The Cover Art Thread

edited June 2011 in General Chat
Do you have any game DVD box art you have seen/are working on that you would like to share? Post it here.

As for myself, I've recently been working on putting together a Curse of Monkey Island DVD box. It's still a work in progress, but I've combined box art from a few different sources (ie. art by Laserschwert, MusicallyInspired and Dravenova) with some alterations to get close to what I'm wanting. I'm still not set on how the spine looks though.

I love this sort of thing.... I made a few a while back but I have no clue where the files are.

I made one for Day of the Tentacle in the style of the ones found on this website. I also did one for Zak McKracken and Maniac Mansion (not finished yet). I'll have to find them and post them...

I also did ones for the King's Quest Collection and Space Quest Collection which are viewable on vgboxart.com.

I have tons. I'm making new covers for all my PS1-3, Wii and XBox 360 games.

Here's an example of the PS1-PS3 template (they're all the same, just with the PS logo on the top of the spine replaced depending on which system it is):

    PS3PrinceofPersia.jpg

Here's an example of my Wii template (yes, I know the spine's not quite centred, thank you):

    SuperSmashBros.jpg

And here's an example of my XBox 360 template (and no, the text doesn't come out that clear ion the full-sized version):

    AssassinsCreed.jpg

I source the images from either DeviantArt or the Internet and just whack them in a custom-made template. Basic, but it keeps me happy and my shelves nice and tidy.

And the Maniac Mansion cover that isn't quite finished yet (back cover needs cleaning up and titles are needed for the spine).

Hate to be a stickler, but I'm pretty sure that art is from The Two Thrones, not Sands of Time. But it's an awesome cover nonetheless.

Hate to be a stickler, but I'm pretty sure that art is from The Two Thrones, not Sands of Time. But it's an awesome cover nonetheless.
The art's from Forgotten Sands (it's fairly obvious - WW costume and FS villains). You'll see it on pretty much every fan made cover for FS. I just used Sands of Time on the spine because that's the name of the series, in the same way that the Jak & Daxter series is 'The Precursor Legacy', the Sam & Max series is 'Freelance Police' and the Zelda series (when I get round to that particular cover) will be 'The Chronicles of Time'. It just looks good on the spine, is all.

And for the record, the main reason I make these covers is uniformity! It bugs the hell out of me that, despite games having a template, the spines are all over the place. Sometimes the text is right next to the system logo, sometimes it's centred in the white space below it, sometimes it's in lower case, sometimes it's all in capitols, sometimes it's just a logo itself... Gah!

That was the main thing I looked for when it came to custom covers, and when I couldn't find it, I just thought 'sod it' and made my own, which I'm very happy with.

So if I give one piece of advice to other cover designers, it would be this: Make sure the spines are the same style. It makes your work really stand out on the shelf if all the spines have the same design, plus it satisfies people like me!

MusicallyInspired's covers are brilliant, and as an added bonus they match up well when placed next to each other. And is it just me, or is the 'Monkey Island' text in exactly the same place? 'cause if so, he gets a cookie!

Chyron - your cover is great, even if it does give me deja vu! As for your SoMI:SE cover, it might have been nice if you'd replaced one or two of the screenshots with some from the newer version of the game, but it's still good as is.

EDIT: Ok, I need help! Which of these do you guys think is better:

Sonic Adventure didn't have Shadow, but the cover image of the first one doesn't look as swell as the second one. But again, the style of the image on the second one is more fitting for a promotional product for the Sonic X anime series rather than Sonic Adventure.

Also I'm not fond of the titleless cover arts (must be a thing for simplicity but I believe it's one of those good clichés to have a crispy looking text art of the title card right on the front cover and perhaps explanations about the game on the end).

...Sonic Adventure is released on Wii? O_O

Gamecube, but I sold mine when I got my Wii, so...

Ok, I'll keep looking. I've printed the first one for the moment (and used up all my blue ink!), and it looks fairly nice, but you're right, it's far from perfect.

    EDIT: How about this one?

    Sonic, Tails and Knuckles

    ...or maybe this one?
    Sonic in the air

    ...or how about this?
    Sonic... in space?

    The second one, definitely.
  • edited April 2011
Ah, so that's one for airborne Sonic. Do we have any advance? :)
  • edited April 2011
That airborne sonic is from the game that shall not be named.

I personally like the 1st one the most out of the three.

However, I personally prefer cover art to be as close to the real thing could be as possible.
(put all the logos and stuff on there ect.)
  • edited April 2011
    The second one, definitely.

Definitely, except from the fact that the picture used is taken from Sonic the Hedgehog 2006.

Or maybe I'm being too rational on a fan project.

I have tons. I'm making new covers for all my PS1-3, Wii and XBox 360 games.

It's very weird to me how none of your covers have titles on the front. I don't think I'd enjoy it on my games, as I wouldn't like to have to look at the spine to know what game it is.
It also seems weird to me to use images that wrap around like that, as I don't think you ever open the box that wide anyways, so you'd never see the full picture.
And you don't have any information on the game, either. I guess your covers are meant just as art, and not to be functional?

I just realised my DOTT cover wasn't showing because I had the wrong filename. I've fixed it now. I'll post it again here.

It's just an artsy thing I like to do. I keep them on a shelf, so you kinda have to check the spines to find the one you want... and even if you didn't, the part of the picture that's on the front is enough to figure out what's in them.

It's just personal preference. I've nothing against putting logos on the front, but that's more work for me, so bugger that! :p

So, one vote for Sonic 3 cover, two for... the middle one. Any advance?
  • edited April 2011
My favourite of the Sony covers is the first one of the post where you posted three in a row.
  • edited April 2011
I like the seventh one on the fourth post from the last before the 2nd one after before the one that came after.

Actually, I would like the last one if more of the whole design would fit on the front cover. as it is, Sonic's head is too big.
  • edited April 2011
Oh great, it's a tie. Well, I guess I'll just have to flip a coin...

Sonic 3 it is! Thanks for your thoughts, guys.

Ok, bit of a bump (and a double post, but we'll ignore that for now, since it started a new page and it's not that obvious I was the previous poster and I should stop talking now) because I want to show off my Star trek covers.

Now, my initial idea was to do what I've done for my video game covers, ie: wallpaper across the whole cover with a custom spine. This resulted in covers like this:

    StarTrekCover4.jpg

And I was fine with that, until I stopped and thought about it. You guys said you preferred more traditional covers, with a proper image on the front. And to be honest, the covers I'd just made were... well, rubbish. So I had a rethink. I searched the net. And, after a bit of hacking and editing, I came up with this:

    StarTrekCover4-1.jpg

Much better, I think you'll agree, even if it isn't perfect. I'm debating with myself whether to put any text on the back, like episode titles and such, but to be honest, I'm very happy with this as is.

(JPGing it has made the spine text look a little wonky, but it's fine in full size. And the three bars on the bottom right are because I just could not get rid of them from the original image!)
  • edited April 2011
    Good job, Marsden.

This reminds me of my Star Trek TOS Movie VHS set. However, I might make a recommendation that might make it look better; in truth an idea that I got from my Star Trek VHS tapes:

    jsary.jpg gFj8K.jpg
    XvciH.jpg

As you can see from the bottom pic, the image from the spine wraps around the entire cover, while the designs on the front and back are sized slightly smaller so that a portion of the image on the spine can be seen throughout on each individual cover.

btw, for anyone wondering what the missing VHS tape in that set is, it's Generations. However the cover for Generations is purple and doesn't match, so I usually store the TOS episode from my "The Captain's Collection" VHS set with these, since it's the only Kirk episode I own and the spine matches better.

coolguy, I think MI may have already made the one on this site: http://www.adventure-treff.de/specials/dl_goodies.php

The cover is located here: http://www.adventure-treff.de/files/dl/dvdcover_thedig_en.zip

If you would rather it look different than this, I can put together a different one than the one he made.

It looks good but the back needs a little reworking

I did not make the ones on Adventure Treff. I merely made ones in that style that that site didn't do.

Which part? It looks almost the exact same as the original box back.

I've always been a fan of custom cover art and I'm not terrible at making some, but I don't have the money to buy the print paper. It's a shame, because I am really picky about cover art.
  • edited April 2011
That's why I take whatever cover art I make to Office Depot. They have a nice printer and various types of paper (including disc labels), and if they mess up when printing a copy of your art, they don't charge you for the wasted pages.

I tried FedexKinko's, but the person there at the time told me that I couldn't (have them print my SoMI:SE DVD box art) because there was copyright info and "even if there wasn't it looks too... professional to not be considered questionable." What a crock.

Then I went to Office Depot, and the people there said that so long as there wasn't glaringly obvious copyright info, they were fine with it. By copyright info, I think they just mean something that has a copyright symbol, the right holder and a date. They printed out my SoMI:SE DVD box art for me and it had LucasFilm Games and LucasArts logos all over it. Since then I've had them print stuff out for me twice without a problem, and both times it cost me like 2 bucks or so.

When I bought my Wii, it came with Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, both in small cardboard sleeves.

I need to print out amaray case labels for them. Now, where I'll get a white case from, I'm not sure.
  • edited June 2011
Here. Sorry, but Nintendo's online store is kind of crappy, so I can't give you a direct link. Just look under Parts & Accessories > Wii > Parts & Accessories, and they're listed as "Wii Game Disc Case(s)".

Unfortunately, they've stopped selling the ones that don't have all those plastic cutouts. I'm all for being eco-friendly, but I like my cases to be a little more solid, so those things kind of piss me off.
  • edited June 2011
    Here's a more direct link.

It's not too difficult to find a 'white DVD case'. I Googled it and came up with a couple of good links (here's two, for example). The ones I found are from UK sites, but if I can find them, I'm sure you can too. Admittedly they're not official Nintendo ones, but really, does it matter?
  • edited June 2011

Try clicking your own link. It's dead. That's why I couldn't link to it directly.

I did click it. Works fine for me.

    Works for me too.
  • edited June 2011
    ...

Well. Dunno what to say about that. Linking directly to items in Nintendo's store has never worked for me, across three different computers and multiple browsers. When I click the link, I get a "There was a problem with your request" error. But if it works for the rest of you, awesome.
  • edited June 2011
The link works for me too, and the "recycle" sign cutout looks weird as hell.

Because I bought the red wii, now I wonder if I should get red cases to put my games in or if that's just a stupid idea.

I wanted a black Wii but I couldn't wait long enough. Now they're out and I already have a Wii. Eh....don't wanna bother spending the money now. It would have looked nice with all black consoles lined up together next to my TV, though.

Don't want a sticker? Then you'll want something like this. It's what I have on my Wii, and it looks great.

(You can probably find it cheaper by Googling it, but that's the first hit that came up when I searched)
