Thinking about getting a MI tatoo, any suggestions?

Hmm...I am thinking about getting a Monkey Island tatoo, what are your suggestions?

ATM I am leaning more towards something with Lechuck...

Just the words "That's the second most botched tattoo I've ever seen" should be sufficient... :D

I doubt anyone could ever talk me into getting a tattoo, let alone a Monkey Island tattoo ... but at gunpoint, I'd probably go with Murray. :P

    Jaques the monkey

A three headed monkey or Murray would do on the shoulder.

    Has a pixel style LeChuck.

But um, I guess it depends. Are you going for something subtle? Or something brazenly obvious?

murray is the smallest more subtle one so I'd go with him =] I don't like things that are big and flashy. It can make a look a bit "busy"

Woah, a lot of people not supporting the tattoo idea! I for one am all for it. I too am interested in getting a tattoo showing pride for one of my favorite video game series, Metal Gear Solid.

But my advice is to get a tattoo that is from or inspired by MI, but still looks like it could be from anywhere. If you look at it this way: someday you are bound to have to explain the tattoo to someone; a future spouse, an employer, a group of friends, etc. And if you have a tattoo that is fairly "geeky", like the MI logo for instance, it would most definitely not impress anyone not into the series, or video games in general for that matter. However, if you have something that could pass of as a more "generic" tattoo, then people would probably just think that it would be a neat tattoo design, while you yourself, and those who have played the games, have the knowledge that it's a cool fan-based tattoo tribute.

So if you still want a LeChuck tattoo, try to find something that looks like a generic Zombie/Ghost Pirate, but still having that LeChuck charm, like the one from a previous post ;)

Never get a tattoo just to be able to brag about it to other people. And why get a game tattoo if you're gonna lie about what it really is anyway? If you're embarrassed about it, just don't get it.
Or get a t-shirt of Monkey Island or something. Something you can hide from people you don't want finding out you're a nerd :p

I didn't mean that you would be embarrased about it, or brag about it to other people. I'm just saying that I know how people react negatively to geekiness, so why go looking to be ridiculed if you can avoid it? A lot of people these days get tattoos for personal reasons, not meant to really show them off. If one was like those punks getting chinese letters meaning "strength" or something lame like that, then no, that person should not get a geek tattoo. =P But if I had a geeky tattoo, I would prefer to be able to give a believable "easy" explanation to someone who just would'nt understand or care.

    Something like:

    "Hey, nice cartoon skull"

    "Thanks!"

    Instead of:

"Hey, what does that tattoo mean?"

"Well, it's from this video game, see, and it's a pirate named Guy-"

    "NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD!!!!"

The best response to somebody reacting as in the latter case, is to just walk away. People that act like that are just not worth interacting with.

    Indeed. Don't get a tattoo ;)

    Agreed :)

I've learned from experience that sometimes it's almost impossible to really walk away from people like that. Like people focusing too much on something that they don't like, making it hard to be with them even if you want to. So yeah, I'm a little bitter, and have submitted to this cold and harsh world! :p

So to the one who started this thread, be prepared for the consequenses. :D

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where everyone could do what they wanted and not fear the outcome? That world would probably get blown up, but it's still a nice thought! :p
  • edited May 2010
Then again, why is everyone being so bias? It's his body!

Monkey Island is a cartoony, comedic game, it's not like you can get a dark and bad ass tattoo. So...whatever you get will be funny looking.

Yeah, this is what I'd go with. Murray would be a good choice for this reason. Almost everyone would just think it was a skull, and the few people who recognized it as Murray would be big enough MI fans that they'd think it was awesome.
  • edited May 2010
But isn't Murray just a skull? How would you make the tattoo specifically Murray?
  • edited May 2010
I think if you like a game enough to get a tattoo of it, you're not likely to want to hide the fact that you like that game.
Plus why would you want someone who doesn't accept you as the super-geek you are?

I really have no suggestions but I think if it was me (which isn't likely to happen, so take that with a grain of salt) I'd take something I feel is iconic but in a way minimalist? Like, one swirly cloud, or something.

Hmm...a skull is kinda boring...and it could also be mistaken for an SS skull if not done properly....and I don't want a tattoo which could be mistaken for this.

I am still leaning towards lechuck, one of my all time characters of any video game. There are a lot of different possibilities, ghost, demon, undead, yes even human.

It is really hard to decide which one and what motive and from what part of the game...I somehow like the undead one from MI2....maybe I should wait for MI2:SE to get a cool version of it?

Hmm thinking about it, LeChuck in Curse was excellent when he was holding the demonic voodoo cannon ball and laughing, anybody remember that szene?

Hey guys, you can see my Manny Calavera (Grim Fandango) tattoo here:

Would love to hear your thoughts?

To me, if you keep the design simple it looks more effective. Something in a similar style for Murray might look cool?

But anything related to MI just increases your coolness level, doesn't it?

Although I would never get a tattoo personally (I don't like permanent things like that), if I were to get one, I would try to get something that is not just a stamp of a character. The Murray idea is good, because it is a clever looking skull with a great expression, and different from the regular skulls that some people get. Murray has character.

Or getting the Meathook tattoo is a hilariously brilliant idea because it is an interactive tattoo that references the game.

But if you are really set on having LeChuck, but want it to be subtle, I guess the best thing to advise would be to make the colors subdued so there is subtle nature to it. And maybe make it almost wispy looking (like a ghost) if that is even possible with tattoos (I don't know the methods of shading they have).

There's some cool, simple artwork in the opening credits of Curse, some of which would be great for a tattoo.

It's your body, it's your choice. You asked for advice, I sustain these opinions and also add my own: If one can be awesome without a tattoo, one does not need a tattoo. If one can't be awesome without a tattoo, one should look within to find the source of this "lack of awesomeness", not outside.

Everybody is awesome in their own special way. If you feel the need to get a tattoo, maybe you didn't discover your special way of being awesome, yet. ;)

But what's the problem with people just wanting to get a tattoo? To say that people only get tattoos because they're insecure is being a bit rash, isn't it?
  • edited May 2010
I personally don't get why anyone would post to ask him not to do it. I'd be annoyed if I posted to ask what kind of haircut I should go for and half the people posted that I shouldn't cut my hair.
Obviously' the OP has already decided to get a tattoo. I'm sure they know it's permanent and painful. No need to be their mom. Just because you wouldn't want a tattoo doesn't mean nobody should get one.

I'd never get a tattoo either but so what? I'm not going to go into threads about "Which med school should I go to" only to answer "don't become a doctor it sucks!"

    Don't get a tattoo.

Especially not one about a game you'll regret later on.

Only tatoos that I agree with are deaths of loved ones etc etc, the rest are just silly.

"I don't think you should get a tattoo" is just as valid an opinion as "I think you should get this tattoo"

His thread says he's thinking about it. Not "I'm getting one, tell me which one to get". We are perfectly within our rights to express our opinion on the issue in a courteous manner, which we all have done. No one has said anything derogatory or insulting to him, we're just providing our opinions, and if he disagrees, good for him, he doesn't have to listen to strangers on the internet.
