All composers steal from each other. S e r i o u s l y. It's almost impossible to not crossover themes especially in such a music prevalent era. And then there's the downright theft.

As for my research, when I know what good and evil is, I'll let you know what side I favor.

I'm not saying I suspect theft theft.

I can tell John Williams style in that I hear elements from Star Wars in Harry Potter; I can tell Danny Elfman's style in that I hear elements from Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice in in the Tim Burton Batman movies; and I can tell Hans Zimmer's style in that I can hear elements from PoTC in the Chris Nolan Batman movies.

I'm just saying that it feels as though a number of sounds in music from various different movies sound the same in places such that I can readily tell who the composer is.

Still, you might be right though.

I think one of the more blatant debates is John William's Star Wars music, which seems to take from a series called "The Planet Suites". Fans of Venture Bros. may also recognize the introduction of this song as well.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0bcRCCg01I
This is "Mars, Bringer of War".

By the way, even if you don't like Star Wars, or Venture Bros (and shame on you if you don't watch Venture Bros), you should probably listen to this track for its sheer awesomeness. That put the Empire to shame almost a century ahead of its time.

Also Alcoremortis, since you like Dvorak, try listening to the Throne Room track from A New Hope
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lkx5X6cZAR8
And New World Symphony from Dvorak
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc8rsgOgJ2I.
Play a game and count to 15-16 into the songs. Because they both use the same melodic drop.

I can hear Dvorak in Williams :)

For added fun, do the theme to Jaws and The Fellowship of the Ring, same symphony. Man, when I first heard that I was weirded out at how much I heard John Williams.

Then I remembered that Dvorak came first.

I always knew there was something similar between those pieces! And now I know what it is. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go binge on Dvorak, since you brought it up.

I'd say break out a The Dude quote and just tell him: "Well...that's just, you know, like your opinion, man."

That should shut him up. There really is no comeback for something like that except for Big Lebowski quotefests and those are just all good fun.

It's amazing how you can massively break something while trying to do something that should be easier than easy.

I don't know how I messed up my linux laptop, I was just trying to do something with Frets on Fire. The desktop wen all weird and now it wont fully boot.

No, Todays lesson is do not meddle with that which you do not understand.

See, I don't actually know how to do that on any computer, I barely know how to do a FSCK. I'm computer savvy, but not enough.
  • edited August 2011
well, to get into your BIOS, you'd have to look up your computer's bios key... different computers have you press F2, F8, DEL etc on start-up. unfortunately it's not universal which it is. This might help. Look in your BOOT or RECOVERY menu to see options. Usually there's something like "Boot from yesterday(or 2 days ago)" or something like that.

linux could have it's own recovery options. I know windows does. I've had to do it from windows and the BIOS before and I didn't notice a difference.

My solution to any computer based problem is to look for the answer on the internet, google-searching as many related things as possible until something helpful comes up and failing that...ask my brother, who's an electrical engineering/computer science person. It's worked quite well.

Also, turning it on and off repeatedly, unplugging everything that can be unplugged and replugging it in, dusting off the inside, removing all the removable disks and chips and whatnot from the inside, blowing on them and putting them back...you get the idea. Since I know next to nothing about software or how it works, I always try and make sure there isn't a hardware problem first.

Gamers are cool, warm, welcoming people. It had been my experience at conventions, but it seems to be the case in other contexts to. Lending you their cards, dice, etc, teaching you the rules, giving you advice while letting you make your own decisions, be it for tabletop RPGs, board games or card games, gamers are absolutely awesome.

Videogamers can vary a little bit more. You still have the same people, but on top of that I've known some with no patience as well, and I think the nature of the tabletop games is such that being patient and quiet is kind of a requirement that videogames don't have (although as I said, you can still be that way. After all a lot of gamers play both kinds of games).

EDIT: yes, they are cool AND warm. And it's not contradictory at all. Take that, English language!

Aye, but its fairly easy to tell the good videogamers from the bad.

And these days, the bad ones are more prevalent, mostly due to the popularity and accessability of the industry.

These days I'd argue that there are two main types of gamers.
There are those that call themselves "gamers", but only have a handful of consoles, a few games of the popular type, like COD, Halo, Forza.
Mostly competative FPS, Sports and racing games.
    (Though some favour fighters too)

Those guys usually tend to be hyper-competative, impatient, and quick to anger.

Though some, you can have a genuinely good time with.

The other type is the enthusiast.
Has games on various consoles, of different genres.
Tend to be more mellow, patient, forgiving.
Though some can be colder, and more elitist.
Can get very mad over something that violates their standards, (like Spoony)
Fortunately its these guys who tend to populate forums and that.

I don't think you need to have lots of consoles to be the mellow type. If you're kinda poor you might have only one console and not that many titles, but then you'll have people going for the big titles or others going for the indie games, and because they're cheaper and more eclectic, getting a broader experience.

Speaking of which, you don't need a console at all. You can be a (video)gamer on a computer.

True, true, but I've never seen an enthusiast that doesn't at least follow the gaming press, and have a few emulators on hand! XD

Don't get me wrong, I love John Williams. I just find it funny that they put these two pieces back to back on one of his collection albums.

It's called self-plagiarism, and no composer who is around for some time can really escape it. Yes it hurts the fans, it really does.

Well, I seem to remember that Danny Elfman doesn't actually write down any of the music he composes, so it's probably a whole lot easier for him to accidentally (or on purpose...whatever) borrow from himself than most other composers.

Doodo has a question, if a girl , or young woman calls you dear does that mean she's attracted to you? She was passing the sign in sheet and she called me dear. Some things I'm just not all there for, and I was wondering if she has begun to flirt with me or not...

I didn't really respond to her, I know maybe I should have. I don't know what my problem is, I go through this every year. It's not that women don't look at me or show interest in me. I'm just not good at doing it.

Know what I mean? If I actually had sex, I'd get carried away to a hospital for shock...
Anyways, as I was saying Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow.

I know it sounds superficial but some times I don't feel like a normal life is for me, even though I desire one.

The answer to this, as to all questions of the sort, is of course:
    No, not necessarily.

It takes a teensy-weensy bit more to find out if a woman is attracted to you. Talking a little bit more might help. :D

I've finally finished watching season one of the Walking Dead, just watched the last 3 episodes tonight. I watched the first three episodes nearly 4 weeks ago, so a little slow at getting it finished but I got there in the end. Now to look forward to season two.
