So, how does this DVD work?

Is it like a normal DVD, where you can play all the extras on your DVD player, and then play the game on your PC, or do you have to do everything on the PC? Obviously you're not going to be playing the game on a DVD player, but I would like to get some idea of how it all works. Also, another question: Are the extras on a seperate disc to the game?

If it's like every other Telltale release thus far, there will be one disc. You can play the majority of the extras in a DVD player(or of course your PC). There may be wallpapers or other things in a data folder on the DVD as PC extras. And, as you said, of course the games are played on a PC.

    Or Mac.

If it is similar to the previous DVDs, it's going to be one hell of a hybrid disc. I wonder if it's even possible to have DVD, PC, and Mac all on one disc. Of course, the hybrid Sam & Max discs surprised me, so I suppose I wouldn't be surprised at this point.

...this post made surprisingly little sense.

Doesn't matter, those are what make forums interesting ("Who was phone").

Also, on the DVD, do you play an episode, then finish it close it and open the dvd again to start up the next episode?
Or is it continuous, like one big fat long adventure game like the previous MI's?

Nobody's really sure on that yet, I think. Though it has been discussed to great extent.

I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that it will be five separate games, so it won't be one continuous adventure.
They did say they were maybe gonna try something like that with Sam & Max Season 3 though.

    Nope :(

    Also, for the DVD:

Just so you know that we haven't forgotten about you, the DVD is currently being approved by the powers that be. Once I have their approval on everything (which knowing the standard approval process can take a week or two sadly), I'll be able to let you guys know what's up.

I'd just hate to tell you something and then have Lucas or someone come back and say it all has to be changed.

Wait, what? You can put TTG DVDs into a DVD player? Does the bonus disc of my Sam & Max Season One retail release go in the DVD player? I just through it in my computer.
  • edited March 2010
The ones from the Telltale Store come with just one disc. They're freaky hybrid discs that function as a DVD with all the bonus content when put into a DVD player and as a game disc when put into a PC. Except for some reason, my computer autoplays the DVD half when I put the disc in and runs the game when I click on it in My Computer.

Also, from what I understand (haven't gotten to trying it myself), there's bonus wallpapers in the folders on the disc.

Oh, to clarify, I own the two Sam & Max discs from the Telltale Store, but the rest are the same as far as I know.

Obviously you did not read the text on the disc itself.

The Season One disc can play the majority of the extras in a DVD player, yes.
  • edited March 2010
But he's talking about the retail release, which is already different from the hybrid disc in the Telltale Store in that it has two discs instead of one.
  • edited March 2010
Crap, how the hell did I skip over "retail"?
  • edited March 2010
the retail discs aren't hybrid? why would they be different?
    TTG please explain this.
  • edited March 2010
Because we are so special we get more than those silly retail folks.

On that account; 2 disks, wtf?
  • edited March 2010
Actually, one of the discs is a DVD and one is a regular CD. I'm not sure which one it is. One has just the games and the other has the bonus content (part of the soundtrack, some wallpapers, couple videos, can't remember what else).
  • edited March 2010
    ohhh...

Maybe TTG had the idea that whomever was buying the retail games may only have a CD-ROM or CD Burner, and putting the main game on CD would allow for TTG to expand their target market.

While most anyone who is modern-day enough to buy digital distribution software would have a DVD-ROM, or else wouldn't need it on CD anyway bcuz of the downloads.

TTG didn't do distribution... Atari did I believe. So it would be them choosing that (along with not using Steve Purcell art, but renders *shudders*).

And I believe for some reason some devs do think like that, that they still need to ship games on CD-roms for Walmart and whatever in the US. Which is why occassionally bad stuff like 4 CD's happen instead of just one DVD.
I mean, I don't care if it's just the US, but why for us Europeans too?

Luckily that's on decline nowadays it seems.
  • edited March 2010
No. The game disc is a DVD and the bonus disc is a regular CD. I think that's the way it is. The games certainly wouldn't fit on a CD. And there really isn't all that much bonus material on the bonus disc so it makes sense that that would be a regular CD.

Just to clarify some things (since I know it is taking a while to get details to you all), the DVD will unfortunately not have a custom dvd player portion on the disk. Making them hybrid AND have a dvd partition was just a little too much for us to get working.

There will still be videos on the disk of course, but they will be stored as either .WMV or .avi, depending on what OS you are using.

Anyway, to make up for the lack of an awesome custom video menu, I threw a small mountain of concept art on to the disk. (So much so that it may be slowing down the approval process... ooops!)
  • edited March 2010
I have no experience with Macs, but I guess, there must be some authoring software out there able to produce such a hybrid disc including a properly aligned VIDEO_TS directory.

There probably is, but it just wasn't something we had the resources or know-how to do right now. We still have all of the content that normally would have gone onto the dvd, we just don't have the fancy menus for it.

Correct. It was really important to us that we be able to include both Mac and PC versions onto the disk, so that was the sacrifice we had to make.

Two discs? What season? 1 or 2? The retail Spanish version of Season 1 was still just one disc (DVD), but it came in a nice embossed metal box.

Season One. I don't think Season Two is out in retail yet. Was it a DVD case or a box? Mine is a box. With a flip-open cover and two paper disc cases each with a disc in them. Maybe I should take a picture...

It is in the US, by Atari.

Must be recent then. Just another thing I have to pick up sigh....as well as the Wii and 360 versions. And Steam. Man I'm a sucker for collecting.

Yeah, it was mentioned in this blog post. Obviously, the Wii version of the game was the main focus of the post.

I'm not seeing "Atari" on here. Someone help me out. ...is that "The Adventure Company"?

EDIT: hmm... wiki says "The episodes were initially distributed online by GameTap and Telltale Games themselves, although the later retail releases of the game were published by The Adventure Company and JoWooD Productions in North America and Europe respectively."

Atari didn't publish the retail releases of Season One, only Season Two. Season One was done by Jowood/The Adventure Company(I don't know the relationship between the two, it's likely one is owned by the other/is a division of the other or something).
  • edited March 2010
I also have the Wii port by The Adventure Company with the title Season One.

Yeah, post has been edited. I was under the impression that Atari did that, but I was wrong.

While we're on the topic of Sam & Max, what's the name of the first season, anyway? I've seen the name of season 2 around, but never the title of season 1.

"Sam and Max: Save the World". You can see it on the Wii and XBLA releases of Season One.
