Do u think its time for an animated series or a movie of Monkey Island

Ive been thinking about this for along time now, ever since Pirates of the Caribbean came out. Ive always wondered why nobody had even considered of doing either an animated series or an animated movie of Monkey Island. I think they can still do it, but I would pretty much want to see it as a 2D film.

MI Movie has already been done... But it's called Pirates of the Caribbean...

I think I'd just like to have another game rather than a movie. A game provides you with a much longer period of enjoyment.

Especially when it's an episodic release. ;)

    Haha yeah! 2 hours vs. 5.5 months - I think I know which one I'd choose :).

    No.

I wouldn't mind seeing an cartoon show based on the first 4 games (maybe Tales too) in CMI or somewhat better style.

It could also be like a way to advertise the games :)
Kinda like the .hack anime series.

It must have the original cast of course.

It could definitely work if done right... Possibly a mini series.

    Steven Spielberg Presents...

"Monkey Island: The Legend of Guybrush Threepwood"

No. What would Guybrush be without me? The gamer!
Might as well look at a walkthrough. :(

    Not popular enough yet.

    Maybe after MI2:SE.

I say they should do a live action movie.

    that would really be awesome

Woops, I didn't read the 'animated series' part in the title. I guess an animated seies could work, but I'd want hour-long episodes; not half-hour one. Because the episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (CGI series) only half half-hour long episodes and I always find that they move too fast through the story and could definitely do with more running time so that characters can be elaborated, environments properly explored, more complex plots used, more explanation involved. MI would certainly need longer episodes if there were to be a mini-series, but like Irishmile said, it has to be done right. Otherwise it could be disastrous.

And another thing, if they were to create a series or a film, then they should not attempt to change the style of MI or dumb it down for the more mainstream audience. I would hate that.

I made a thread about this awhile back, but i would love to see a Animated series, but of course they have to do it right, and not butcher it, do it in a curse style or even the art style of tales (from the tarot cards), i think one thing i enjoy from Escape was the cut scenes, cause it was near enough like a short monkey island cartoon, if tales gets permission from lucas arts to make a animated series ill be happy

I think a film, if promoted right, would get far more fans than the games ever did, and give all the games a huge new lease of life!
  • edited April 2010
Why not a feature film and then a series to follow it up? This is quite common.

Don't think it should ever be a film, the series has been viewed already from several different points, (3/4/tales) and it's been good And bad in places. A movie would not leave fans satisfied.

    Maybe not...

    ...animated.

I think an animated series would be better than a movie, but if there was going to be an animated series i think each storyline should be across 5 episodes, like the chapters in each game.

First post but I've thought about this before.

I actually played CMI from start to finish in front of my niece, she's 9. I had a save to skip the sword fighting up to Captain Rottingham but other than that I just played it through start to finish in a little over two hours. She really liked it and the game does play to a child. A lot of the time she had actually forgotten it was a game and it was fun to explain some of the easier puzzles to her. I might be able to do the same kind of stuff with TMI but none of the other Monkey games really play to a child like that.

As far as an MI movie for teens/adults though I was rolling in the aisles during Potc2. The Voodoo lady came onscreen for god sakes. I think strictly because of little things like that and in particular direct scene lifts (the dog jail puzzle from MI2 vs Jack in the holds with the dog) I don't think an adaptation would work anymore. I'd be extremely satisfied if there was a Monkey Island "hats off" or reference in the upcoming Pirates movie though, even if it was just a monocled cartographer.

Both MI2 and PotC1 took the dog/jail bit from the original PotC ride at Disneyland. There are probably other things from the ride that influenced MI, but I haven't been to Disney in so long it's hard to remember. Anyway, both were borrowing from the same source, rather than one borrowing from the other.

However, you may have a point in that people might not realize that, and think MI was copying from the PotC movies.

Wasn't there some book on which both MI and PoTC were based?

    I think it's called "PotC 4"... :p

I hadn't seen most of those! It actually looked like a decent movie!

"On Stranger Tides", the rights to adapt it were bought to make POTC 4, as mentioned above.

I actually knew that one was from the ride which is why I picked it as an example. The Voodoo lady was not on the ride though :p You actually can't go back and check at Disney either. The ride has been taken down and rebuilt into a PotC themed ride with Barbossa chasing Jack through it as you go. The Voodoo lady can be explained by the scriptwriter having previously been involved in the Monkey Island movie but later writing PotC after the former was canceled, in that case it's a lift.

There's definitely a connection between the two mediums, it's just not publicly admitted to. Now that MI is having a revival it might become more apparent to more people though.

I would refuse to watch it if it was animated.

No, a Monkey Island film is a terrible idea, because proper one could not be made now. Monkey Island, as a film, should be a live action film shot in front of painted backdrops, like the Errol Flynn pirate films that Secret so happily takes inspiration from.
  • edited April 2010
that is crazy talk..... MI would make a really fantastic subject for an animated movie.

Thanks for the link! Most of those were new to me.

Interesting how similar one of the Elaine movie concepts (@30s in the video) is to the Tales of Monkey Island Elaine.

Ooh, this one reminds me of Scar's awesome "Be Prepared" scene in The Lion King:

I didn't much care for the idea of a movie before, but now having seen the concept art I'm way sold on an animated one. Shame it's unlikely to happen.

I recently got thinking that Chris Sanders and Dean DeBois (The team behind "Lilo and Stitch" and "How to Train your Dragon") should direct and write it.

    Who's with me?

    (Silence, as always happens...)

Don't touch that remote! There is more "Adventures of Monkey Island" coming your way right here on KidsWB!

I would only watch it if Its made by the orignal creators of the game, since I enjoyed the Sam and Max animated series as long as no one else tries to make it and ruins it. But to be honest if you look at MI3 thats pretty much all hand animated isnt it? At least thats what I heard. Playing that game is pretty much like watching a movie. I agree that id prefere to play the game with cutscenes in between. Its just a animated series + a lil extra
