Which has best visuals?

Note: the game must look at least appealing to be in the poll

is it SE or old graphics?
  • edited June 2010
Yeah, you should add all the games to the poll, even if you refuse to accept the existence of EMI. It's a tough choice, but I'll choose Curse. The others are right behind it though, except for SMI:SE for the hair.

special editions sure, escape didn't have visuals though.
  • edited June 2010
I actually refuse to post in this poll, Escape should be acknowledged.

Even if you hate it, that's really unfair. You should acknowledge it.

I don't think you should remove options just because you don't want people to vote for them. It's your poll, but it feels like censoring. Not acknowledging the game in your own ratings is fine, but preventing other people to acknowledge it? I don't like that.

I also agree adding a separate option for each SE would work better. Of course, you can't modify the poll without a mod.

Monkey Island 2, easily. Yes, it's low res and pixelated, but damn the use of color, character design and art direction is just so good!

I don't understand why people hated the graphics in EMI, though. The characters were decent as well, I thought, most of them at least. A couple of bad designs, but I liked EMI Guybrush and Elaine. In fact, I like EMI Guybrush more than I like CMI Guybrush. The proportions seemed more right.

Didn't save the game from being not-as-good-as-the-others though.

sorry i was joking around :D

if you want i'll make a new forum with it included

Loved the style of MI3, still looking great. :)

I can not really vote ... they are all different mediums to some extent...

MI2 was a huge improvement back in the days.

Inferior is the word you're looking for.
  • edited June 2010
You know what? Escape wasn't that bad for its time. While the characters lacked detail, the backgrounds look really nice even now.
In fact, each game had its own graphical limitations, but they all managed to work around that to a degree, so they all deserve a cookie.

Monkey Island 2 has class graphics for pixels. I don't get how you couldn't play it in the modern day, the pixel art is brilliant. I went for Curse in the poll though

Finally, a poll that doesn't require too much thought. MI2 wins hands down! (Old graphics, I mean). They were vibrant and the most beautiful and a true work of art!
  • edited June 2010
As soon as there's an option for Escape (not that I want to vote for it, but it's just NOT FAIR!) and you separate between the SE's and the original versions of MI1 and 2, I'll cast my vote.

Party-pooper. I didn't look for a word. I wanted to write what I wrote. Everything I do and say is intentional. I am God.

Seriously though, I knew the word... I just thought it was funny to write it that way.

I didn't notice that Escape wasn't on the poll when I made my beeline for LeChuck's Revenge. That's lame that it was left off the poll.
  • edited June 2010
omg you guys are SO annoying sometimes you know that right?

    [actually, most of the time]
  • edited June 2010
    o ok.

I actually prefer the Deluxe Paint graphics of Secret to the hand-drawn backgrounds of the others.

Fair enough, I see what you were going for. I admit that it did have a greater effect than if you were to use 'inferior', sorry for the stupid correcting/nit-picking.

How this doesn't give any one a head ache is way beyond me. I love old school games, was brought up on them but MI2 makes me sick to my head anymore. I used to be able to play it no problem but my eyes have gone soft...

I'll be honest Monkey Island one doesn't do that to me.

Look how clean and clear it is...

They're all good for their own reasons, but Tales gets my vote. Curse comes in close second (particularly the cut-scenes) and there was something about the character animation in MI2 that I always loved too.
  • edited June 2010
Tales doesn't get my vote because I'm simply not a fan of 3D backgrounds. I really love the 3D character in 2D environment idea which EMI had (though EMI doesn't get my vote either because the models looked crappy).

Once I got used to the overall comic look I really loved the Curse graphics, but I'm a fan of Bill Tiller's art anyway.

MI2 looked amazing for its time. If you're too young to remember, I don't think you can fully appreciate how innovative it was.

Though I voted for MI2, I think Tales deserves props for the level of acting they were able to achieve with the main characters.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not... but I seriously hope you are. If not, how can those two screenshots even be considered a fair comparison? Let's take a better look at what Monkey Island 2 REALLY looks like:

    m2pc.png

I sure as hell don't get a headache looking at that. Not everyone has a problem with more details. Monkey Island 1 is more clean than MI2 because it is less detailed, obviously. I guess looking at Pong is even better than looking at MI1, because that has even less details. Only two colors, black and white.

Tough call between COMI and LCR, but I think Revenge wins.
I think it just created a better atmosphere whilst COMI was maybe a little too cartoony to do the same.

Hm, I think I understand what he means though. The problem is, while more details are generally a good thing, more details in a sprite-y environment can give you the feeling of disorientation when you first enter the room. That's also why I'm looking forward to LCR SE, because the enrichment of the backgrounds will definitively show to advantage.

I totally understand it too. Feels less clear, more pixely, more crowded. Definitely hurts my eyes more, especially with all the bright colours.

I wonder why SMI was never in Red/Blue/Brown/Green CGA. Like Sierra's AGI games.

Because they tried to avoid _any_ similarity between their own games and Sierra's? :D

Now I'm wondering how these games would look in black and white. By which I mean grayscale.

I think there is / was a way to play the original DOS version of SOMI in grayscale; at least I'm sure I played it once..

Ok, I know this is a joke, but you do know that CGA video modes aren't company-specific, right? Sierra's AGI games had both Red/Green/Blue/Brown CGA and White/Black/Cyan/Fuchsia CGA. While SMI only had W/B/C/F CGA.

You can play the EGA version of SMI in ScummVM and change the video rendering output to Hercules Monochrome in three hues: Green, Amber, or White. Mobygames has screenshots.

Yeah, I can see that, but I also don't find the graphics disorienting when I'm playing at all. Just plain beautiful. I think just looking at the screenshots doesn't do the graphics the justice it deserves.

But I guess that depends how much you like/dislike pixel art. If you want to look at bad pixel art, look at Space Quest IV on the Amiga. :D

I like Secret and Revenge graphics, pixel art is beautifull but I prefer Curse.
