The Cover Art Thread
Do you have any game DVD box art you have seen/are working on that you would like to share? Post it here.
As for myself, I've recently been working on putting together a Curse of Monkey Island DVD box. It's still a work in progress, but I've combined box art from a few different sources (ie. art by Laserschwert, MusicallyInspired and Dravenova) with some alterations to get close to what I'm wanting. I'm still not set on how the spine looks though.

I also did ones for the King's Quest Collection and Space Quest Collection which are viewable on vgboxart.com.
Here's an example of the PS1-PS3 template (they're all the same, just with the PS logo on the top of the spine replaced depending on which system it is):
Here's an example of my Wii template (yes, I know the spine's not quite centred, thank you):
And here's an example of my XBox 360 template (and no, the text doesn't come out that clear ion the full-sized version):
I source the images from either DeviantArt or the Internet and just whack them in a custom-made template. Basic, but it keeps me happy and my shelves nice and tidy.
here it is:
and my source file: http://www.mediafire.com/?aqsgsbsz2nim26g
Also, here is a Secret of Monkey Island:SE DVD cover I put together:
and a larger version: http://www.mediafire.com/?yaetnpz2eankagj
And the Maniac Mansion cover that isn't quite finished yet (back cover needs cleaning up and titles are needed for the spine).
Hate to be a stickler, but I'm pretty sure that art is from The Two Thrones, not Sands of Time. But it's an awesome cover nonetheless.
And for the record, the main reason I make these covers is uniformity! It bugs the hell out of me that, despite games having a template, the spines are all over the place. Sometimes the text is right next to the system logo, sometimes it's centred in the white space below it, sometimes it's in lower case, sometimes it's all in capitols, sometimes it's just a logo itself... Gah!
That was the main thing I looked for when it came to custom covers, and when I couldn't find it, I just thought 'sod it' and made my own, which I'm very happy with.
So if I give one piece of advice to other cover designers, it would be this: Make sure the spines are the same style. It makes your work really stand out on the shelf if all the spines have the same design, plus it satisfies people like me!
MusicallyInspired's covers are brilliant, and as an added bonus they match up well when placed next to each other. And is it just me, or is the 'Monkey Island' text in exactly the same place? 'cause if so, he gets a cookie!
Chyron - your cover is great, even if it does give me deja vu! As for your SoMI:SE cover, it might have been nice if you'd replaced one or two of the screenshots with some from the newer version of the game, but it's still good as is.
EDIT: Ok, I need help! Which of these do you guys think is better:
...or...
Also I'm not fond of the titleless cover arts (must be a thing for simplicity but I believe it's one of those good clichés to have a crispy looking text art of the title card right on the front cover and perhaps explanations about the game on the end).
...Sonic Adventure is released on Wii? O_O
Ok, I'll keep looking. I've printed the first one for the moment (and used up all my blue ink!), and it looks fairly nice, but you're right, it's far from perfect.
EDIT: How about this one?
...or maybe this one?
...or how about this?
The second one, definitely.
I personally like the 1st one the most out of the three.
However, I personally prefer cover art to be as close to the real thing could be as possible.
(put all the logos and stuff on there ect.)
Definitely, except from the fact that the picture used is taken from Sonic the Hedgehog 2006.
Or maybe I'm being too rational on a fan project.
It's very weird to me how none of your covers have titles on the front. I don't think I'd enjoy it on my games, as I wouldn't like to have to look at the spine to know what game it is.
It also seems weird to me to use images that wrap around like that, as I don't think you ever open the box that wide anyways, so you'd never see the full picture.
And you don't have any information on the game, either. I guess your covers are meant just as art, and not to be functional?
It's just personal preference. I've nothing against putting logos on the front, but that's more work for me, so bugger that!
So, one vote for Sonic 3 cover, two for... the middle one. Any advance?
Actually, I would like the last one if more of the whole design would fit on the front cover. as it is, Sonic's head is too big.
[Flips a coin]
Sonic 3 it is! Thanks for your thoughts, guys.
Now, my initial idea was to do what I've done for my video game covers, ie: wallpaper across the whole cover with a custom spine. This resulted in covers like this:
And I was fine with that, until I stopped and thought about it. You guys said you preferred more traditional covers, with a proper image on the front. And to be honest, the covers I'd just made were... well, rubbish. So I had a rethink. I searched the net. And, after a bit of hacking and editing, I came up with this:
Much better, I think you'll agree, even if it isn't perfect. I'm debating with myself whether to put any text on the back, like episode titles and such, but to be honest, I'm very happy with this as is.
(JPGing it has made the spine text look a little wonky, but it's fine in full size. And the three bars on the bottom right are because I just could not get rid of them from the original image!)
This reminds me of my Star Trek TOS Movie VHS set. However, I might make a recommendation that might make it look better; in truth an idea that I got from my Star Trek VHS tapes:
As you can see from the bottom pic, the image from the spine wraps around the entire cover, while the designs on the front and back are sized slightly smaller so that a portion of the image on the spine can be seen throughout on each individual cover.
btw, for anyone wondering what the missing VHS tape in that set is, it's Generations. However the cover for Generations is purple and doesn't match, so I usually store the TOS episode from my "The Captain's Collection" VHS set with these, since it's the only Kirk episode I own and the spine matches better.
The cover is located here: http://www.adventure-treff.de/files/dl/dvdcover_thedig_en.zip
If you would rather it look different than this, I can put together a different one than the one he made.
It looks good but the back needs a little reworking
Which part? It looks almost the exact same as the original box back.
I tried FedexKinko's, but the person there at the time told me that I couldn't (have them print my SoMI:SE DVD box art) because there was copyright info and "even if there wasn't it looks too... professional to not be considered questionable." What a crock.
Then I went to Office Depot, and the people there said that so long as there wasn't glaringly obvious copyright info, they were fine with it. By copyright info, I think they just mean something that has a copyright symbol, the right holder and a date. They printed out my SoMI:SE DVD box art for me and it had LucasFilm Games and LucasArts logos all over it. Since then I've had them print stuff out for me twice without a problem, and both times it cost me like 2 bucks or so.
I need to print out amaray case labels for them. Now, where I'll get a white case from, I'm not sure.
Unfortunately, they've stopped selling the ones that don't have all those plastic cutouts. I'm all for being eco-friendly, but I like my cases to be a little more solid, so those things kind of piss me off.
It's not too difficult to find a 'white DVD case'. I Googled it and came up with a couple of good links (here's two, for example). The ones I found are from UK sites, but if I can find them, I'm sure you can too. Admittedly they're not official Nintendo ones, but really, does it matter?
Try clicking your own link. It's dead. That's why I couldn't link to it directly.
Well. Dunno what to say about that. Linking directly to items in Nintendo's store has never worked for me, across three different computers and multiple browsers. When I click the link, I get a "There was a problem with your request" error. But if it works for the rest of you, awesome.
Because I bought the red wii, now I wonder if I should get red cases to put my games in or if that's just a stupid idea.
Buy a Solid State Black DecalGirl.com skin for your Wii.
(You can probably find it cheaper by Googling it, but that's the first hit that came up when I searched)
