Birds and rats will probably eat the corpses and they are not infected.. not that we saw one anyway.

Wouldn't the sewers be filled with an army of infected rats?

    The disease (or whatever it is) just affects humans. We haven't seen any zombie animals nor in the comic or the show.

    So, there you have it: the lack of "Walking Dead" animal zombies is all illustrator's Charlie Adlard's fault.

    This is the best i can i do at this time, but i don't think Kirkman ever really goes into detail about it.
