  • Okay, yeah, I wanted to hear you out first, but in truth I've thought this before myself and find it to be the most plausible of any romantic situation between them. There's honestly some kind of tensions--I can't say for sure whether or not it's meant to be homoerotic but it's there. But assuming it is, I think it's very possible for Nick to have unrequited feelings for Luke. Judging by his dialogue when you talk to them about their friendship, Nick seems to both revere and envy Luke. He has a lot of conflicted feelings about him that I don't really see any of that on Luke's side--honestly I kind of feel like Luke views Nick as a burden and you can sort of tell that Nick can sense it, which makes the theory a lot sadder.

Also it's sort of a common trope for the angry, guarded guy with low self-esteem and daddy issues to end up being a closeted homosexual.

I really believe there's mutual concern between them but there's something very lopsided about their relationship. As you pointed out, the reverence and envy Nick feels towards Luke. But I also get the impression that Luke views Nick as more a troubled teen than an adult. He referred to Nick as "kid" when asking Clem to look after him and I was thinking, "hey guy, isn't he like the same age as you?" So that's another problem right there.

I'm not sure I'd say Luke views Nick as a burden but more like he's just overwhelmed by the responsibility. He's presented as not being that great dealing with complicated situations and Nick is a pretty complicated mess. It seems like mismanagement on his part, IMO. Not realizing his lack of trust or kiddy glove treatment is doing more harm than good.

  • Yeah, I was talking to my friend about that. The way he treats him definitely comes off kind of patronizing, like he just doesn't view him as his equal.

I got the sense that Nick may have had some emotional issues even before the apocalypse, and Luke is just one of those people who doesn't deal well with that. Like he was a good friend to have fun and hang out with, and if Nick was a bad mood he'd take it in stride, but he didn't want to hear about any of that, you know? But it wasn't so overwhelming to him because he probably didn't have to deal with it personally that much.

Now that Nick's family is gone he's aware of the fact that he's the only person close to Nick and he's dreading the idea of having to deal with that. He probably finds Nick's emotional state more justifiable considering how much he's lost, but sometimes when you've known someone that long it's difficult to get past your previous biases to comfort them over something you might comfort someone else with.

  • You don't have to be in a relationship to reproduce. There are tons of gay people who've been pressured by society to go into straight marriages and had children despite not being attracted to their partner.

In a post-apocalyptic scenario it's plausible to just have sex for the sake of reproduction and then continue whatever same sex relationship you're pursing. You don't need one man and one woman to properly raise a child. That's a very old-fashioned way of thinking.
