The Animal (You know what)

edited December 2013 in The Walking Dead

OK, now let's get one thing straight. The whole episode made me cry more than I did from Episode 1 to Episode 4 of Season 1 (not Episode 5, I literally cried for an hour then...). The biggest part of that was.. The Dog. Now, if a dog dies in anything. A movie, book, GAME, I will cry. I'm just very attached to dogs I guess. I had to pause the game for twenty minutes and come back to it when I realized what had happened and what I had the option to do. Of course, when the dog attacks you and falls on the spikes, I HAD to kill it. I played catch with it 3 times for crying out loud! Basically, this thread is about, does anyone feel the same way? How they were shocked at least at the dog moment?

  • Dog part got me too and I did cry tears.

  • damn dog i even offered it food and it does that. killed that shit.(more to the point i killed it because it was suffering but ya that damn dog was going to die either way after that.)

  • I was afraid that I was going to have to kill it and eat it at first, but as someone who told Clem to kill Lee, it was a little easier for me to mercy kill the dog.

  • The dog part really got me, I hated that crying :(

  • The biggest thing about the dog was the OH SHIT moment when I grabbed the can of beans and he dove at me. HOLY HELL, I nearly lost my shit.

It was definitely sad, but understandable - they say that a pet dog is just three meals away from being a feral beast, and it'd likely been a lot more than three meals from the look of the poor thing. But if it's me or a dog, well...

  • I thought it was a weird scene. Until that point he had been REAALLYYY passive. Now, biting Clem to get the food himself? Yeah, okay, that works as a nice twist. But why does he suddenly forget the food completely and just focus on trying to eat Clem? I think that scene would have worked better if you had to pick between fighting Sam for the food, or backing off and fleeing (with the bite still there).

  • I posted a topic about it.
I feel the same way as you when it comes to animals. I was hoping when i first saw the dog that it would be a friend for Clem then all of a sudden he went into a rage because of the food but the sight of seeing the dog impaled and in pain was just awful. I think the worst part of this is that there is an actually option where you can leave it to die in pain. now the people who would do that would be have no soul whatsoever, you'd have to put it out of it's misery and feel no pain.
Hardest part of the whole series so far to watch.

  • It probably would have, but I feel that TellTale wanted to get a knife and just stab me in the heart... Oh the feels...

  • Because once you take the food away, you're a threat. Plus, you taste an awful lot like food after the first bite. Made sense to me, at least.

  • That part was so terrible. It was upsetting. I had my dog next to me the whole time too, so it made me even sadder. I put it down too. Poor little guy, he was just starving. He was a family dog, so I'm sure he wasn't aggressive before the zombie apocalypse. That was a very shocking and sad scene.

  • True. A starved dog, who probably was not very aggressive prior to the ZA, would be more focused on the food than the human. He was food aggressive because he was starved. There was no need for him to keep gunning for Clem. That scene scared the crap out of me, but made me really sad at the same time. It was definitely a twist I didn't see coming.

  • I put it out of it's misery, but didn't watch. Didn't want to have to see that... it must be worse for Clem too.

  • I didn't really understand tho ... The dog was all nice and playful and as soon as you gave it a little bit of food it went crazy !

  • I killed it too, but NOT because it attacked me! I simply wanted to put it out of its misery.
I shared the food and all. It just wasn't very clever to take away food from a starving dog....
Also, dat sewing action later on... Iegitimately did not like what I saw!

The dog had the same name as me... That was a little bit traumatizing.

But even though it attacked Clementine, I still mercy killed it.

I've seen dogs in real life change in a split second. Generally, most animals can be like that. It was starving, and like what @SketchyGalore said; once you take the food away, you're a threat.

  • I killed it, I was so sad to see it suffering like that even after what it did. I felt more sad about the fact that Clem couldn't trust anyone, be it man or mans best friend :(

  • I f***ing hate when animal dies in the movies or games. I almost cried when bear mutant killed my pet in Fallout 3. Now this...

  • On a lighter note, I was delighted by the dog's name. I just hope that Clementine killing a dog named Sam isn't supposed to be a hint in regards to the future of another Telltale game series...

  • You mean Sam and Max? Nah, everybody cried when Max died, I doubt they are going to kill Sam.

  • I meant more I hope it's not a symbolic way of Telltale saying they've killed the Sam and Max games.

  • Oh... If that happens, I will be really sad.

I must be a sociopath like Dexter... Or something is wrong with me... I don't know... But I felt absolutely nothing for some stray..

Sure I tried to pet it and feed it. I even mercy killed it.. .... But when it attacked me I killed it without hesitating. Really don't see what the big deal is... I mean we kill animals all the time for food..

    Sure its different...

    But it really isn't.

In fact I thought Clem was insane for walking away from the dog without eating it first.

  • The dog probably hadn't eaten in weeks, maybe months. Once the food was there it's instincts took over. It did a very good job of reminding me that it was an animal.

  • I have nothing against that scene, except it first reminded me of the Episode 5 scene in S1.
Really? We had to do everything ourselves?

I have never actually watched all of the "dog suffering" or killing the dog animations in their entirety. I pretty much start to watch them, go "oh god" and close them.

Kudos to the guy who animated them, did an amazing job and apparently still likes dogs.

    Whoa...triple post.

    Still triple post.

  • The dog turning on Clem caught me completely off guard. I was sitting nice and relaxed in my chair, calmly watching things unfold and then BAM!... Nicely done by TellTale.

  • I killed the dog, not because it attacked me, but because it was suffering. Damn mutt didn't have evil intentions, it just went feral and relied on its natural instincts.

It was my own fault for assuming I could be friends with the dog in a zombie apocalypse without considering that it would turn on me because it starved on its own for who knows how long. The words 'man's best friend' doesn't exist in the Walking Dead universe, and Clementine paid the price because of my stupidity.

  • I got a bit teary eyed, I have dogs myself and I'm pretty sensitive when it comes to animals being hurt or killed. The dog being stuck and crying out in pain just killed me.

I had to think for a few minutes what I wanted to do, but mercy killing > leaving it in pain until it dies in the end.

  • My biggest fear when I met the dog was that it would tag along for a while, then get killed. That would break my heart to bits. It was nice to just get it over with at the start if that makes sense.

  • I left it to die

  • i really thought the dog would stayed with you till the end ... It would have been pretty nice !

  • You're going to like the next episode then, apparently we get to saw off a leg...

  • I actually got a game over in that scene because I was completely caught off guard by it. The first time I kept beating its head with the can of food, not realizing the knife was also there. When it was ready to pounce, I didn't react fast enough, and... shutters That was more brutal than the deaths in the recent Tomb Raider...

The second time, I used the knife after realizing it was in the environment and that "stabbing in the snout" animation broke me. I was like, "Yeah, this is a bad situation and I'm trying to survive here, but I just stabbed a dog!"

    And then the ultimate choice...

Had to mercy kill it, but afterwards, I hugged my own dog for a good five minutes before I could continue.

I thought I would have to eat it to survive. Then it went and attacked me! I was being so nice to it too. Oh well I mercy killed it. If I was in Clems position I would be chowing down on it if I could find something edible on it. I love dogs, but only the ones I'm closed to. Dog has to earn that trust like anything else. Even then it's still an animal.

    Edit
Compared to having the kill Lee, a stray dog is nothing. Now if it had been one from season 1 that went feral? That would be sad.

I wasn't going to risk losing a few fingers to risk it. Impaled as it was, chances are it was going to bleed out in a few minutes anyway.

    Serves the thing right.

  • I put the mutt out of its misery. I even offered that little bastard some food, then he tries to eat ME?! I even thought that the dog would become a new friend for Clem. After the initial freak-out of being attacked, when I saw it run through on those sticks, I just thought "Yeah, well, fuck you too buddy. We could've had a nice thing going." Again, though, I don't think of myself as an inherently cruel person, so I killed it to stop the pain. Just that though, I wasn't sad or anything.

Of course, I may have had it coming since I was making jokes about eating it the whole time we were in the camp. Still, though, I was giving up some of my FOOD. Man's best friend, yeah right...

  • I was loving the dog part and SO SO SO surprised when it attacked. It was probably the most intense part of the episode for me, being a serious dog lover. I killed it, to put it out of it's misery. I was angry at first, but when the camera panned away to show how skinny the dog was in the midsection (seriously emaciated, clearly near death) it reminded me how harsh the world was.

  • If a dog bit me trying to rip my arm off... I wouldn't shed a tear after I killed it. Just self defense. The only thing that was sad was clementine alone again. I kind of was hoping she would have a friend in the dog.
