monkey games.

Technically she doesn't "recognize" him until she already hears "Grandpa Marley" is in the robot. So maybe she doesn't recognize him so much as believe he's Grandpa Marley because he's the only old guy who comes out. It's not recognition, it's the power of suggestion!

It would have made lots of sense.

Not sure I'd agree with that. While it'd be fun to see them in a cameo, I don't think it would have worked with how much you had to interact with Bugeye, etc down there.

And like someone else mentioned, having them AND Murry show up in the same place would have been pushing it a bit. I don't think we need that many refrences and call backs to the older games, when it becomes a case of including something for the sake of including it.. then you know it's going too far.

Yep, it would have been too pushed and IMO those guys inside Manatee were great as they were. There's no need to include every character from previous games to Tales, when they don't fit to the story and puzzles. Pointless cameos are unnecessary and I rather see new interesting characters.

Herman could probably be retconned-lite by having him get sick of being a governer and miss the life of a hermit. Therefore he decides to go back to being just Herman Toothrot, with not a worry in the world and being able to scratch his behind in public (oops, wrong game).
  • edited December 2009
wow seems like alot of people do care about Herman :)

By the way... have you guys talked about bringing Largo back? What were your thoughts on that?

No, no. Jake was referring to the color count. The Men of Low Moral Fiber have a terribly high color count. There's no way the manatee could eat them! :D

P.S. Go watch The Princess Bride whilst you wait for Ch. 5. ;)

yeah i would love to see Largo back, but he's got to be really mean and really brutal as he was back on scabb island in monkey island 2

As someone who hasn't played EMI, I must ask: What exactly did they do to Herman that you guys hate so much?
  • edited December 2009
I don't really get it. After playing Monkey Island 1: Special Edition I have to say theres a lot of charm with Herman. Then again I haven't...played Escape all the way through yet.

But we've got to have some of that Men of Low Moral Fiber back, and some of that Largo. Mmm hmm. I need some largo and fiber in my diet.

Personally, I sort of found Herman to be a borderline character right from the beginning. He has some funny lines, but the real satisfaction I got was on my second playthrough of SOMI and I could just tell him to leave. He then calls you a jerk, and you feel a little bit better.

I thought the EMI version wasn't that horrible, and who really cares about the retconning? It happens. I think it was a decent twist to the story even if it rewrites the story quite a bit. On the plus side, the voice acting was top-notch, and who didn't love that cut-scene with the sand drawings?-that's one of my favorite scenes in all MI games.

Herman's alright. I liked him very much in SoMI, he has a crazy Ben Gunn from Treasure Island thing going on. Thoroughly enjoyed him, but felt he was kind of a one-time gag. I was indifferent to his MI2 appearance. I actually liked EMI's plot twist involving his forgotten identity, but I don't think we're likely to see his character again. He's doing the boring office work so Elaine and Guybrush can go pirate it up.
