I like the Tales name, and wouldn't be too fussed if they simply called it Tales: Season 2, or some sort of subtitle. But all the games have had different names, so I really think they should continue the trend and call it 'The -something- of Monkey Island'.
This already happened in another thread. Can't be bothered to look it up
I think the general consensus was, indeed, Return to Monkey Island. Which is, of course, the best possible title the next season could ever possibly had, and since I came up with it first, I claim my 2% royalties.
I hit 'em with "Return" on comment #35. Presumably the idea is now out there in the ether and randomly popping up in all kinds of people's heads. Won't be long before somebody high up at TTG says "hey, I've just had this great title idea!"
Either have a different name altogether, or keep the Tales of Monkey Island: Arbitrary Subtitle format, but don't say Tales 2. Monkey Island 6 if anything, but I liked that Curse and Escape dropped obligatory numbering. No need to pick it up again.
You know, the title Tales of Monkey Island doesn't really say anything about the plot, like the other games do. In the Secret of Monkey Island, you go on a journey to find Monkey Island and its secret (well, you manage one of the two). In MI2: LeChuck's Revenge, a big part of the plot lies on LeChuck wanting to get revenge. In Curse of Monkey Island, you give a cursed engagement ring to Elaine (well that turned out to be a golden moment). In Escape, well, you end up having to Escape from Monkey Island.
I Tales you end up.... er... uhm... hmmm. Yup. Something's not right here. So Telltale, did you choose that title because it sounded cool? Or was it perhaps because it was supposed to, you know, have more than one season and you thought it would be a good idea to collect all the episodic Monkey Island stories under one banner?
Not "Tales of Monkey Island 2", because I don't want Telltale to make it (not up to me though of course ). They made a good game but I'm not crazy about the episodic thing. I want a "real" big adventure game that takes like 6 months to get through on the first play because it's so insanely hard and long (they can put in the wussy mode like MI2 and 3 have). I also want lovely, detailed, 2D graphics.

I like Episodic. It gives you the option to play them individually, or essentially together. If you wait until post release (or the DVD), you can play them together as one game. But i agree with you on the difficulty front. I would love to have difficulty settings (a la curse), with current difficulty being the basic.

Not to sound rude, but "Return to Monkey Island" is far from an original idea for the title. A quick Google search brought me over to the fanfiction page of the LucasArts Fiction page hosted at Mixnmojo.com which credits the title as of Sept. 2002 (less than 2 full years after the release of Escape) to one "Brandon Ghislain".
Searching a little deeper would likely reveal some prior reference made earlier even than that.
Again, not trying to sound rude, but unless you're Brandon (and perhaps even if you are) then I think it's a bit obtuse to think that you personally have influenced everyone else to think this is a good idea for a new title...
However, it's certainly reasonable to say that there are those who would not have encountered it prior to your post and you may thereby have influenced some, but I highly doubt that it's a majority by any means.

It's still not the same as one big game in which you can travel between many more locations and have a greater number of puzzles to work on at once. It makes the gameplay so much more "epic". Also TT doesn't do the lovely, detailed, 2D graphics. (Their graphics are good though, not putting them down.)

What this man said. Personally I don't think anything mentioned in this thread is better then Tales of Monkey Island season 2. When you think of it, each episode is a small tale on it's own. A new title would have made sense if there was a reason for having it but we don't know where they're going to take the story from here.
Personally I'd really like to see a Stan game at some point in the series.
I really like "Return to Monkey Island". First of all because it alludes to Planet of the Apes series where there was Escape from... just before Return to...
Second, I think they should make a plot related to Monkey Island because it was completely absent in Tales to the point of asking yourself why it is called "of Monkey Island". So there could be a part where Guybrush has to sail to Monkey Island once more in order to find something (or rescue someone), or maybe it would just be a cutscene, but they MUST make the Island appear in-game, and hence, the next title.
I don't know, I kinda like Tales of Monkey Island as a title, it just allows more room for more tales. LIke for the collector's box disc, I feel like it'd be call "Tales of Monkey Island: The Pox of Lechuck" or something like that, and the second season will be "Tales of Monkey Island: [insert plot here]" but that's just me.

If that's true, then they should've just called it "Monkey Island 5: the Pox of LeChuck". Because imo this sounds like Narnia movie titles: The Chronicles of this: The that of that this that. Too long.

I hope you realize that the reason the movies were called that is because that's what the books were called.
Not that I care all that much. I never saw the movies, and I haven't read the books since I was a kid.

Theres not all that much difference in the number of locations for example, in chapter 5, i can count 10, whereas in Curse i can count 12 on plunder island (essentially a chapter). As for the greater number of puzzles, the puzzles in MI games were pretty much self contained in the individual chapters, like in tales. And there were times where you could do multiple puzzles at once (such as the 3 piratey news stories in ch1). Admitadly, not as many as in other MI games, but thats not a flaw in the episodic model, just the direction TTG went with the game.
But i agree that 2D graphics would be awesome, but it's not just TTG that are staying away from them these days. Most devs are.
I hope you realize that the reason the movies were called that is because that's what the books were called.
I just brought this up as an example. Maybe long titles are awesome, but seeing as Monkey Island series tend(ed) to go with "... of/from Monkey Island", there is the whole idea. In that word. "The Pox over Monkey Island" would've been a top-up.

Am I the only one to find LA's remake of Secret terrible? Backgrounds are (almost) nice, but the inconsistencies, oh the inconsistencies... Straight from Guybrush's legs to wrong color schemes.
If TTG releases a 2D quest, I just hope it wouldn't as come out ugly as this. Other than that: hand-painted CMI-style drawings and count me in for hardcore fandom.

Oh, I agree with you on that point. I absolutely think that re-using "Tales" and adding a subtitle would be a horrible route to go for this series. It's worked for other things, but Monkey Island already has an established paradigm for its game titles and changing that would just feel awkward.

No, you're not the only one, but you're in the minority and I can't say I relate. I thought it was great, but everyone's entitled to their own opinions.
That said, I think it would be a mistake for Telltale to move into 2D territory.

People want everything in 3D today. The result it gave on EMI 10 years ago was terrible. Sure, that was 10 years ago, since then TTG made a giant step into improvement when they designed their characters. And they do look great, I can't argue with that.
Though somewhere deep within, I'm still fond of those drawings CMI-style, by Steve Purcell or some other guy. They looked great no matter what graphics card you had and the best thing about them was their movie animation.
In short, if TTG releases a quest CMI-style, personally I'd be glad. If it's like Secret, then I'd prefer the game to be in 3D instead.

Guess I'm that "classics should stay classic" kinda guy
I suppose the way I feel about it is that Telltale has proven to be amazing at 3D episodic adventure games, and while I don't necessarily think that that's the only thing they would be good at, I also feel like people are getting ahead of themselves in thinking that a full-length 2D game would be done as well. If Telltale were to try it, I would absolutely have high hopes, but at the same time, I'm not sure I want them to try it. From what I understand, 2D animation is more difficult and expensive than 3D animation these days. Also, Telltale has a relatively small staff, which is why we only see one game at a time from them. I suppose what I'm saying is that with their smaller staff, the episodic format is a really good fit for Telltale, and until the company gets a bit bigger, I doubt we're likely to see anything other than 3D episodic adventure games from them.
The German version of "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" was called "Rückkehr zum Planet der Affen", i.e. "Return to the Planet of the Apes"... could that be it?
Actually, it seems to me that 2D is enjoying a minor comeback. Especially if they're drawn in a way that it looks retro. Look at Mega Man 9 and 10, drawn in 8-bit NES style graphics. And Braid, not sure how much of that is 2D, but it looks astonishing and is very popular. 2D-style gameplay itself is making a comeback, with more and more successfull downloadable games offered on PSN/XBLA and Wiiware. People don't just want 3D anymore, they want good gameplay. We've already gotten so far that almost nothing really amazes us anymore when it comes to graphics and sound. So it seems that people want smaller games as well, not just big spectacular epics.
Of course, 2D is more expensive to create since it takes longer and I believe TellTale needs to be as cost efficient as possible.

Well, maybe I shouldn't have said "TTG". I see your point there, you are right about 3D episodes.
But there used to be a whole bunch of MI fan games around, even like 3 years ago. I remember there was this really nice done one called "Picaroon", or something like that. The guys who were designing it did a great job on practically restoring the whole drawing and animation style from Curse, and they had a demo available that you could play also (if you google "Monkey Island fan games" I'm sure you'll bump into it, unless their webside is gone). They even made a plot where Guybrush is swallowed by a whale - tell me if that reminds you of something... lol
I guess you're right about 3D games, and I have nothing against them. But if you make it two-dimensional, pencil drawing and cartoon animation style would probably be the best thing to go with.
