Excellent game? Yes or no

When tales of monkey island came out, I thought it wasn't going to be that good. It appeared like you had to do this to do that, but lucasarts managed to hide it when they were making the series. But as the game progressed you meet new charcters and the game gets better and better. My favourite character is the pirate hunter and i was really glad she was in the last episode (although i have just started it and i do hope it's a happy ending for cheaphood and LeFlay). Telltale have done a great job. They have definately beaten expectations and maybe i would go as far as to say better than lucasarts! I mean lucasarts was funny but telltale is just great. It's in a league of it's own. Now i don't mind if lucasarts or telltale make monkey island but telltale have definately given us legendary characters and i would like them to make a second season. put sam and max on hold again :-P

who's your favourite character?

thanks

De Singe, then Morgan. Guybrush doesn't need to be said cause that's automatic.

i don't really like the new guybrush if i'm honest. i'm used to him but not fond. de singe, i could barely stand at the start, now i just laugh at his accent.:D

Honestly I'm a bit dissapointed at the re-use of mechanics and scenery(and character models, I swear D'oro's "skin" was being used for a char in the last tale)throughout the game, puzzles included. Although I loved being able to play Monkey Island again, as the episodes went on I found myself more and more dissapointed as they came out.(Minus the voice acting and cut scenes which were great!).

As someone who's been playing adventure games for awhile, it just felt way to easy, and as the episodes went on it felt like less and less effort was being put into them.(I'm sure that's not the case, but being able to get through each one in a few hours and seeing the puzzles repeat etc, just sorta made it feel that way.)

as a note I think this would have much better been released as a full game versus episodes, as it felt like I was playing a a chapter then waiting a month on the load screen for the next.(basically what it was I guess lol )

Edit: being half asleep the title confused me a bitOo, as far as favorite characters Guybrush is a given(as long as he keeps the same voice actor=p ) I did like Morgan as well as far as "new" characters.

i agree episodes are too short, but as a complete game, it's big! also i think telltale games are rather the same game but with different themes, which to be honest i don't mind, considering they're the only company to make adventure games.

I literally hate Elaine now, and it's a hard thing for someone who played the first Monkey Island I say.

    Though, loved the dress.

    thanks

:) But the guys making this made Monkey 1-4. Well, a good chunk of them, anyways.

What? Why? She completely redeems herself, and kicks a fair amount of ass, in chapters 4 + 5.

true, but they are on a budget so it's harder for them, i mean if they were as big as ea, then they could create new game engines every month.

maybe they should do what rockstar do. wait a couple of years then release such an immense game that you would play it non stop until the next game is release couple of years later. although i don't see how that would be possible for adventure games lol

I never really liked her much in the first two games. Gah, I hated that dress! Sooooooooo goth and creepy. And yet, I liked it.

i think she's always been an average character. in this series, morgan has been through all the action so i think they made her more important. elaine was crazy, that's not like her

Must be because of the mugshot. I just loved it.

I have a thing for it I guess. I don't like goths, but dunno... My love for Ophelia in Brutal Legend went into an astronomic degree after I see her goth form, for another example.

I don't think the death was part of the master plan, it was just something she had to accommodate for.

As for sacrificing herself to become LeChuck's demon bride...

    1. It lured LeChuck into a false sense of security.
    2. It gave her a chance to get to the Cutlass.
    3. It left Guybrush absolutely no alternative but to find his body, which he needed.

As for not telling Guybrush about it and letting him think he had lost her...you want her to explain her plan to take down LeChuck when the guy is standing right there?

It was a gambit, to be sure, but if anything, it was a display of trust in her husband.

    1. It could be possible that root beer had the power of terminating Guybrush's spirit completely.
    2. After that, she wouldn't have any other way to be rescued.
    3. Then? LeChuck wins. End of the franchise.

Really? I found her to be more menacing than LeChuck. If she had been chasing me around I would have had a heart attack and died. Happy. :o

don't ever finish the franchise. i don't care if we never find out the secret, just don't end the game. it's a cool game

i can't belive guybrush has the highest rating. is it all the guybrush models or this particular one because i really don't like this model

She's lived in the voodoo-filled Caribbean long enough to probably have a better handle on how the root beer works than we do. :P

Based on the exposition in this chapter, my theory is that all the root beer has ever done is send people back to the crossroads. This was effective against LeChuck and his crew in SMI because they had no open portals, and LeChuck was unable to open a new one, hence having to be resurrected by Largo.

I think Voodoo Lady has a spell or something to back her up, at least makes her able to pick up matter.
  • edited December 2009
th voodoo lady has always been in the background, but now she seems to be plotting. that's...unnexpected
  • edited December 2009
To be honest I've always found her as a plot generator. I mean, in order to defeat LeChuck, Guybrush always needed information and items about voodoo, to balance out the power between LeChuck and him. LeChuck was working on voodoo for years, and someone like a helping voodoo lady was needed for Guybrush to stay competitive. Her role in Tales is a nice -and a little expected- touch on the character, at least she now has more of a storyline to offer.
  • edited December 2009
true, but i rather found the voodoo lady just conveniently placed throughout all the games, almost too conveniently. i found her to be like murray and toothrot, just characters, but yes i tink she was expected.

Tales of Monkey Island will be up there with the first 3 before the major downer of EMI.

I have not yet finished EMI but will start tonight because I need my Monkey Island fix NOW! lol

    Bravo season 1:cool:
  • edited December 2009
don't say that, i loved EMI. i'm finding the 1st MI rather difficult because it's old and the remake is just higher graphics. but the fourth was great, not tried the second, and yes i agree the 3rd is great too.

    Where is Winslow?

    This must be corrected:

    :winslow: :winslow: :winslow:

For me it was 'brush, Mo', 'Chuck, and 'slow.

MURRAY!!! Ahem, then Guybrush(given), Winslow(though I still hate how many times they recycled his type of model for other characters), sometimes morgan (before she became a emo git), they destroyed Elaine (morgan was more of what I thought Elaine should have been), they made LeChuck weak, the mer-people didn't feel like individual characters to me cause of the mass reuse of models so I disregard them.

The rest of the characters I barely even remember. Maybe the pirate that made unicorns, he was amusing.

yeah, i suppose i am missing out characters, i don't think i can edit the poll, anyway, telltale isn't really that big of a company, on a budget, or very influential in the games industry. they have been using the same graphics engine since 2004 ea for example has several and always updating. unreal is so big, alot of companies are using it, splinter cell conviction (coming out sometime 2010) is still using a heavily modified version of unreal engine 2.5 even though v3 was out in 2007. telltale is just moving along. to be honest, we're only a handful of adventure gamers who are fortunate to have a dedicated company, they're trying their best, i don't think mass re-use should affect the individuals enjoyment.:)

Just imagine if telltale games used unreal engine 3 to make their games. it would be so realistic, it's be great. considering ut3 is modable, people could (re)create telltalegames in high graphics. although i don't know if the engine is only limited to shooters

why is Merfolk in this poll? They were in two chapters. I like Guybrush cause he's Guybrush and the Main character. But for New Characters I'm going with Morgan. Her character was interesting, I felt sorry for her because she was very conflicted, and although she doesn't take the place of Elaine, I thought she was a good friend. If there's a season Two I hope she returns, as an ally of Guybrush. I'm not going say tales is my favorite monkey island cause I really don't have a favorite. I thought it was on the same level as the other MI games (except for EFMI). I enjoyed Winslow too, he was a good crewmember and a little amusing.
