Escape From Monkey Island PS2 (UK) PS3 Compatability?

Hey guys,

Sorry to ask a question about this older game of the series in the TOMI forum, but I was wondering if any UK gamers have tried the PS2 version of Escape From Monkey Island on their backwards compatable 60gb PS3? I just ordered it for a fiver but all I can find online is that it works with some 'minor issues'.

Hoping to review Curse and Escape so that my site will have covered the entire series, and have interviewed Dom Armato about each of course!

Cheers for any replies in advance.

I found Escape incompatible to my interests.

Ouch. Escape yet again takes some overly harsh abuse! Helpful reply though eh! :D ;)

haven't played Escape on a PS3, but tried out plenty of other games that were meant to have "minor issues" and never had any problems, so I'd bet it'll probably be alright :)

failing that, time to dig the ol' PS2 out of storage ;)

Haha thanks for the answer, I think it should be okay but would be good if anyone knew for sure. Already played the PC version years ago but fancied playing it on my PS3 this time! PS2 out of storage is an option but can't be bothered hooking it up in my tiny bedroom really! And the scart on the HD tv never looks that great (PS3 upscales quite well!)

    Hey! :)

I actually played through EFMI last year on my PS3 in preparation for TOMI. I don't recall any errors or glitches while playing through; at least none that weren't already present in every other version of the game.

In other words, it's still very much playable on the UK backwards compatible PS3 :)

Hope that helps and I look forward to reading your reviews :D

Ah brilliant! This is exactally what I wanted to hear so thank you very much Purple Tentacle! I heard it has a few load times here and there but apart from that looks like a great port, will be nice to play it on the telly!

Just wondering now how the aspect ratio will look now on widescreen... I think I'll just mess with the TV setting if it stretches tbh, I'd rather have black bars at the side and retain the original look.

Yeah I played it through on my PS3 too (NTSC though). Worked perfectly. Looks OK stretched too, but it's better in correct aspect ratio.

And TBH, I think the game is good (although not as good as any other MI) up until the 3rd act, and then awful from then onwards.

I like that game... it was fun, had some decent puzzles, it was funny, and the backgrounds were great..

PC version isn't too bad! But would be better when controlled with a gamepad. I just wanted to play PS2 version as I have already completed it on PC upon release and thought it would make a nice change! Gotta love my 60GB PS3.

I think EFMI is overly criticised to be honest... I loved it upon release even if it isn't as good as the other games in the series. Dom Armato even said in my interview with him that although it is his least favourite, it's only because the other games set such a high standard. Of course, earlyish 3D graphics age far worse than 2D in my opinion!

I use a gamepad for my PC version all the time.

It is a shame that nobody has figured out how to make the resolution higher without messing up the cutscenes!

Just arrived and works great on my PS3! Even looks great widescreen so shall be playing it like that. Only glitch so far is some slight audio stutter on the opening cutscene (does this happen for you Purple Tentacle?)... a very minor problem indeed! The rest of the game seems perfect.

I just put it back on to check the intro. There was a slight stutter when Guybrush said 'Melee' I believe, but it was so slight I wouldn't have noticed had I not been listening out for it.

Is it quite bad on your version?

As you say, it's only a minor problem. I honestly can't think of anything else that disrupted gameplay due to poor emulation. Seemed to work well enough, but i'd be interested in anything else you pick up on. :)

Edit: Hmm, after having just watched the same cutscene again, the stuttering you're refering to was much more apparent this time, especially towards the end of Guybrush's monologue. It didn't happen the first time.

Seems pretty hit and miss really. The only other problem with sound is that there's sometimes a slight dip in volume for some sentences when the characters are talking in-game. But this issue existed playing on the PS2 as well.

I think those are the only noticeable things. lol

Ah cheers glad to know it isn't just me! Apart from that it plays great and it doesn't ALWAYS happpen: seems to only occur occassionaly on the cutscenes (replayed the opening again and hardly happened at all, was far worse this morning). Thanks for working with me on this one mate! :D I shall of course let you know if I notice anything else during my playthrough! (The loading disk in the corner is slightly cut off as well although this may just be my TV... even on 4:3 mode theres a bit missing!)

UPDATE: It will be good to get a review of the PS2 version out there as there aren't many online anymore. I am also going to be reviewing the whole season of TOMI and comparing it on PC, Wii and PS3!

No problem, glad to be of help :D

Ah, that's a cool idea to compare the different conversions. I like in-depth stuff like that!

Cool! I look forward to it! :)

What glitches and errors have you got? I never had any problems playing EMI

There weren't many, so it's not surprising you never experienced any problems.

One example I remember is in The Lua Bar, if you pressed the action button to sit on the stool and the waitress happened to be in the way, Guybrush would continue to try to sit on the stool, getting stuck behind her.

From what I remember you couldn't cancel either. I think a few people experienced this problem at the time.

Oh lol, those kind of glitches are bad but at least we're not talking patch material. I see.

I wish they would re relsese it on PSN
