Marty or... not Marty?

edited January 2011 in Back to the Future
Well, thanks to TellTale for stealing my idea... I was going to make BttF games after becoming a professional game developer! :p

Anyway, I'm really excited about the news. But. There is one question I have. Do you think TellTale BttF games will have Marty as the main character, or someone else?

In my past vision of future Back to the Future games, they took place during the few minutes of the first move - after Doc drives Marty to his home in 1985, and before he returns for Marty and Jennifer from 2015. That moment of time gives the possibility to do infinite number of stories and plotlines without contradicting the movie. Yeah, no Marty, but still there's Doc.

Still. We all know that games based on movies, movies based on books, games based on books, books based on movies, and all this shit, even if it's the same story (actuall, ESPECIALLY if it's the same story), usually contradicts each other because each is in it's own type of media. So I'm not against Marty. I like Marty, Michael J. Fox is great (and, I've heard the games were first announced during his birthday, is it true? Well, today, yesterday, depends on your time zone)

But, anyway, what do you think? Marty or no Marty?

    Marty!

    Marty!

Rhymes with mighty. :) Would you like to change your nickname to martypirate? :p

It's gotta be Marty. Making a Back to the Future game without Marty would be like a Monkey Island game without Guybrush.
  • edited June 2010
^ Well, Marty will be in it no matter what. The question is will you PLAY as Marty, or be a 3rd character that interacts with Doc & Marty, as is often used in licensed games (see CSI, or many Star Wars games where you usually play as a new character, but meet the familiar ones along the way)

Anyway, it HAS to be Marty. No question.

Or a mario game without mario(not counting luigis mansion, super princess peach or mario is missing)

Well, Blade Runner game felt just great without Harrison Ford.

As I said, I'm not against Marty, but I don't see anything bad if he won't be in a game.

Now, if the plot will be based on the plot of the movie, that's one thing. Of coure Marty. No question absolutely. If the plot will take into different directions away from the movie, many stories and adventures, OR if it will be both movie-and-expanded-universe (so to speak), then I would pity Marty. The kid during BttF2 and 3 probably just dreamed about when it's all going to end.

I think Marty is in another league, not in the same as Sam, Max or Guybrush. The movies were... well, realistic is a poor choice of words, but, well, not overly over the top. I don't care for Mario as a character. Nobody does. really. That's why he has so many games and adventures. If there will be lots of adventures in BttF, Marty may as well lose his appeal to me. Maybe the game itself.

Marty never travelled in time because he wanted to. Only because he had to. Sometimes because of some accidents. Just how many accidents may happen to keep him travelling through time? Back to the Future is not Monkey Island. It's fun, it's adventereous, but it's different style. I don't want to see that style gone.

Martyyyy! And Doc Brown! Play as both of them! :D

(trying to be coherent, due to the excitement)

It's hard, it really is. I just hope they're is a delorian Mini game.

This is definitely great news for Michale J Fox, he does voice acting. I'm surprised no one approached him with any Back To The Future material before.

That is of course after the movies...

You know, it's been said that these games will take place in the movie worlds, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll star the same characters...I think we should prepare for this possibility.
  • edited June 2010
I hope it's Marty, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it wasn't.

TBH, as much as I love Marty's character in the films, the key character in games would be Doc for me, because you have to have him as the eccentric genius behind the time-travel. If it's just "oh I bumped into the DeLorien, and now i'm in the old days, how odd" then it'll be a bit of a let down for me.

I can see that for Jurassic Park, but not for Back to the Future.

Figured now would be a good time to get a forum account. Hehe, I prey not honestly. I want a game in the world but with someone new. Don't get me wrong I love him in the movie but humor wise in a game form I can't see it working too well.
  • edited June 2010
It would work fine. But either way we don't really know for sure until we get more information (maybe at E3?) and until then we should still be prepared for that (unfavourable) possibility.

I just relized you know who we DO need in the game! biff-%282%29.jpg
If he's not in it I am not sold.
  • edited June 2010
You speak the truth, we can't have a Back to the Future Episodic adventure without a horrible main villain; I.E, Biff.
  • edited June 2010
Hey BUTTHEAD. Biff old biff. He is just absolutely hilarious, its mainly thanks to him and marty and doc actors that the movies are as great as they are.
  • edited June 2010
Okay, I'll be the devil's advocate here and go for not Marty. We know Marty-- time to branch out and meet someone new! That said, we absolutely MUST HAVE the doc!
  • edited June 2010
Back to the future IS marty and doc.

Who even remembers (or cares) about any other characters?
  • edited June 2010
Perhaps you control Jules and Verne in a Sam and Max style. It all depends on when the games are set I suppose. Pre BttF wouldn't have time travel and post would have the train but not the DeLorean. I'll be very interested to see when and where these take place.

Like in the cartoon, "Hey, Doc got another delorian."

As long as they don't change the DeLorean into another car (I'm looking at you Transformers!)

Not having Marty as the protagonist is like having Monkey Island with no Guybrush.
Having Marty as an NPC won't work either.

And we need Biff Tannen too!
  • edited June 2010
We don't NEED Biff Tannen. He was one villain. It'd be neat to see other villains. Maybe he could appear in a middle episode somewhere as a side-villain and have a self-contained plot and conflict which is resolved at the end of the episode but progresses the larger story into the next episode. Maybe you have to go to 1955 for some reason (best Biff, IMO) and Biff gets in the way for some reason or another. Kinda like Bowser in Super Mario RPG. As something more akin to a comedic nuisance villain.
  • edited June 2010
To me Biff is the LeChuck of the series, but that doesn't mean he has to be in every episode, you're right.

YES, bttf without the doc would be blasphemous!
  • edited June 2010
I do agree that BTTF has to feature Doc. He invented the time machine and he's always been a central part of the story. Is Biff is the best villain, I really hope we see him and it's possible we'll see him in the form of an ancestor or descendant.
However I'm not sure how having the story set in 1985 will work out.

I guess a possibility could be to have it set around 2015-ish and we could control Marty jr. as the main character. Could make it pretty interesting, and it would be a good opportunity to expand the story from the original movie trilogy and renew it. That's just my opinion though.

Funny, I thought you were looking at the 2002 Toyota Celica Time Machine Universal tried to show off as legit in the theme park.
    (Doc's "new project".)

(No images, but short version: it SUCKED. Why else has the net blocked all memories of it?)
  • edited June 2010
The game needs Doc. The game needs Tom Wilison (even if he doesn't play Biff heh). The game doesn't need Marty. If Michael J. Fox signs on board, great but I don't see the need to find some voice actor to do Marty's voice if Fox is unavailable.
  • edited June 2010
I'm sure Marty would love to be in this game.

I actually beat Telltale by some 20 years. It was 1990 (I think) when I made Back To The Future -game. And it was an adventure game. Text interface. No graphics. But an BttF adventure game nonetheless :)

Why would anybody change Doc's car?! It's the one bloody good thing to come out of the whole DeLorean debacle!

Think of the money Toyota would pay for a new time-travel machine.

And everybody who's watched Top Gear knows that the Hilux is damned indestructible, which makes a change from the rusty rubbish that was DeLorian, No matter how beautiful it was! (I joke, of course)
  • edited June 2010
The DeLorean is the icon of Back to the Future. Anytime you mention BttF, the first thing you think of is the Time Machine. It'll be a travesty if they make this game without figuring out a way to bring back the DeLorean.
  • edited June 2010
Go back in time using another time machine that Doc builds, and take it from the barn in the Wild West, somehow putting it back at the end of the season moments after you took it.
  • edited June 2010
He has the Time Train and obviously knows how to make the DeLorean. There's no reason why he can't take the Train back to the 80's, buy another DeLorean and make it again.
  • edited June 2010
Yes, but why would he want to after saying for 2 movies that he wants it destroyed and that one should live one's life without worrying about the future or the past. That's what needs to be addressed. Why the change of heart?

Doc changes his mind a lot. In the first movie before the Libyans arrive he makes a comment about how he might be able to make money by betting on sporting events, but then when Marty has the same idea in the second movie he scolds him for it.
  • edited June 2010
He also says he won't read the note.
  • edited June 2010
Plus, isn't the fact that Doc built the time-train proof that he changed his mind about the dangers of time travel?
