Animation quality

So I'm sure some of you guys throughout your time playing The Walking Dead series by TellTale Games have become more aware of the quality of each episode as time goes on, you're gonna notice everything from animations to possibly even smaller things like textures for the backgrounds. Well, I for one have noticed a severe lack in quality of the animations as time has gone on, this not only applies to TWD, but also TWAU. It feels rushed sometimes, things ranging from odd gestures to really unnatural looking walk cycles. True with every game you may get an animation flaw or two, maybe even a few that really just give themselves up as looking goofy and funny, but with TTG it's starting to get pretty frequent. I'm not necessarily saying every animation needs to look fluent and natural, but sometimes it really just makes me rub my face and say; "Really?" Now don't get me wrong TWD is an amazing game series, consisting of some amazing content and hard work put into each episode that would be incredibly hard to find with your standard game. But as episode four reached it's release, the animations look pretty.. Bad. It looked rushed, and just sloppy on some occasions, now I'm not one to sit here and point out every single little animation flaw and make a rant about it. But sometimes these things just distract you, and make you lose that feeling for the situation within the game, because it's just so painfully noticeable. What do you guys think should be done, and with this, what do you guys think about the animations within the game?

  • I didn't notice any bad animation.

  • It's not really anything /bad/, just more of unnatural. Like with Clementine being grabbed at by Rebecca in the beginning of Episode four, the two froze for maybe a second and just had the two standing still with literally nothing happening, not even the same occasional idle of inhaling and exhaling.

  • Yeah, me too. Season one had some weird facial animations (partly).

  • I think the only problem I ever had in a telltale game that has to do with animation is this

  • Right, that's one that really bothered me.

  • I haven't really noticed much of a difference between the episodes. I remember All That Remains having some annoying issues for me (Pete just isn't looking at you when he's talking) but I don't think they've gotten worse from there.

  • Yeah, that's definitely understandable. It's not really much of it just being extremely noticeable, but sometimes if you just happen to look toward it, you'll see it. Like Aldimon mentioned, sometimes the facial expressions look a bit weird, not really reflecting the way the character's tone is.

Only time that stands out to me was Sarah's deck death. She was screaming, but her mouth was hardly moving!
    Probably my computer though!

Edit: Whoopsie spoiler. Sorry newbie here.

  • One thing I thought was a little weird in Season 1 were that the black outlines on the characters clothes textures would float a little and either stay that way for the entire episode or stay for a few minutes and go away, it was little distracting.

  • Yep, but I think that was to make it look more like a comic.
What I think was weird was Clem's face during the scene where she pushes the table during episode one. It looked as if her eyes would pop out of her head any moment.

  • I've noticed on the PS3 version when Larry falls down from the heart attack in episode two and Lilly gets on the floor to see if he's breathing she seems to have an average face though on the PC version she looks sad. It never really bothered me though.

  • I noticed in episode 5 of season 1 if you take ben with you, you can see his feet go under the floor on the way to the elevator.
And in episode 1 of this season when clem gets locked in the shed nicks gun is floating.
So yeah, the animation isn't always perfect, but it doesn't get in the way of the gameplay, so it's ok.

  • Must have been pretty heavy.
