The more you think about this line, the more you realized that's exactly what both Kenny and Jane is doing in No Going Back.
Kenny is willing to do what's best for Clementine and AJ by excluding himself from Wellington, despite hurting himself and Clementine.
Jane is willing to trick Clementine and provoking Kenny, in order to protect her and doing what she consider best for her. Despite knowing that it would hurt her.

He was just talking about human nature, and mostly about when he killed his wife's lover in a way, it's the kind of flashback that is made so it can be used for future events without even making mention or being directed to them.
