Why come no Monkey Island?

edited December 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I just realized that this is the first Monkey Island game that has nothing to do with the actual island at all!! While in the second game we didn't go to Monkey Island, Dinky Island is a small atoll off the coast of Monkey Island, connected by a series of tunnels, so it's kind of sort of connected to MI.

Not that I'm complaining about the story, which was great, but I was really hoping to see a fully 3D Monkey Island. So...

MI2 was retconned into having Monkey Island by CMI, at no point in MI2 itself did it ever say we were on Monkey Island.

there was no metal gear in metal gear solid 3 no zelda in links awakening and the real mortal kombat tournment was only in the first game

Monkey Island is just the name of the series. If they had called it "The Secret of Guybrush Threepwood", then there wouldn't be this discussion.

It's like Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It probably got canned because Terminator is more about John Connor, but they were stuck with the name.

I think you're right. Dinky Island's (or was it Inky?) tunnels only connected Dinky and Melee and for some reason in CMI they said you could also go to Monkey Island.
Also, there is a tunnel that leads from Melee to Blood Island if you trust the CMI easter egg, and Guybrush can also WALK on the sea bottom from Blood to an ALTERNATE PAST of Melee, seeing himself drown.

So yeah, this leaves us with the theory that you can actually walk from Blood to Melee (past and present) and from there to Dinky and Monkey Island. That's what I call a network.

No one said that MI2 went to Monkey Island. He said Dinky was a small island just in the outskirts of Monkey Island. Which is true.

    Edit:

"In Curse of Monkey Island it is revealed that Dinky is in fact a small atoll off the coast of Monkey Island which led to some inconsistencies with earlier games. However, Dinky is also shown to be off the coast of Lucre Island in the in-game map of Escape from Monkey Island." - Quoted from http://www.miwiki.net/Dinky_Island

Yep, and this isn't even mentioned in MI2 itself, you only find out in CMI that they were supposedly connected.

True as of CMI, in MI2 it was never revealed that this was the case, and hence until CMI was released it appeared that MI2 had no connection to Monkey Island whatsoever.

Well in MI 2 at the very end you were in the Carnival of the damned. isnt that on Monkey island? Seeing as how you go there again in the third one? So isnt Monkey Island in MI 2?

oooooookkkkkkkaaaaayyyyyyy....... do you not consider MI 3 part of the series then? just because Ron Gilbert didn't create it doesnt mean its not the truth. someone had to continue the story and the creators of Curse decided to have the Carnival of the Damned on monkey island. so therefore you were on Monkey Island at the very end of MI 2.

But the point was, we do not visit it in Monkey Island 2 ;) We only find out it was Monkey Island in the next game, no point in MI2 does it say Dinky Island is near Monkey Island or that we walk on Monkey Island at the end.

I think the reason we didn't go to Monkey Island is because Curse, and especially Escape, have removed all fun things from the island. Curse removed the cannibals, Escape removed Herman Toothrot, the Monkey Head, and the Caverns of Meat.

Ah, but TSCC had plenty of Sarah Connor AND Terminators. So there. :D

Monkey Island's great 'n' all, but after the initial wanderings, the cannibals, the talking monkeys, the hell under the monkey-head, the amusement park, etc. We kinda run out of things to do on a relatively small, deserted island.

Sure, it'd be nice to see MI in ToMI standards, and not butchered like in EfMI. But given fans pretty much crucified EfMI's attempts to spice the island up, I feel it was a good call not to include Monkey Island in ToMI.... unless the unnamed island with the seagull was Monkey Island, which I hope it was just so we can say (sort of) that we've been to Monkey Island in every game.

You are blending two arguments here. The point is that MI2 was written without including Monkey Island at all, thus negating the argument that a Monkey Island game somehow has to include the actual island.

I see your point. Though when I think of the title "Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck's Revenge", it does kinda say that, while it's part of the Monkey Island series, it's got nothing to do with Monkey Island, unlike The secret of Monkey Island, Curse of Monkey Island, and Escape from Monkey Island. Tales of Monkey Island kinda promises that the story will have something to do with Monkey Island, while in the end, there isn't.

However, excluding the second game, each game involves a secret, a curse, and escaping Monkey Island:

    awellthoughtouttable.png

Therefore, the titles of the games might not have any connections to the game. Or is there?...

Mind you, this is not an actual argument. I just get a kick out of pointing out pointless details, Heh.

I missed Monkey Island too and I feel it breaks a tradition. They just could have made the place with the rift the same underground cavern where LeChuck's ghost ship was in MI1, that would have been enough.

Actually, when I played MI2, I immediately thought that 'Dinky Island' was just a corruption of 'Monkey Island' from the many rumours about Big Whoop. When I saw Toothrot there, I took it as proof, but was afterwards confused to learn that it wasn't Monkey Island...

According to the crackpot "it's a kid in a carnival" theory, every place he ever goes is "Monkey Island" since it's all just an attraction in a theme park.

(Warning: Believing the above is known to cause delusional ranting about how amazing the third game that "has yet to be made" would supposedly be based on hearsay from the guy who wrote the first two games)

I'm tired of Monkey Island. I'm kind of glad we didn't go there. If we allways get the same plot, characters and villains, things get really stale. "Elaine gets in trouble, Guybrush makes a powerfull Voodoo thingy, we meet Herman, Murray, the Voodoo Lady and Stan, there's a minor villain and things end up on Monkey island with a huge bang... "
I think the writers needed to break that mold and make the game they want. I mean, look at EMI. It had so much old elements. TOMI turned out somewhere between EMI and something really really fresh and that works great. So new things are not so bad.

Haha!! I knew it! Maybe it was the island with the dead Seagul and LeChuck's treasure chest! Or... maybe the manatee mating grounds are near the coast of monkey island (wouldn't that be funny, Guybrush had all this trouble to find the place and get there and turns out he's already been there several times... :p)

Are you just teasing, Sean? So you can sit back and laugh at the pages of fevered, fantastical rantings spawned by your seemingly innocuous comment?

    That would be cruel.

Maybe Monkey Island gets submerged underwater during the season the game takes place, except for a small tip at the very top that sticks out. The Rock of Gelato was really Monkey Island.

I can accept that there is no Monkey Island in this series since I consider Tales of Monkey Island more of a spin off. I think of it in the same way I look at all the Legend of Zelda games where there has been no Zelda (quick eg. Majora's Mask.)

Besides, remember what Guybrush said in the last episode here. Secret's are meant to remain a secret.

I agree with those who say that he wanted to see Monkey Island.
    The fact is this:
All titles were always consistent with the story that was told.
The Secret Of Monkey Island - The secret is there.
    LeChuck's Revenge - Revenge There.
The Curse of Monkey Island - Curse there. And on Monkey Island.
Escape From Monkey Island - You must escape from monkey island
    NOW

    Tales of Monkey Island
Ok, the "tales" are there. But they're not "of Monkey Island" as an island. It seems inconsistent.

No, I meant that the phrase "Monkey Island" in the title wasn't part of the sentence. It just tells us that there's a revenge, there's LeChuck, and the series is Monkey Island. But nothing specific on Monkey Island.

Now, if it was "Revenge of LeChuck on Monkey Island", that would imply that the game has something to do with the island itself, and not just in the same series.

If you are referring to the belt buckle in Episode 5, then I believe that was in the Flotsam forest, although it also could have been in the Spoon isle jungle.

It was not Monkey Island, I'm afraid.

In MI2 you actually went to monkey island, kind of, as Lechucks fortress is located just off the coast of monkey island. This was mentioned “in game” in MI2.

I’m also a bit disappointed with no monkey island in Tales. Especially since they had a great opportunity to pull it off:
<SPOILER> why couldn’t Lechuck`s hideout in EP5 actually be his old Monkey Island lava cave hideout from SOMI? That would have been a perfect place for the final battle on the ship, and it would have been a nice throwback to the old games! <SPOILER END>

You can't be sure, though. Especially given all the jungles look the same in this game (or am I being junglist, saying that?!)

"monkey island" is only in the title because it's a sequel. seriously...

how lame and unoriginal would it be if we went back to the same island in every game?
Just look at what they did to monkey island in MI3 (or, from what I've heard, in MI4)

The only reason to go back to monkey island would be to reveal the secret, which only Ron Gilbert knows.
