Still waiting for TWD to go in depth on this, WTH happened to all of the united states military?
You can say it was human error etc, etc but there's no way the military got wiped out like that. There's just way to much order in the U.S. military to have a break down to the point where they dont even have a presence. Unless what ever caused the outbreak was put into their rations. Do you think kirkman will ever touch up on this?

Since realistically speaking the army of Monaco could crush a zombie outbreak in a few weeks even if anyone that dies turns, it is safe to assume the US army conviniently disapeared as soon as the zombies showed up, except for a few National Guard units making some token attempts to "contain" the undead as shown in Atlanta in the comics/show and Macon in the game.
