Monkey Island or Bust!
Is anyone else disappointed that in TMI, we never actually WENT to Monkey Island? Other than that, it's one of my favorite games in the series.
(And yes, I know in "LeChuck's Revenge", we didn't technically go to MI, but Dinky Island was connected to MI by the tunnels, so it's pretty close.)

I know even the name is Monkey Island and all but...
But Other than that it doesnt really matter... and it does keep continuity...
There is nothing left on the Island that made it interesting in the first game, all the identity it had is now gone, faded memories of the past leaving just a huge Island of nothing. The Underworld of Hell and the Catacombs have vanished and were written out in Escape, no, there is no point in going there. LeChuck only sent Guybrush there so he couldn't escape, but Guybrush has got off the Island multiple times.
Why do you think Monkey Island is empty nowadays? All kinds of stuff could have appeared in there. For example, did SMI have lava rollercoasters or Church of LeChuck? Answer is no, they did not.
And since people say a lot of time has passed since EFMI and as the beginning of the Screaming Narwhal shows there have been some great adventures in between, it would be very, very unlikely that Monkey Island would be "empty".
Who knows what LeChuck could have done or created in Monkey Island (maybe its full of Killer Walruses). And it would be easy to come up with a reason for Guybrush to go to Monkey Island, even if it turned out to be empty (which I seriously doubt).
Assuming there are future installments in the series, would you like to see a return to MI (maybe Return to Monkey Island?!)? From past experience, it's obviously a nexus of voodoo and ancient monkey rituals. I half-expected one of the fissures in the crossroads to lead there.
"What!? The Giant Monkey Head, but I though.."
"It's returned!"
"but ho.."
"Voodoo spirits Guybrush, they work in Mysterious Ways"
"But..."
"I sense the Catacombs have also returned as they only appear once every Ten Years"
"..Oh that's very Flying Dutchman!"
"GO GUYBRUSH, WE MUST RETURN TO MONKEY ISLAND BEFORE THE MUSHROOMS OF HELLS REVIVE LeCHUCK!"
There you go! Problem solved! Lets go to Monkey Islaaaand!!!
I said part, not main point. Certainly the game should not be dictated by the title. I agree.
True. But it isnt. It is called Tales of Monkey Island and thus Monkey Island plays a significant role in the series.
YES
And saying that the island is empty/overdone/whatever is pointless. It's Monkey Island. ANYTHING is possible.
Including, but not limited to:
-Vanished
-Destroyed
-Nothing at all
(I vote: Nothing at all, I prefer NEW things, there's enough fan service in ToMI already)
But in gaming anything can happen like
-A Recap/Flashback (to show some important plot point)
-Going back in time (through Voodoo, not a DeLorean!)
-A Reset of sorts (like: "somehow the island begins to recover", "a mysterious emanation of mystical voodoo restored the island to it's former glory")
Here's a thought: Maybe a puzzle requires Guybrush to get back to the island and, do something (in the past) the allows SoMI or another game to happen (like putting an item or maybe triggering an event)
Technically, by music and construction, the Crossroads have some sort of relation to the Dinky Island tunnels. The music in the Crossroads is very VERY eerily similar to the music in the Dinky Island tunnels. Probably a coincidence, but I think they're connected.
I would love this. Time travelly stuff like this is awesome.
Think up the chest in Chapter 5 is located on Monkey Island if you crave for MI to be in the game. No-one ever told you otherwise... DONE!
Did it make you like the game so so SO much more now you know where that was?
Heh ... great idea! I'd just assumed that screen was somewhere on Flotsam Island, but hey -- Monkey Island works, too!
LCR: Like others said, Monkey Island was retconned to the game in CMI. Dinky Island and the tunnels had different feel than the Monkey Island of the first game.
CMI: The Carnival of the Damned was worst part of the game. Other islands were a lot more amusing.
EMI: Monkey Island was relatively all right (except that Monkey Kombat stuff and giant robot), but less amusing than in the first game.
I don't miss Monkey Island, although if they can come up with something which fits to plot, then I have nothing against visiting there. But the proble is that Herman and the Cannibals are gone (and so are the monkeys, which is actually a good thing. Because I don't want to see more Monkey Kombat). Rasputin (who was kind of amusing) may still be there. So we have empty village, empty hermit's shed and hole on the ground where giant monkey head used to be. That doesn't sound very amusing.
OMG! stop saying that. I have to double this comment.
You could make Monkey Island playable by heavily retconning the story or by inventing some incredibly cunning plot twist, but IMO the Monkey Island just isn't the same without Monkey Head and Herman. And it would take pretty cunning writing to explain why they are in Monkey Island again. So, I rather see new interesting locations like Crossroads.
I always assumed that some heritage committee or other would have put it back more or less immediately. Stan might even be running the gift shop.
Or a Donkey head. That'd be awesome.
Guybrush finds a telescope on top of the Vulcan and looks through it...
Guybrush: "Oh! I can see another Island!... there seems to be a Rollercoaster and some giant Robot... kind of familiar... weird..."
I mean, Ocarina of Time only had Zelda as the one who supposedly got kidnapped. Majora's Mask didn't even have Zelda, other than in the intro. Hell, the Oracle games really don't involve any Zelda action at all.
Minish Cap had Zelda. It was quite awesome and all.
