How did Guybrush get his name?

edited January 2010 in Tales of Monkey Island
Maybe some of you who have been fans of MI for a long time know the answer to this. But being a newcomer to the series (heard of it through TT) I was rather taken aback by the strangeness of his name. True, it grows on you, but my initial reaction was something like, "Seriously? How are you supposed to take a name like Guybrush Threepwood seriously?" And then I played the game and realized you're not!

But I'm still curious, does anyone know how they came up with it? I've never heard of anything at all like it.

From my understanding, Guybrush's sprite from the first game was named "guy.brush", and out of naming laziness, it stuck. Threepwood was Grossman's cousin's DnD character's last name, which he took from a series of novels that I currently don't remember the name to.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Stemmle says we can blame the origin of Ulysses on literary pretentiousness, an undying love for Star Trek, and his penchant for stupid acronyms.

I need to stop screencapping posts because it makes me feel like a creeper.

    Wrong.

And for those who don't trust Wikipedia blindly, sauce.

Also, the way I heard the story it was Grossman's character, not his cousin's.

Um, he's not wrong. Guybrush's sprite name was guy.brush.

READ THE LINKS. READ WHAT THEY POINT TO. READ ALL OF IT.

Then tell me I'm wrong. And I'll laugh at you.

    Learn what you're talking about.

Noting of course that if you were to actually follow the links you would see that Dave corrected me for citing the same info...:p

@haydenpanettiere: Somebody doesn't ever been so far even as to actually know their memes.

Okay, I read the second link. You shouldn't have posted two links contradicting each other. lol

They don't contradict each other if you actually read them. They both say "guybrush.bbm".

Hahaha I like where this is going, I honestly do.

Someone needs explaining where LeChuck and Elaine names come from?

Well, "chuck" is slang for spew. French vomit?
  • edited January 2010
    lol nope, it's different.

I heard either Gilbert of Schafer wanted a "Chuck" to be in the game. It was someone's cousin. So they stuck "Le" in front, to make it sound Gulf of Mexico Cajun-y kinda, and then LeChuck was born.

As per Elaine I think it was someone's first love.

Where did the surname Marley come from, then? That one might'n't've originated from anywhere actually.
  • edited January 2010
    Who invented reggae? =)
  • edited January 2010
A-ha! Yes, and there's a lot of reggae music in the MI soundtracks, so I 'd say that's the answer.

From what I heard, her name was only Governor Marley until before the option to say "Elaine!" when you reach the wedding was added, which was a reference to The Graduate.
  • edited January 2010
So does that mean that "LeChuck" may be tied to Chuck the Plant somehow?

Also, the movie was called "The Graduate". I'd forgotten that Mrs. Robinson's daughter was named Elaine. And I could've sworn that there was a famous pirate named "Marley", but if you try and do a search on it, it's pretty much impossible to find one whose name isn't either "Elaine" or "H.T."

Absolutely. They were crazy for putting "Сhuck" into every game, though in the final version in only appeared in DOTT.

I totally read that post, I just forgot the circumstances behind it so I posted what I remembered. So, whatever.

But I'm pretty damn sure it was his cousins, but I can't source stuff right now.

I always thought LeChuck was more of a joke, as it's not something piratey, like 'Captain Mutiny of the Thirteenth Red Beard' Instead, it's 'LeName'

I thought the "le" was a reference to the pirates Jean LaFitte and François l'Olonnais.

that still leaves the question: why the HECK did Purcell add "Brush" to the end of the filename

Probably to point out it was a brush file? I'm sure there were plenty of graphic files to go through, and having it in the name made it easier to find.
  • edited January 2010
I think the brush was added automatically, as an extention. But at the timke extentions could only be three characters long, so if you have a file named aap, it saves it as aapbrush.bbm.
  • edited January 2010
Uhm, if you read the links, it explicitely says that Purcell added brush.
  • edited January 2010
I'm surprised that we're at the end of page 2 and nobody's quoted Grossman instead of pointing at links.
Mostly true, but Wikipedia actually gets the details slightly wrong. For the obsessively detail-oriented among you: The DPaint extension for brush files was .bbm (remember that file extensions could only be three letters in those days). The file was named guybrush.bbm, but the "brush" was included by Steve Purcell, who did the drawing, rather than by DPaint itself.

Maybe it's that smiling pirate skull on his belt, but I trust him. If he says Purcell did it, then Purcell did it.
  • edited January 2010
It's fairly easy, in fact. Imagine you take a sheet of paper draw a dude on it with a pencil, and then scan it. What would you name the file? "dudescan.bmp". Now imagine you do another sketch in MS Paint, but wish to leave both the original scan and the Paint rework. So you save the file into the same directory, but instead, call it "dudepaint.bmp"

    Henceforth, "guybrush.bbm" was born.

@Giant Tope: No hard feelings man. I was just being silly. Then Secret Fawful went and made me all serious by calling me a liar when Dave personally corrected me on this. Sorry if I kind of made a jerk of myself there. But you know...Dave Grossman personally corrects you, and I'm sure you'd get defensive too. :D

@Remolay: The "brush" portion was to indicate it was a brush file. Wikipedia will tell you all about Deluxe Paint. Of course they do get things wrong from time to time...

I'm pretty sure that LeChuck was at least partially a reference to Chuck the Plant.

Of course the ending of MI2 might suggest it was also a reference to Chuckie, but that's just my opinion I haven't heard that supported elsewhere.

I apologize. I shouldn't have called you a liar. When I could have called you SUPERLIAR, Pinocchio. You can hide your big nose with a long fluffy sock but we all know what's going on under there.
