In Nick Breckon We Trust

He's the Best Game Director of Season 2. In my opinion he's directed the best two episodes of the season so far. All that remains, and a House Divided.
I'm pretty sure, he had the whole season planned out and don't get me wrong when I say this, but if he directed episode 4 it would have been a lot better. Why? Eddie would've been included, Nicks and Sarah's death would have been a bit more redeeming and I'm fairly sure the storyline would've been a lot better and there would've been a lot more character development which I think has been lacking the last two episodes. And I'm gonna admit I don't feel as attached to season two's characters as much as I did with season 1.

My point is even though season 2 has had its bad moments, I trust Nick Breckon to make "No Going Back" an episode to remember.

What's your opinion, do you think he's one of the better writers? Do you think Season 2 would have been better if he had a bit more control.
And this thread perfectly sums up my opinion on Nick Breckon.

  • Why didn't he write episode 3 and 4?

  • I guess to give other writers a chance. [Sighs] :(

  • A man can only write so much. He did additional writing for those episodes, though.

I'd guess that all the scripts were written at the same time so he was writing 1 & 2 while 3 & 4 were being written, then he went through and ironed out any minor inconsistencies.

  • This is why There should be only one writer for each Season. But, Season 1 had different writers too.

  • Funny that everyone seemed to hate him before.

  • Season 1 had better more experienced writers. I'd say season 2 is more of a chance to let the new writers step up. But I believe they should've just stuck with the orginals.

  • That's true, I remember he said that each episode is written all at the same time. So when they a kill a character, they have to tell the people writing the other episodes "We just killed that guy off, make sure that guy isn't in the episode."

  • People compared Breckon to Vanaman, now people are comparing Shorette/Petty/Stirpe to Breckon.

It's weird how the world works.

I'm pretty sure Carver said at some point, "Fuckin' ingrates, you didn't even know how good you got it."

  • The only writer who worked on Season 1 and is still working on Season 2 (and for Telltale in general) is Mark Darin.

  • What did happen to Sean? Does he still work at telltale?

  • No. Both he and Jake Rodkin left Telltale in September 2013 to pursue their own projects.

  • I think Episode 5 can be good, but in my opinion I just don't think it's possible for it to redeem season 2: Amid the Ruins already smashed and buried a good part of the story and its characters (Nick, Sarah, Rebecca and Sarita are all already DEAD, Luke has become somewhat of an asshole, Kenny is now even more of a selfish prick and Jane just up and left - she could come back, but that doesn't change the fact that many of the characters were thrown into the garbage by AtR).

Breckon writing No going Back will probably make it a good episode, but even if it's 4-5 hours long, the story as a whole will never be as good as if he had written the ENTIRE season.

  • IIRC Sean left.

  • I'll agree in saying that the new writers probably messed up majority of his storyline.

  • We should tweet him that!

  • he approved of the deaths, Fuck. That.

  • Wait until you get the next episode, before you worship him. I have a feeling a lot of people will rage.

That's actually very bad idea in writing stories. Because the other writers wouldn't know till the last minute and would have to scrap away good content cuz of another's fuck up. There obviously seems to be no consistent flow between the writers. They should just have one writer for each game. ESPECIALLY this season. Nick knew what he was doing. But the others just fucked his work over. You either write every episode together as a true team and not separately, or you just do the whole thing by yourself.

  • How do you guys somehow know Ediie was supposed to be in episode 4? If he was supposed to be in it why would they spoil re apperence in an episode slide? He was most likely a placeholder.

  • So many people died... Of the waiting

  • A house divided was my favorite episode of the season.

  • I'm sure Nick Breckon is a replacement for Sean Vanaman, they're both amazing writers. But remember back did people rage about determinant deaths when he wrote the story? I'm sure Nick is the New Sean.

  • Damn it Ling, I have to read all of your comments in Mr. House's voice, it annoys me.

    1. When Ben's death was determinant there wasn't just a few bits of extra dialogue, we got a whole epic scene where Ben stood up to Kenny.
    2. Nick gives us character development (just like Sean) which actually makes us care about canon deaths. RIP Maybelle. :D
  • It is the way it should be. The light of civilization brought to the darkness of post-apocalyptic world. The order of technology brought to the chaos of the Wasteland.

  • They wouldn't give him a new hood if he was just a placeholder, that'd have to be a new and updated model.

  • One of the things I liked about the determinant characters back in Season 1. Every one of them have a very strong scene before their deaths.

  • I wish Season 2 could get a rewrite by, you know, a competent team of writers.

  • Breckon is arguably the best writer so far in Season 2, but keep in mind that he IS the lead writer, which means that all major stuff plots/deaths that have happened in episodes 3 and 4 have been under his approval.

I'm crossing my fingers that episode 5 will be an improvement but I wouldn't bet money on it.

  • and you think why??? or know how???

  • I think that there is a differences between thinking about an idea and executing it. Nick might have written the deaths as quite emotional and heartbreaking, but it is the other writer's job to execute it.

Like Sarah's death might have sound very emotional on paper but the execution might have been less so, due to the other writer's not have done what was fully intended.

    I could be wrong though...
