I'm not entirely sure what you're criticizing here. Do you think he's not purposefully claiming to be the only persecuted? And I'm genuinely sorry for someone who has that. I once knew someone who was the same way, and it ate up her entire life and crippled what was a bright individual.

No, I saw it differently. It looked to me like he was commenting on, by his pov, the stupidity of the situation and the antagonism of the replies to his topic. Because if it's not protagonism it's antagonism, although I'm not sure I used that word right. Anyway, even if they were funny, I can easily see how George feels persecuted.
