What was your favorite Tales of Monkey island episode, and why?

That's it. MussKatt wants to know, now that the dust settled, what was your favorite episode in the Tales of Monkey Island series.

Mine was without a doubt, Lair of the Liviathan. The reason is the style, ambience, music and of course Murray. Murray is my favorite caracter in this series , and was one of the reasons i like Monkey Island 3, and remembered it to this day. Awesome caracter:)

Trial and Execution, for sure. I loved the atmosphere of Flotsam Island at night, I loved the folding map idea (obviously), I loved Morgan's character development, and I love to hate the cliffhanger ending, which was the spark that got me to start posting here.

I agree that episode 4 was great too! In fact, in order of preference i'd have to say that my fave are 3-5-4-2-1.

I actually didn't play episode 2-3-4-5 before about i'd say 3 weeks ago and finished the games 3 days ago. I was totally pleasantly surprised at the quality of the newest episodes versus the old ones ( not a fan of the 1st one ). I generally dislike walking in the woods for some reason!

Trial and execution. Wonderfully dramatic without sacrificing any of the humour.

True. I was moved by this whole series with all the Morgan Leflay storyline. It was masterfully done:)

    4>5>3>2>1, but I rate them all 10/10

4 is just perfect times two with vanilla sauce. Awesome athmosphere, the best jokes, and the ending is just WOW. Not for the surprise but for the way they pulled everything off. Among top five gaming experiences after ten years++ of playing video games.

5 is kinda it's own thing, we know the story by then and 5 is the great conclusion which has it's own quality and is hard to compare to the others IMO. The battle was pulled off perfectly with that serious-ish spin.

3 is just awesome. I didn't like the manatee concept at first but it impressed. It had maybe the best group of cast among the chapters. Morgan, Santino, Noogie, Murray...

2 was great, feeling more in-depth and plot-moving than 1. And LeChuck's parts were awesome.

1 served as a great introduction to the series. The events themselves weren't the greatest, more just being the beginning of such a great game. And Winslow and Desinge were awesome of course.

Part IV was just amazing! Easily the hardest of them all and filled with the most epic moments.

Wow. I am surprise that episode 5 is not getting more love soo far. It's totally awesome and distinctive with tons of charms. If only They would have brought murray into it :)

Yeah, Rise of the Pirate God was my favourite... just. It had the most locations (though most were recycled ones), it had great humour, great new characters, the underworld was stunning and the game finished the series and story nicely, while opening up a new one (with the scene after the credits).

I voted for Chapter 5, though I had a hard time not picking Chapter 4.

I loved chapter 3, it just had the right kind of puzzles and I think it was probably the best graphically, apart from the intro sequence of chapter 1.

I decided on 4, but I have to admit that 3 is better designed. Four has incredible atmosphere, is heavy on story, rises up the emotional stakes, and masterfully switches between the bizarrely comic and the poignant. It does, however, have the controversial jungle hunt, which, for some people, ruined the pacing. And the scene with Morgan's death was a little awkward, though they saved it from being entirely cliche by having Guybrush go all James Bond at the beginning. Still, that chapter does have a lot of awesome set-pieces, as well as the best bit of re-used dialogue ever at the end.

3 overall was just superbly designed. To be honest, it's the middle section I dislike - the part with DeCava's crew. The puzzle solutions are funny, and the puzzles themselves are creative and deeply woven into the story, but the dialogue didn't work for me. It was a little too straight-up. I found myself liking the episode around the time, I don't know, I finally found the cochlea. I think many people felt the same way. The whole thing just soared afterwards. The bit with the manatee and the travel guide was, for me, the jewel in the crown. Little things like Morgan being disappointed with Guybrush after he screws-up the first face-off, the use of Morgan's sword as a symbol of trust between the two characters, and, of course, the masterful bit where DeCava picks-up the locket Guybrush has pasted his own photo on (the story is fed by a puzzle), inciting him to want to cream Threepwood, are all reasons why this episode rocked. Plus, "ship made entirely out of rubber trees!" Haha I can't believe I didn't think of it either.

Oh and the camera placement was just great.

I want to pick 5, but - although it has some superb puzzles (the sword fighting comes to mind) - it also has some very easy ones, as well as uneven pacing. It also decided it didn't want to explain the story properly at the end. Some hilarious bits in there, though.

5, on account of LeChuck, and the creepy feel of the Crossroads.

I love how if you look at the poll results, it basically maps out the levels of excitement a person should feel when watching any one brilliant movie or playing one brilliant game :P

I voted for RotPG, but it was almost a tie with lair of the leviathan and trial & execution.

My tought exactly. The part with the jungle hunt kinda ruined it for me. I don't enjoy that type of puzzle. Not because they are hard, but because i think they are boring and tedious. I will agree that the storytelling in this episode was beyond everything i ever imagined i'd get out of this series of game and gets me even more excited about future telltale games!

Also i agree about the atmosphere of rise of the pirate god, it was totally unexpected for me. TellTale surprises me with the quality of what they manage to do. I hold this company in the highest regard really. It shows that they love what they do.

The end of episode 4 was the ultimate for a LeChuck fan.

    1. It brought the best feeling of "Im playing a new MI game and its great."
  • edited March 2010
    Trial & Execution for me.
They managed to have two dramatic on-screen deaths for two major characters - one of whom is Guybrush himself - and yet it still felt like a Monkey Island game. For me, that's really something.

Rise of the pirate god! I liked the atmosphere in this chapter!

Chapter 5 was definitely my favorite, but 4 was right up there too. I thought it concluded the season nicely and had a great overall mood. Also, the final puzzle was clever and neat. It made me smile when I figured it out. Finally a use for that ring!

Honestly 5 gave me nostalgia at the start, that hill, that dog, the guy in the boat, suddenly, weird as it sounds, I thought - hey what's this, I feel like i am playing Mi2/3 again? The next few steps were also good BUT then it faded and I was let down. I started to dream of CMI, when you arrive in that house with those rooms and tough puzzles. The thing missing for me which I had in LCR and CMI - so much space, exploration, so many options. You could go to one zone and work on something then go to totally another zone and see if you could work on something - it's how I felt when I first played WoW - a swear word here but I had the feeling I was travelling and had options, areas to work on.

Ep V in the end turned out like the rest, very linear and tiring. I just couldn't be bothered to go do all those bar repeat quests. Same for the court case in previous, that was really boring. I know it's episodic and limited on what can be delivered per episode and whilst I kinda enjoyed it, I am amazed no one is really taking TTG to claims on their puzzles and itemisation. It's shocking. Could be so much better. The whole cool thing in MI1, 2, 3 was the vast amount of items and how they might interact. Did we get that with TMI? Hell no.

I loved to see Monkey Island back and it was kinda fun but it was like being an original Star Wars fan and *accepting* the prequels - better than nothing but childhood firmly raped. Based on reception I think they will continue as they have done in this season with TMI2. An average of 8/10 means they don't have to change their take on the series. I will probably buy the next season but I hope it's better. Surely with the amount of sales there will be room for improvement. Yes new Sam N Max is kinda fun I guess but let's not rest on laurels. I tried Sam N Max TTG after loving original and it suffered some same symptoms for me as TMI - kinda fun but not nearly as good.

TTG you can do better. Hoping to see it. A fan? Yes but with reservations.

Trial and Execution is no doubt my favorite episode. It was the perfect mix of Monkey Island's signature humor and some seriously dramatic moments. Oh, and also we got to
toss De Singe into a giant blender,
    and that's always a plus.

four without a doubt... Love the night time vibe

Hard to say. I liked 3 and 4 a lot.
5 was also awesome. 1 and 2 are a bit behind the last 3...

    4 - 5 - 3 -1 - 2

To be honest I would have 4 and 5 share the 1st spot, they both have things in them that makes them good in each their way.
Chapter 5 was really good, but 4 takes the top spot because of the ending, I love an ending that can touch my emotions.

Lair was really well done plus the music was great.
Those merfolks in Spinner were really horrible.

    3, 4, 5, 1, 2.

Lair was awesome due to the four M's: Morgan, Murray, Moose and Music (of the kick ass variety.) It was also the funniest episode hands down in my book, though they all had their moments!
  • edited April 2010
I loved how dark episode 5 was, but I still have to say that episode 4 was overall the best in the series for me, and to be honest, the first that could stand against some of CMI, MI1 or MI2. The best part when it comes to puzzles and shocking (and not so shocking) revelations.

Episode 5. The cross roads was cool to play in and I enjoyed the story.

    three people died on screen

Not to sure who you forgot but most likely
    Desinge

EDIT: also pirate god for me.
It was sad at the same time exciting
nearly shed a tear on how Lechuck tortured Guybrush

Lair of the Leviathan for me, after some thought. All the characters and puzzles were fun and the dynamic between Morgan and Guybrush was key in this episode. I also loved the intro to this episode more than the other episodes.
  • edited April 2010
Lair of the Leviathan is a perfect balance and the atmosphere in the Cantina is great. To me it was the best part of the game.

    The Siege of Spinner Cay.
Why? Two words: Sexy fish. Yeah, I'm as kinky as Winslow :o
  • edited April 2010
Lair of the Leviathan is far and away the best.

It has the best puzzles, best script, it best captures the MI atmosphere, and it was very tight(as opposed to the bloated mess of spinner cay).

Oh, and it was the first time telltale injected some interest into the episode-specific characters - the generic models were far better hidden, and they had decent personalities.
