I got what I wanted. At least over a hour and a fantastic story. It was better then EP.2 but not as shocking as EP.3. So it was just as great as "Faith" in my opinion.
As long as the episode felt long I'm happy with the length. My biggest problem with "Smoke and Mirrors" was the episode felt incredibly short and the lack of unique choices.
That's a pretty stereotypical thing to say, especially since IGN normally give Telltale episodes glowing reviews. They probably just didn't like the episode as much as us. Actually scratch that, it's most certainly the reason.
I didn't really have any issues with Episode 4. I enjoyed it and thought it left off at a good place to end the season next episode. I can't wait to see what happens next. I don't think they should be limited by a preconceived idea the community has on time constraints. I felt like that episode covered everything it needed to. I feel quite differently about Episode 3 of TWD, so don't attack me as a fan boy. What I mean is, if the episode is good and doesn't leave to many stones unturned it shouldn't matter if its 75 minutes or 2.5 hours. After completing the episode I didn't have any real thoughts about what could have been done better like I did with Ep. 3 of TWD, which I felt could have done well with at least another hour tacked on.
While I love the series and am always very impressed with the stories Telltale releases for us, I have to admit, this episode was completely unsatisfying for me. First of all, it felt incredibly short compared to the others. I mean, really, they could've just added this episode to the end of/beginning of another episode and it would've flowed perfectly. But also, I don't really feel like I got anything done. Just when things start to finally get interesting, he lights a cigarette and that's it?
Again, I love the series, but if I'm the only person who had issues with this latest episode, I will eat my proverbial hat.
There are those that look to enjoy the game and get the most out of it like us and KCohere and those that want to get to the end, and check the time in which they do it and post it. When I'm gonna play tomorrow I'm gonna make sure to check when I start and when I end, to prove a point for one and to see how foolish some people were also.
Damn right! My favorite fight in both Wolf and TWD In terms of choreography. The bloody Mary fight was the most satisfying fight in a telltale game though.
Yeah, Im for sure reserving judgement until I play it. It seems like the complaining gets worse and worse after every episode but I havent been disappointed so far and I dont expect to be.
I have to say, with all the negative response I saw here, I prepared myself for the worst. Now I am after completing the episode - and I don… more't understand all the hate.
It took me about 1h 20min to complete the episode, but that was not surprising because of two things - 1) that's how long these episodes are now (and so were eps 2-3); 2) the trailer showed the scenes from maybe 3-4 locations tops, so I knew there was no chance it would suddenly be around 2 hours.
The other thing is that these 1h20min certainly did not feel short for me - the episode expanded on the universe, introducing many new characters and places and did it (at least that's how I think) in a proper way. In comparison, I feel that episode 2 (even though the same in length) was a lot shorter, because there was almost no progression and the scenes felt overlong (and that is why I still claim that ep 2 is the worst of the season).
You guys complain when the episode isn't released fast, and you also complain when the episode gets a fast release... Give Telltale a break and stop complaining
Lack of choices and lack of consequences to those choices. I mean it ends on a cliffhanger for god sakes. It seems like every episode before this one in both the wolf among us and walking dead end on an epic choice the player has to make. This one doesn't. Also it was just an hour long. If you're going to remove choices I.e differentiation in the story then at least make a longer story. The previous episodes were both longer and had more choices.
Completely let down as well. I don't care as much for the "action" but I wanted MORE character interaction and MORE dialog. When the episode ended, I was like, "WHAT?!?! THAT'S IT?!?"
Telltale don't care anymore they want to finish up the wolf among us and walking dead and focus on their next projects, looks like the day w… morehen episodes were 2.5-3 hrs long are over and we should exoect 1 hour episodes. This episode was the worst episode of the season, I feel very disappointed and let down by them.
I liked it for the setup that it is for the finale, I can't really say much more than that. Oh, and that cliffhanger was... eh. I did not want everything answered right away, but at least some interaction with the Crooked Man was called for, I think.
It puts the whole thing in perspective, but it falls stagnant because of it at times, I believe. I enjoyed to see Snow taking charge of things, Bigby and Woody's scene and what little answers and development we did get. I personally think that it is lacking, but it was enjoyable enough.
Definitely not their best, but neither their worst; that place is still held in my mind by Smoke and Mirrors, for this season.
I don't understand why everyone is so upset. They are the same time frame since episode 1. Yes, ok they may come off a tad bit short but I'd take that considering the quality and I'm GUARANTEED to have fun and enjoy the game. I've played some in the past where it took days, weeks even months to complete and I did not enjoy myself. You are so focused on the game and suspense, time just flies! I liked it a lot! Can't wait for the 5th episode already!!
To me this episode was "meh." I definitely liked it but it's not on the same level as episode 1 and 3. It definitely blows episode 2 out of the water and I wasn't surprised that this is the case. Episode 4 of the Walking Dead was definitely my least favorite episode due to how generic it felt and because I hated Molly. I definitely liked this Penultimate episode more than that series.
It was my favorite Episode other than Faith I think. I thought it was great, although I do think it ended a bit short. I would've liked it more if the Crooked Man conversation at the end went on a bit longer than nothing. Nonetheless, I thought it was great.
I agree with the OP. This is a very disappointing episode. There is no rising action, no climax, hence no emotional payoff. This is why it feels so much like a filler; like there should be more. It's like the writers aren't even interested in telling us a story any more, and are just going through the motions to finish this series.
An episode should itself have the elements that make a story - exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution, while also being part of a series, otherwise, it leaves the readers (in this case, the players) with a sense that the story is lacking. A case in point, when Bigby enters the door to the Crooked Man's home, there is no rising action, no heightening of the tension, but instead, we meet a cripple who gives us an exposition about why he worships the Crooked Man and wants us to wait for him as we approach the door to finally meet the man himself, slowing down the pace. And when we meet him, the episode ends. For most of the players who find the episode disappointing, I'd imagine they, like me, were thinking "that's it?".
Episode 3's pace was brilliant - as you escort Crane out, you sense that something is not right, followed by the climax of the episode - the fight against the 3 nemeses - and then the resolution as Snow comes to your rescue, while leaving enough of a cliffhanger as Crane is taken away.
Episode 4 feels wanting, disappointing and poorly crafted as a story.
The episode feels like a filler because the dramatic elements that make a story compelling are missing. This episode has no rising action, no climax, no falling action, no resolution, and hence no emotional payoff.
Same way I'm seeing it. Some people went against the tone of others, so those that went against the tone probably listened to what you said in the 'Episode 4 also 1 hour and 20 minutes long?' thread and the others didn't. Both of you can count on me to do it the way you mentioned KCohere.
Yeah, Im for sure reserving judgement until I play it. It seems like the complaining gets worse and worse after every episode but I havent been disappointed so far and I dont expect to be.

I'm saying this so no one else can "bUt TwD S1 WuZ oVeR 2 HoUrs aNd ThAt Wuz 5 bUcKZ" - Angry consumer.
I thought what was in the episode was good, but it was short, railroaded and the ending was anticlimactic.

Finally! Someone who thought the episode was more than okay
Thank you, someone else loves the episode too. We're rather short of people on that side...
I fucking loved the episode. Great buildup to the finale.

Thread: Say what you want about episode 4...
But can we all agree that this part was fucking great?
...we've come a long way, man...

I thought it was pretty good too. It didn't beat Episode 3 as my favorite but I still had an enjoyable experience.
Your not alone. There is a thread talking about how "garbage" this episode is. I don't agree but there you go.
Epic bro scene initiated.
Who else chose "see ya around," When getting in the cab? It just felt like a badass goodbye to the Woodsman.
Finally somebody that just lit a cigar too, highfive!
Yeah. We may have had some... Complications in the past. He strayed from the flock yeah, but he's earned his way back in.
I asked him what his plans are now. Was all
"We've all got our roles to play, wolf. I'll see you around."
To think some folks were thinking he was the killer once. Now here we are.
Shit....
Thats even better!
"Folks might be sore over what happened, but we have to find it in our hearts to forgive Woody."
That fight with Jersey was just down right amazing... Best fight in the game for me. Felt like an actual boss fight with the music and all.

i love it how Bigby has pretty much made up with both the people he beat the snot out of in ep. 1 as we find bigger fish to fry
Yeah, though in Gren's case it was kind of one sided. :S
from what I read of reviews people thought it was good just a little short. Which I don't get as long as the game is good, length shouldn't matter.

you really think they rushing their most beloved games to start on Game of Thrones??????????????????????

Definitely not the best episode but I didn't think it was bad I'd give it a 7.5 maybe an 8.
Even though this episode was short in play time it didn't feel short for me, i liked this episode more than episode 2 but preferred episodes 1&3.
