Not that it matters, but...

My personal review of Tales of Monkey Island: Rise of the Pirate God.

10/10.

Once again, Telltale proves their skill with storytelling. Near the beginning of the season, around episode 1 or 2, I had my doubts whether or not they could fully revive MI after it being gone for almost a decade. The puzzles were a bit awkward, the control scheme different. But even though I had to wait a bit longer for this penultimate season finale, it was VERY MUCH SO well worth it.

This episode had me, eyes glued to the screen, heart thumping in my chest, Grog XD (tm) spilling all over my keyboard from minute one. Betrayal! Revenge! Swashbuckling!

Anyway, to wrap this all up Gamespot style:

The good
  • Excellent atmosphere
  • Cleverly written story
  • Puzzles well-balanced and easy to solve
  • Dom and Earl together again just feels right.

The bad
  • Model reuse

I just got an amazingly tingly feeling all through the ending when LeChuck was just beating Guybrush senseless. It was just very potent, very powerful. It was also awesome when LeChuck randomly beats on you as you do the puzzling. I loved the final usage of the ring too. That was excellent.

There isn't anything about it I have a complaint with, so I would give it 10/10 too. You could argue for a flaw here or there, but I loved it all the same. Perfect capstone for the series.

    Exactly!

It was a brilliant end to a great game. No doubt I'll be replaying through all the chapters back to back in the near future. Spread it over a week, probably.

As I played through, I kept walking to Mark's desk and proclaiming his genius. This chapter was possibly my favorite of the series (or I'm just dazzled and need to replay them all) with nonstop laughs. I'm already missing it.

Yay puzzles, and the tone of Dominic's voice as things start to turn for the worse. Things seem quite serious when all chirpy quality fades.

I also found this an extremely poignant chapter. The whole bit with Morgan trying to pump Guybrush up after his first ordeal in the giant reality rip, and he's sitting on the ground while she tries to console him by being lightly insulting... and he says "C'mon Morgan. I just lost my wife." I had a little cry. Yup. I'm serious. I actual had a little tear at that moment. The chemistry between those characters in that scene (and I don't mean sexually, in this case), was just so well-constructed and so devastating and so beautiful. Guybrush has gained a lot of depth as a character for me in this series. We've seen a truly emotional and vulnerable side to him.

    Oh, and

    - I agree entirely. I loved the realistically (and consistently!) strained voice. It was so sad and yet so comical!!

You have a problem with model reuse in this chapter? Yeah, so the thief's been reused, but is heavily modified. And the new characters are the hideous and original Galeb, and the 100% brand new ferryman. Oh, and the stunning skeletons..

It felt abit detached from previous chapters, but I'm not sure if that's a bad thing. Plus the new environments make up for it. And the dog was cute. 10/10.

im surprised u say easy puzzles = good thing, i personally found the reuse of franklin and the hook + chest too simple and lacking in depth. i would give it maybe a 6/10, but clearly im one of the few who didnt like it as much as the other episodes.

Well, what I mean is most of the puzzles are clear and non-illogical. Not necessarily easy, but straightforward. The puzzles that WERE illogical, however, were ridiculous enough to keep you chuckling the whole way through.

I managed to get stuck only one time in this chapter which is far less than in the previous chapters, but boy did I love this one. Superb storytelling and puzzles, WELL DONE TELLTALE!!!

It was fun, I felt the graphics had improved, not sure why. The first half was a bit better if I had to nit pick.
